There's a pretty good metal website called http://www.metalstorm.ee - Metal Storm . I thought it would be a good idea to invite those of you who are progressive-metal fans to the site. Like Prog Archives, there is a top albums chart based on the ratings that the users give. There are actually some progressive-metal albums on the top 100 chart.  Let's enhance Metal Storm's chart.  |

Haha, PT's In Absentia is listed as a metal album But this is a seriously awesome list. Death, Opeth, Agalloch, Dream Theater, Ayreon, Orphaned Land, Anathema, Pain of Salvation, Tiamat, Isis, Tool, and Arcturus all made the list, with Death topping #1 and #2 and Opeth in the top ten. Metal Storm readers listen to some good stuff  |

By the way, that's a GREAT list. Most of those would be in my top 100 metal albums as well The presence of Crimson by Edge of Sanity made me very happy  Wasn't really expecting that one.-Jeff -------------

Keep in mind, with all polls like this, it is like a popularity contest. We're guaranteed to get some classic Iron Maiden, Death, Metallica, Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, etc. before more modern prog-metal bands.Still, they got into the top 100 albums ever released in metal history, which is very significant IMO. I'm not at all surprised to see PoS in their current positions. I'm a little surprised to see that Remedy Lane was rated higher than The Perfect Element, though. I've always thought The Perfect Element was a stronger album. -Jeff -------------

I love both TPE and RL. I can't decide which I like better. I'm happy to see Ayreon's "Into the Electric Castle" on the list. I love that album as well. It's currently at the bottom of the list and might drop off though. |

TPE is one of the most influential progressive metal albums out there, where as Remedy Lane is great, but not nearly as historically important. -Jeff -------------

Painkiller at #3 is too high IMO. It isn't even Priest's best album (I believe Sad Wings of Destiny holds that honor). |

I have everything on their top 10, apart from the two Death albums. I'll have to check them out. Opeth made the top 10! Bloody awesome! And DT made the top twenty. We prog fans can't really ask for more. I think the prog metal and prog-related (Led Zep, Deep Purple, etc) subgenres are pretty well represented on this list. Frankly, I'm surprised to see Death make such a strong showing - I mean, they put out some good albums, but none as strong as "Master of Puppets" or "Reign in Blood". I'd have liked to have seen a few more "underdogs" in there, like Cirith Ungol,'s "Frost and Fire", and Satan's legendary "Court in the Act" - a seminal album if ever there was one. It's a shame that neither Celtic Frost or Napalm Death make an appearance too. I'd also liked to have seen Saxon, Aerosmith, Scorpions and AC/DC represented, as the sole band in that chart representing metal's rock and roll roots is Motorhead. The chart reads like metalheads want to pretend that metal has next to nothing to do with rock and roll! The presence of Death at #1 and #2 is very telling about the voters overall tastes, of course, and the entire chart speaks volumes about the average age. For that age group, I'm also surprised not to see Pantera, Lamb of God, As I lay Dying and Between the Buried and Me - but that could just be me and my personal appreciation of metal. Some great albums there, these niggles aside - I own 28 of them! ------------- The important thing is not to stop questioning. |
