This might be a bit hard if we widen it to how many LPs and cassettes you own. So I'm just going to say CDs. Im 27, and have been collecting compact discs for about 7 or 8 years. My entire collection is on Itunes, and it says I have 276 albums at present. This includes discs which are double disc sets. Might not seem like much to some of you guys, but I'm starting to run out of space to put them! Not to mention wallet space, when one of my many favourite artists produces a new record.

I don't really do the whole downloading thing the kids are into these days.

My uncle has more than 1000 CDs and countless other things on vinyl, most of both are prog.LOL

I'm not sure of the number of CDs, but the complete number of all my music releases (CDs, LPs, cassettes, video cassettes, DVDs and such) is 1580 at the moment. Here's the complete list:  http://muusikoiden.net/levylista/selaa.php?list_id=4528&letter=* - http://muusikoiden.net/levylista/selaa.php?list_id=4528&letter=*

I ran out of space years ago and about half of my collection is stashed away in the basement. It hurts but of course it´s the albums I listen to most seldom that ended up there. I don´t keep count anymore. I stopped about 10 years ago when I reached 1000. Let´s put it this way. I´ll never stop or be satisfied with what I got, but my wife says no no noLOL.

About 420 CD's, and maybe 60-80 LP's (i'm getting rid of most of them i think. LP's that is!)

I had a big clear out a year ago and sold about 400 CDs on ebay.

I've got a few hundred cassettes in my loft - which I haven't got round to sorting out yet.

I used to have a vinyl LP collection of about 600 but sold most of them and gave the rest to charity (I had nothing to play them on - after my record player broke))

I now only collect CDs.  I've got a collection of around 900, about 300 of which are Prog albums - the rest are a mixture of jazz, classical and other types of rock music.

I have been buying music in one form or another (Vinyl, cassette and CD) since I was 15, which is 30 years now.

I prefer to buy CDs and upload them onto Itunes.  I have never paid (or ever will) for a music download from the internet.

I own just above 500 CDs now. I used to buy many CDs, but now I mostly download music from places like http://www.mp3panda.com,%20http://mp3city.com.ua/  - www.mp3panda.com, http://mp3city.com.ua/  and http://www.emusic.com/ - http://www.emusic.com/  or listen in Spotify. I am a very large consumer of music and buying everthing on CD would be strictly impossible for me economically at this point in time. However, I still buy some CDs if they are very cheap or impossible to find as legal downloads. I never download illegally.

I have several orders out right now actually: Casino - Casino, Red Jasper - Anagramary, Tempest - The Double-Cross, Mandalaband - Eye Of Wendor and the new one.

In the future, when I'm rich Tongue, I would like to buy many of the CDs that I now only have as mp3's, primarily the good ones or to complete my collection of certain bands.

No CD's and vinyl anymore - I've transferred everything to digital and always get MP3s now.  I used to have 1,000+ CDs and 500 albums on vinyl.  Changing to MP3 files certainly saves on storage space in the house and its easier to search for albums/tracks!  It also means that the music is available wherever I want it to be in the house, in the car or on my person.

Total collection is over 3,500 albums across a wide range of genres and still growing fast.

The collection is backed up on two hard discs and a further copy to 40 DVDs is stored at a friend's house just in case of a fire.  Can't be too careful!

1422.  I've had to seriously put the brakes on collecting.  I peaked at 132 in 2004.  This year its only been 34.  I'd encourage new collectors to start a spreadsheet log of your titles including date you got the title (which I didn't start doing until '99).  I never did catalog my LPs, which is unfortunate because my house flooded this year and most of those were on lower shelves.  My boss expressed interest in adopting those and is in the process of salvaging the discs.  We're running into titles that should have been on the top shelf as they are out of print and/or I didn't get CD versions yet.  If you look at the collage in my sig, everything from the shelf with the joystick and below was damaged.  About three shelves worth.

For a few years I've kept log of my purchases per month, I'm sure this year was my best year ever with 239 albums bought (that's only the ones I've bought, I guess there's about a hundred that my girlfriend has gotten, perhaps next year I'll make a combined list), too bad I think I've lost the lists from previous years...

Over the last few months I've been converting my cassette collection to CDR's and donating the tapes to the Op Shop so those titles are now part of the CD collection (does that count??) I've been collecting music since I was about 12 (1970). In high school (early 70's) I had over 100 LP's, more than any of my friends could believe. Then I had them all stolen from the school when I was doing radio shows for the cafeteria music programs so I had to start all over again.

Current collection:

Titles on CD = 2915
Titles on LP = 1000 (approx).

I'm doing a major reno to my house in the spring which will include a media room (a family room, but not for the family LOL). I've dedicated one full wall (22' x 10' ) to store all my media, CD's, LP's, DVD's and Blue Rays. My biggest challenge is how much room to leave for expansion. My wife is not overly excited about the fact that I'm planning on acquiring even more, but what are you going to do? Music really is my only vice.

About 750 prog and prog related. Besides that about 250 mainly various artists, metal, pop and such and classical. So about 1000 in total. Also 200 vinyls and some 150 digital files of CD's I used to own.
I'm afraid the digital files will expand in the future.
After all, nothing beats an original CD or vinyl, right ? ...

At last count, I had 650 CD's. About 300 of which are prog. I've got around 400 vinyl albums, about 200 of which are prog (many also on CD, though)

I seem to be downloading more these days, as I'm running out of space in my tiny flat to keep piles of CD's..

Around 3000, I guess. I have stopped counting. I am just making sure I do not buy any duplicates.

Just in case burglaries/fire/natural disaster, I always copies the CDs over to a couple of big external harddrives and store one of them in another house. The same goes with my birth certificate, family pictures and other pictures.

Cds may not be worth much of anything right now, but im sure vinyls verent either in the 50s and 60s

one day, (original) cds will be worth something, i think. it's weird because the sound quality for some of the original CDs pressed werent of very good audio quality. the rereleases and remasters are the better ones, but arent as old....

then again, cassettes arent worth s**t either, so who knows

What does everybody think about the future of CDs? As more and more people will go over to mp3 will CD-collections become a rarity? Will used CDs become cheap and new ones more expensive (if they are made at all)?

CD will become a rarity like LP today but it may take more time. But personnaly i prefer keep MP3 on CD-R. So the future of CD is the CD-R???

I don't keep CDs anymore.  I buy music and if its on CD I sell it back somewhere as soon as I've ripped it.  My music library has 51,632 songs (tracks) in it, so averaging that out at about 11-13 tracks per release I'd probably have somewhere in the area of 4,500 give or take a few dozen.

Hi,

I think around 1K ... and no they are not catalogue'd ... and I still have over 1500 LP's ... I'm hoping to slim that down by another 100 or 200 this coming year in exchange for the CD's.

Problem is that I have way too many LP's that are not on CD yet, and they probably never will ... and that's sad ... there's a lot of great music ... that will be left behind and already has been left behind.

But there is a difference ... I don't "collect" numbers ... I only keep and have the stuff I love ...

I think the death of CDs has been greatly exaggerated. There are still music stores everywhere, and there will always be people interested in having a physical hard copy of an album. I have my whole CD collection on Itunes, but I like having the actual discs as well.

Some music just can't be listened to as singles. You have to hear the whole album. I wager a lot of people who buy CDs these days are 'album' listeners. If you only wanted one song, then you'd go buy a single on the Itunes store like all the kids are doing. I think that people who buy a single track off the Net are not serious music fans, as it just means the songs are ephemeral and disposable. I agree with Steve Wilson's opinion on downloading (expressed very well on the Insurgentes DVD)

iTunes says I have 279 albums, but that's not entirely accurate because in relatively small classical collection a CD can be catalogued as two albums (i.e. Violin Concerto by Beethoven and Mendelssohn) and multiple CDs can be catalogued as one large album (i.e. Beethoven's Symphonies), and I also still have a couple of single tracks from eMusic free downloads or other single track samples downloaded from somewhere. eMusic has allowed me to get a lot more albums, although I don't even have time to listen to most of them.

I reached a collection of > 400 before the end of 2007, I think it was actually closer to 500, but I sort of hit a slump after that - just didn't know what to buy next. Then, in 2008, I discovered prog. I ended up selling or giving away near 100 of my old collection, but I've probably purchased around 200 prog albums since then. So probably somewhere near five or six hundred by now. (People who come visit me are always asking why I have so many)

And I got about 200 vinyls for Christmas as I inherited my parents collection; not sure how much I am going to keep yet though.

Actually with proper bitrates (>192kbps) which are used by all the major mp3 stores today, you can't really hear a difference. And back in the 80s and 90s listening tests showed that CD sound is superior to vinyl ... it was ruined by bad mixes and re-masters of vinyl releases for a while, but those problems have long been solved. All that's left today is the "loudness war" ... but that is largely a choice of the artists and their record companies ... if they want their music to sound like that, then that's their choice, but please don't blame it on the medium.

Totally in agreement with that.  The best thing about vinyls are their album cover art.  Plus they look pretty cool under a black light.  But yeah, many early CD releases were just copies of the masters used to make the LPs and not specifically mastered for the CD format.

There is absolutely a difference between vinyl, CD and mp3 quality. vinyl is uncompressed sound, CDs are slightly compressed and mp3s are heavily compressed. I can deal with 320 kbps mp3, but 192 is definitely not comparable to CD.

I counted that I had exactly 60 CDs on my shelf, that is in their cases with booklets and everything. I have a couple cases of mix CDs and discs without cases, so I'll guess in totaly I probably have about 90. I used to download a ton off iTunes and I still do when I have a gift certificate, so on my iTunes collection I probably have around 120 whole albums. And then I have some records from my dad's vinyl collection that he doesn't want, so maybe 140 albums total.

Too many CD's.  The cabs hold around 800.  They are piling up around the house.

290 CDs, 3 vinyls (Rick Wakeman's Six Wives..., Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, and Allman Brothers' Eat a Peach).  The vinyls aren't albums which carry any specific meaning to me, but I found them all for cheap prices, so I figured why not. LOL  3 or 4 music DVDs now as well.

My only problem with CD as a medium is that they can easily get scratched, leading to the disc skipping, or that your PC won't recognise it when you're trying to rip it to Itunes.

I've had to repurchase some of my collection, or burn replacement discs, because the aluminium layer has started to rot away, making playback impossible. I bought some of those plastic wallets to store my discs in, which may have caused the problem. The wallets were probably made of cheap plastic, not PVC, which probably oxidised the metal. So now I always keep my CDs in their cases and out of sunlight, etc.

Has this happened to anyone else? And which is more reliable and resistant to damage? Vinyl or CD?

Apart from their destructability, CDs are a great format. The sound quality is very clear.

I'm always fairly careful with my CDs.  The only thing I've noticed which is particularly destroyable is the cases.

I own 10 cd's

...and about 400 vinyl's.
I find it ironic vinyl's endure the test of time so much better then cd's. I've got records from the sixties that still sound as if they were new, almost no-one has a cd of the beginning eighties that still works.

All that's left today is the "loudness war" ... but that is largely a choice of the artists and their record companies ... if they want their music to sound like that, then that's their choice, but please don't blame it on the medium.BTW: Here's my collection distribution:Smile

I don't agree with you. I just got my first vinyl of Opeth and I finally understand for the first time what modern prog is about. The music started to sound 'alive'. No cd or mp3 ever reached this very important point for me. I agree it's only for a few among us to hear the difference between mp3 192kbps and the original cd, but the cd fails short in every aspect to sound as good as a vinyl record.

What your saying about the loudness war is totally true though. A loudness war did occur in the vinyl age, but to record louder on a vinyl it takes more space, so they had to quit because of the lack of space. But it's sometimes funny how much louder Kayak II sounds then Motherheads Ace of Spades (for example).

About 250 maybe. Some dreadful ones (ie teenage bad metal, boring indie etc) at my parents' house which I can't quite throw away for some reason, a bit like the equally grim goth and psychedelic clubbing gear I'll never wear but can't get rid of... In Liverpool I have about 100 and rising... I haven't counted but know that they are far outnumbered by my books.

hundreds? I only have about ... perhaps 30 CDs, more or less. I just bought It's Hard and Second's Out for Christmas. With the Napster pay service included, It looks like I have something like 300 albums on my WMP, but the data is in a real mess and it could be far more or far less in strict practice. I'd have to manually sort all the data into distinct albums and such and count it to get a good read. In any case, a good deal of data is deleted from the WMP every so often and new data brought in from Napster, so really there is no major limits to the amount of music I can listen to at any one time. The only limit is whether the artist has a Napster page. For artists like King Crimson, this is not the case. I own a greatest hits from them. If its not on Napster, or if I really, really like it, I'll buy the album. Unfortunately ease of access has caused my musical tastes to evolve somewhat mainstreamish, my major investigations last year:

Talk Talk
Bob Dylan
Eric Clapton
Phil Collins Solo

You can see the progression from art rock to mainstream pop.

If I was buying CD's, I would have perhaps explored classical Prog more, but I admit to feeling a little hostile to the idea of modern prog, neo-prog and "foreign" prog. I'd rather explore old music that isn't prog then new music that supposedly is.

I have over 2,000 CD's, about 500 vinyl (LP's and 12"), maybe 150 store-bought cassettes, and about 150 cassettes that have songs I've taped from albums I later sold...  the cassettes were all bought and recorded in the 80's, before I started buying CD's.  About half of my vinyl LP's I keep for the artwork, though I have the CD's. Most of the rest have not been released on CD.

I've heard of cd rot but I thought it was only a problem asociated with the very early discs (early 80's). I bought my first cd in 1987 and it still plays fine and I'm yet to come across one in my collection that wont play anymore. perhaps as you say it was your storage method that caused the problem. I store mine upright in their cases.

To answer your other question, Cd's are more resistant to damage but in the long term I imagine a vinyl record that's been well looked after will have a longer lifespan. Like i said, none of my cd's are showing problems but I imagine they're not going to last forever. Ask me again 20 years. Wink

Yeah, I changed my storage method, which should help preserve their life a bit more. And I've got them all ripped to Itunes, so my collection has been preserved. But CDs are not 100% reliable.

I heard the companies claim a CD should last at least 100 years. I don't know about that.  If well looked after, they should last a long time. But it's still a little too early to see if they are long-lived enough for archival purposes (the medium has only been around since the 80s).

My dad bought his copy of Dark Side of the Moon right when CDs started being released.  It still works and plays fine now, and the only storage method he's used has been keeping it in its case on a shelf the entire time.

edit: just counted. It's 740. More than I thought!

All my cassettes were ruined when my house flooded back in September.  I had some good live stuff from off the radio.  Most of them were copies of LPs that I had so I wasn't too upset about it.

1439 CDs more or less.  More or less.  More or less because if I have a box set where each disc is in it's own "jewel" case I logged in each disc.  I've never done this for double disc sets though.  Don't ask me why.  LOL

By the way, I'd highly recommend doing a log for those of you who it's not too late to do so.  I only started logging in purchase date or arrival date in 1999, but it's pretty cool to have a record of that.

I've got a good music DVD collection going now. Big smile

4-5 hundred CD's - got about 100 vinyls left, gave away 6-700 to a young proghead friend , as i have no room for a permanent record player in my living room, an unknown amount on the PC - many recorded from my old vinyls.
