Some of my favorites

Atila - Reviure
Canarios - Ciclos
Neuronium - Quasar 2C361

any one familar, got a plug or hate those grease
heads?

these are 3 necessities for exploring the mid to late
70's Spanish prog explosion.

Others of interest are
Mezquita - Recuerdos de mi Tierra
Iceberg - Sentiments
Gotic - Escenes
Haizea - same
Triana - Hijos del Agobio
Crack - Si Todo Hiciera Crack

thats just 3 CD's to buy to have knowledge of the
70's Spanish Progressive Explosion and a few more
if you like it! I think you will be impressed with the
diversity and quality. After all the 70's only happened
once. Thanks to the record companies, greed and
the think tank!

Bacamarte - Depois du Fim from Brazil in the 80's is
a great addition to the progression of this movement.

I LOVE Ciclos, but don´t think Atila are among the best spanish bands. I still have to try Neuronium.

I have some more "MUST HAVE" spanish prog CDs:

- Fusioon: "Minorisa" (one of the best, except for the last track...)

- Alameda: "Alameda" (very good melodic flamenco-rock)

- Cai: "Noche abierta" (the best andalusi rock record?)

- Triana: any of their first 3 records

- Música urbana: "Música urbana" (oustanding prog-fusion, very hard-listening)

- Eduardo Bort: "Eduardo Bort" (can´t imagine what would have happened if Eduardo had learnt to speak english...)

All of Granada's albums are really good too.

Iceberg's Tutankhamen may be their best, I think.

Haizea and Itoiz are great for prog-folkies (Itoiz is
Basque, of course, so they probably didn't consider
themselves Spanish).

I love the folk and flamenco influences in Spanish
prog.

Canarios is the best Spanish band in my opinion.

Itoiz are a fantastic Spanish folk-symph-prog kinda band that often get overlooked. They sing in Basque dialect, which is rather natty. Puts me in mind of a few classic Italian albums...

For me one of the best of the period is:

- Imán Califato Independiente - Califato Independiente

And I strongly agree with Carakhallo. Alameda should be included in the Archives: their first two albums are amazing!

We had recently discussed Canarios, and I still don't get it: I would like Ciclos much more had they left the four seasons out of it!

Yes, especially their "Ezekiel" album is really pleasant and full of great melodies.

Just a quick note to clarify that Basque (or more properly Euskera) is not a dialect but a completely different language.

The first recordings by Neuronium are fantastic, quite Tangerine Dreamesque....

Crack is one of the very few spanish prog bands that doesn't use flamenco elements in their music. It is nonetheless one of the best spanish prog band I know, in the same stule as Locanda delle fate I would say.

Other noteworthy spanish prog bands :

Vega, a fusion band

Magdalena, they include flute in their music

Cuarto menguante, one of the most under-rated spanish prog band

Borne, 'Exprime la naranja' is one of the best fusion album I ever heard

Unfortunately I didn't notice a mention of any of these bands in the archives.

Moreover, if you like folk-prog, check out the portuguese band Banda do Casaco : 'Coisas do arco da velha' recorded in 1976 is an essential folk-chamber music-prog offering from this wonderful band. And once again, a band that isn't present in the archives

In this thread is missing an essential english folk-symphonic prog band : Carmen, whose first album 'Fandangos in space' is very Gentle giantesque, full of fun, and as you may guess some spanish flamenco influences.

All the above-mentioned bands are pure genius IMHO.

I am new in spanish prog, I only have one album: Triana's eponymous album, and I just love it. Where should I go next? I mean you guys named a lot of bands, but are the classics? I was thinking of going to Los Canarios with Cyclos, because I love Vivaldi's Four seaons. Is is a good idea?

Difficult question: many people in this forum will tell you it's a wonderful idea; others, like myself, will tell you that, if you really like the four seasons, you will find them destroyed in this crappy album. Stay with I Musici for that wonderful music!

But you know, it's only my oppinion, and I know that maybe I'm not objective, since every time I listen to this album, I can imagine this guy, Teddy Bautista, playing the keyboards, and I get a stomach ache. Mr. Bautista is heading the SGAE, the Spanish RIAA, and is really loved by internauts, who usually wish he . Oh, by the way, Mr Bautista, do I own the original Canarios CD or not?

I'm glad that you like Triana, but please consider that the eponymous album is to Triana the same as ABACAB is to Genesis, or Big Generator to Yes, or Love Beach to ELP, or... you get the idea... take my advice and go for any of the first three albums by Triana instead.

If you like prog with Spanish folk influences try to get Mezquita - Recuerdos de mi Tierra, or Alameda - Alameda, or Alameda - Misterioso Manantial. If you like music with a harder edge then maybe Medina Azahara is for you, and if you like jazzy influences as well then you should try Imán Califato Independiente (mostly instrumental).

Of course, other members will give completely different advices, so you better go and explore yourself...

Anyway, happy searching!

Atila is my favorite band from Span. I don't much care for too many others that I have heard. Some that stand out are Fusioon. other good ones are Harnakis and Galadriel(the vocals are not my favorite.)   I would love to hear more of the ones that I am unfamilar with.

taste is but a matter of oppinion.

I'm going out on a limb here, but Would Santana (at least the Woodstock era Santana) qualify as prog?  True, they aren't from the united states, but they had a strong Latin influence running through them, and I always felt they were.  Anyone else?

Posted By: DallasBryan

yes, early should qualify but some may see them as
classic rock, they ride that line. But they are more
progressive than many Canterbury inclusions, they
were just good at it. Remember this is a
PROGRESSIVE ROCK site not PROGRESSIVE JAZZ
site!
