where every song is under five minutes?

Each song has to be it's own entity, not like the Snowgoose where all the tracks (except two i think, but give me a break here i am just giving an example) are all part of one concept all working together?

and what is a true prog album ?  for now let's just consider it an album where most people wouldn't argue about it

I picked five minutes because that would make for a long pop song i guess

curious about this i guess, right now i am listening to Soft Machines Volume II for the first time, every track is under 5 minutes, but my opinion isnt valid because, give me a break it's my first listen

Jethro Tull's Warchild is also very close. It has the similar attributes of Aqualung and many people argue that Aqualung isn't true prog.

Oh nets, I was going to mention GG octopus. I did'nt remember the last one was a beat longer, but what a great album indeed ! I think JT songs from the woods is also close but again one or two songs are a beat longer.

Anyway, what an odd way to judge an album.

omri,

i am not judging the album on song length, but often prog rock is defined as having longer songs, so i was just wondering if a full-blown prog album can be pulled off with all songs shorter than 5 minutes

ELP - Tarkus

The six tracks that make up the suite are seperately listed on the album cover and easily identifiable.(They are not parts 1 -6)

Muse - Absolution

This is a prog album IMO.Without checking I'm sure all the songs are under 5 minutes in length.

But all the CD releases have them as one track and you're more than happy to talk about it as one song on any "best epic" threads going aren't you?

Also, this talk of it being a "suite"... classical suites are still split by clearly defined pauses and changes in tempo, etc. A prog epic with a few subheadings/different melodies will often be referred to as a "suite" when it wouldn't really be right to call it so...

I think this is a case of ELP fans having their cake and well and truly eating it.

Trouserpress is Right!!!! It is one freaking song!  And even if it is not (which it is!) it still doesnt answer the thread question cause it falls into to that long concept category split into seperate flowing tracks.

SM were forced to give long tunes each a number of titles per segment  by the record company ABC Records. Yes would have fun if Atlantic had put similar pressure on to title every segment of Topographic Oceans

Kansas, Point Of Know Return. At least it´s close.

Track listing
1. Point of know return (3:11)
2. Paradox (3:49)
3. The spider (2:08)
4. Portrait (He knew) (4:32)
5. Closet chronicles (6:30)
6. Lightning hand (4:21)
7. Dust in the wind (3:26)
8. Sparks of the tempest (4:15)
9. Nobody's home (4:37)
10. Hopelessly human (7:10)

Total Time: 43:59

Ok, Point Of Know Return is not as progressive as Tarkus or Octopus, since the songs are a bit commercialized and radio edited, but I still think of it as a progressive rock classic.

Take care now.

I must add my voice on the tarkus question. I think it is one of the best epics ever and I do'nt agree you can cut it to pieces. When does mass change to manticore ? (after the singing it turns to manticore than another singing).

I would also claim that the las 4 parts of "In the thresshold of a dream" is realy one epic suite I call "the dream".

Point of know return I remembered that both "Closet chronicles & "Hoplessly human" were much more than 5 minutes so I did not mention it even though I love this album.

Aaron, do'nt be angry please. I think it's a nice game to play and some found a true solutions (not me unfortunately) but it is just a game. If I'll ask you what music you like you will never consider it's length as a criterion.
