"Battle of the Prog Bands" is a tournament I set up where you vote for your favorite Progressive Rock group out of the selections given, all part of a bracket to find the greatest Progressive Rock group of all time. This round, we are doing the first part out of three to find the best Symphonic Prog group. Your choices are Renaissance, The Flower Kings, Genesis, and Anglagard.
Here's the bracket so far:
Personally, I'm going to have to vote for Genesis, my favorite band of all time.

Almost academic work?!! I voted for Genesis ( even if don't like them too much). Because Renaissance is too marginal (for symphonic prog), and Anglagard and Flower Kings both are just good immitators (no innovators).

If it was more even, but Genesis nearly has a 30 point lead. I expected it to happen, if they were more even I would be tempted to vote for different band just to kick Genesis out of the running for once.

Änglagård's Hybris is my favourite album from this bunch, but Genesis has lots of quality albums, so it would be approppriate to vote for them. At this point it doesn't make much of a difference what I vote, but Änglagård it is out of respect and sympathy.

Genesis for me.
I love these kind of things.
One thing I might have done, if I had the patience, would be to build a round by round 'seeding' into the draw. For example, the top two most popular groups in terms of votes would be placed at opposite ends of the draw, so there would be less chance of two 'super' groups meeting one another in the earler stages.
That would be tough in this instance though as you've gone down the 'genre' route.

I agree - while I love TFK and Anglagard (esp Space Revolver and Hybris, respectively) - Genesis is in a whole different category for me. Then again, that might have something to do with the fact that my wife gave me Genesis' 1973-2007 live box set for Christmas!
Oh, Renaissance is very nice as well - wish I had been able to catch them on their recent tour...

I love the incredible sophistication and maturity of Anglagard's second album, which to me isn't derivative at all (a criticism that might be successfully levelled at Hybris, which was to me the inferior work anyway) but Genesis takes the vote simply because they had more material and had an incredibly huge impact on prog, and were one of the founders of symph.
That being said I'm voting for Anglagard. The whole point of these tournaments is the underdog vote. Speaking of which, let's see if we can get Atomic Rooster to at least the quarter finals.

Genesis is hugely popular, in part because of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. And they are influencial. But the Flower Kings are on the cutting edge right now, and have yet to "sell out" like Genesis did after Peter Gabriel left. It's unfortunate that Pink Floyd has little competition, and unfortunate that Yes vs. Genesis will happen so early. The Prog Metal section will be very difficult and likely contentious.
