I've seen several posts on here recently about the "HOT 100" feature, so I'd
like to put in my 2 cents.......First off, I love the Top 100 Albums feature, it's a
great way for new fans to discover how important the old dinosaurs are (i.e.,
YES, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD, etc), and it's also a way for "middling" fans
(like myself!) to discover great bands like CAMEL, GENTLE GIANT, and
CARAVAN. The way it currently runs is cool, also, because it automatically
updates itself as new reviews come in, so that the albums at the bottom of the
list change a lot. Like for instance, "One of a Kind" by BRUFORD has popped
in and out of the glorious #100 position 3 times in the last couple months, as
it got bumped out by newer albums like "The Whirlwind" and "Anno Domini"
that get lots of new reviews.

It does annoy me a little that almost half of the Top 20 are all albums by YES,
GENESIS, and PINK FLOYD, albums that most of us already have and
already know they are classics. How about doing a Hot 100 poll in which
all albums by  YES, GENESIS, ELP, PINK FLOYD, and JETHRO TULL are
BANNED ! ?    (actually I've made just such a list myself, I call it the "B List"
and if you'd like to check it out you can just pop over to "Progzilla.com"......
and while you're there you can download some awesome free Podcasts by
        prog expert Cliff Pearson )

You do get the TOP 100 Little Known But Highly Rated Studio Albums of All Time feature (no Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis or King Crimson)

Do you watch the individual genre top 20 lists? there is a lot of good stuff on those, not to mention the overlooked and obscure gems feature.

You could just people to recommend bands in the recommendations section, that is a great way to find obscure/lesser known artists as well.

At what point does a band/album become a "classic" and therefore get "banned" from the Top 100?

how about I be the first person to say that this idea is plain stupid. I get your point, but the classics are classic for a reason and when I first came to this site I'd never even heard of Thick as a Brick. Believe it or not, there's people who have yet to discover these albums and realize why they're at the top of the pile.

This website works the way it does for a reason, let's cease with the dumb suggestions that only appeal to the person suggesting them. Go make your own website then.

When a band/album makes the top 100.  That should be obvious.  WinkTongue

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Hi,

I think it satisfies a lot of people's socio-economic feeling that they are a part of society ... if Billboard says that Avatar is number one ... you gotta make sure you see what the hoopla is all about ... never mind that Roger Dean never even got a thank you ... for all the rip offs and not a single penny ...

But no ... the majority of folks do not have an independent/individual ear ... to be able to listen to things independently ... which would have varied the results considerably ...

If all you want is top ten ... fine ... at least admit it ... but you can see a lot of intelligent posts in this board and suggestions ... and the majority of folks will ignore it because it is not kissing their buns or their favorite bands!

End of story ... there you have it ... need some more elevator music? .... get the top ten list ... prog or not ... and too many of those listed in there, are not even the best representatives of what the genre really means anymore ... I would accept an ELP a lot better than I would a Genesis anyday of the week ... because up until Karn Evil, they did push the envelope and did something different and experimented with music ... and that is a valid comment and statement ... but their work is not about "prog" or "classical" (they had plenty of that!) or "pop" ... it's about their individual expression ... and without it the band did not sound good anymore (20 years later!) ...

It's hard to accept that list with its many duplicates because it's all most folks ever heard ... and saying something here often gets into waxed ears!

If you don't ignore the top ten/hundred ... I could easily sit here and say ... you have no musical taste whatsoever ... because you only know what the top ten knows ... and worse ... that is not a progressive concept at all ... so ... you decide ... if you want to be progressive ... forget the top ten ... but for fun times and talk ... that's ok ... but if you want top ten go after some of those grammie idiots and smellies ... why would you want that in prog?

Yuk!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Surely that means nobody would ever be in the Top 100? WinkTongue

By that logic nobody would ever get "banned" from the Top 100 either. WinkTongue
