Hey guys, I'm a huge fan of rock music and although I have a pretty good knowledge of prog overall, Zeuhl is a genre which I am new to. Could anybody help me find a good place to start? Cheers.

For some reason, the suggestion of Magma for a zeuhl recommendations thread strikes me as hilarious.

I'll suggest Magma's Kobaia, 1001 Degrees Centrigrade, Weidorje ,or Zao as good places to start (but it depends on taste). I like most everything in Zeuhl.

I haven't heard K.A, but Kobaia and 1001 Degrees Centrigrade are indeed good places to start if you know that what you're expecting is the unexpected.

Not only are those particular favourite Magma albums of mine, but I was also influenced by the nick in those choices -- FusionKing. Those are good jazzy albums. Zao also has some really good jazzy music (I tend to like the début best but would rather recommend Osiris and the following albums), and Weidorje's is an awesome album (if you like that, check out Paga even though it's not all good). Dun's Eros and Eskaton's Four Visions are a couple of albums that helped get me into Zeuhl, and Shub-Niggurath is a particular favourite in the category -- excellent, but more avant chamber rock. The Japanese scene is great too, but you might want to hold off on that for a little while. Still, you might want to try Happy Family or Bondage Fruit (though I love Koenjhyakkei, I don't known that I'd recommend that to start).

If you like Kansas (I'm thinking of Robbie Steinhardt on violin) then you might appreciate Didier Lockwood's violin work: Zao (as I suggested earlier) has him on Kawana (and on Zao -Live, but I don't have it), but good violin work by others such as Jean-Yves Rigaud on the first three albums. And consider getting the great live album by Magma, Live/Hhai which also features Lockwood, and he's also on the great Retropsekttw I-2 which has my favourite version of Magma's MDK.

These are very good suggestions. I would have put Kobaia last instead of first on this list, but I whole-heartedly recommend this approach. Try out later Magma once you've sampled these first.

Start with Eskaton's 4 Visions.
Better start than everything named before. I adore Magma, but Eskaton is far more accessible.

Eskaton's 4 Visions is an album that helped me really get into Zeuhl. Though that's the Eskaton album to start with, Eskaton's other albums are very good too (I really like Ardeur). Although the Eskaton (and Autopsie) offshoot band Musique Noise seems like an attempt to me to make Eskaton-type music really accessible, Fulmines Regularis is best avoided (I quite like it, but it has the reputation as one of the bad albums in the Zeuhl world, along with Magma's Merci, which I also like, and Troll Vol. II which I find, at least partially, very enjoyable).
Incidentally, I discovered Eakaton (Zeuhl) and Picchio dal Pozzo (Italian Canterbury) at the same time and both had a big effect on me.

Thanks, I mentioned it an earlier post as one that got me into Zeuhl, but didn't automatically recommend it just in case the "operatic" vocals may be a turn-off. The vocals are what made it special for me. Like a lot of music before, I initially discovered the music thanks to the streaming track at PA which blew me away, without checking I think that one's "Attente", and so got the album quite quickly -- definitely well worth a listen. That and Weidorje's are usually albums I recommend quickly to Zeuhl newbies.
However, I still think for someone with Fusion in the name, Magma's first two along with the Zao recommendations might be good places to start too (though Kobaia wouldn't be an easy one for many -- I think more would find 1001 Degrees more accessible).

Hi, Zeuhl virgin here........
OK, I like that Eros album by Dun. I believe I gave it 3 stars. I also like one of the two singles I got with Magma. See my review. But if you recommend Eskaton as my first real ticket to mayhem..... ehh, Zeuhl, I will go with that. I will order tonight.
I got the Magma albums, but I am not sure if they are the right ticket for a virgin.

I'm a Zeuhl newbie too. I only have one album, "E-Re" (which I got for Christmas) and a few other Magma and Koenjihyakkei songs off of Youtube and Last.fm. I think I should check out "Eros" next.

It's a bit early to give a definite opinion, but I think Emmenteht-Re is a definite 5* album and a strong contender for album of the decade (although I may be slightly biased).
Lots of good recommendations so far - if you're thinking of dipping a toe into japanese Zeuhl, Koenjihyakkei is a goos place to start. All of the albums are worth owning, but I'd probably start with Nivrayam and work forward and back from there. Ruins Symphonica is also a real treat for Zeuhl fans, while the rest of Ruins work is something you will either love or hate, although if Symphonica tickles your fancy you'll probably enjoy their other albums as well.

I am reviewing Zao's latest album, Ethnic 3 Live, which is excellent, but more on the free-jazz side of things than Zeuhl. Highly recommended anyway, even if not exactly easy listening. Through my reviewing activity I've also come across an Italian Zeuhl band (at least they are listed here under Zeuhl), Runaway Totem. I don't know their previous albums, but their latest, Manu Menes, is really something.

Last year, Soft Machine was a barrier I needed to break. In 2010, I will crack Magma. In 2011, I will crack Westlife......... although that maybe a Himalayan mountain too high for me.

Have to admit that I never thought of Magma as not accessible.
Nobody said that Carl Orff (Carmina Burana specially) was not accessible either.
I always gave music it's fair audience and court. By that I mean, listen to it on its on, not with something else in mind. The end result is an experience. Magma, for me, is ALL about experience and a lot less about "Zeuhl" or anything else. And the choral orchestration of a lot of that work is amazing to say the least and I am not sure that there even exist enough vocalists that would even try that!
And it is a massive credit that they can still do it and have you get up off your seat at the end ... and all you can say is ... WOW ... you simply will never see anything in music, so different, so well done, and so inspiring as an evening of this. But if your mind is set that you have to hear something or other, then Magma is not for you. You don't come to any zeuhl (god what a term!) with preconceived notions since the majority of it is not designed in conventional music idioms at all. And these folks know it!
I remember the very first time I heard it - around 1974. I had known Carmina Burana for 10 years already, so when I heard it, done with a guitar, drums and bass ... I went ... wow ... that is far out! For me, unlike most here, it was a come alive of a musical tradition into the modern age ... our generation has really done it! And explored and expanded the music into levels that are very important, and need to be better explained and understood so we can validate its history!

Seems like One Shot are already giving concerts with Bruno on keyboards. They accompanied Magma in the Japanese tour. I wonder whether Bruno's replacement of Manu Borghi means a change in sounds. Manu played a lot of synths, while I only know Bruno playing electric piano for Magma.
Also, who's this Japanese guitarist that joined One Shot on stage? Maybe Jon knows him.

That's Kido Natsuki on guitar if I'm not mistaken. And you're right, that is Tatsuya Yoshida in the second picture too.
Edit: If I'm right, I seem to remember hearing that One Shot and Korekyojin were doing a show together, so I'm guessing the guy facing away from the camera in the white shirt in the second shot is Korekyojin's bassist Nasuno Mitsuru. That would have been an amazing show, I'm sure.

Mr.Calyx,
who I have always found to be the most knowledgeable person about
progressive music out there, has posted some updates about Magma on the
Progressive Ears website. I will try to summarize.
1) Magma is
going into the studio in early September to lay down the tracks for
their new album. So far, only Felicite Thosz will be on the new album.
Sl*g Tanz will NOT be on the album, as Vander says that the two pieces
would not go very well together. Something that I find odd, since they
have been playing Sl*g Tanz and FT back-to-back since early 2009.
2)
Christian Vander is going into the hospital in September for an
operation on a herniated disk. So, CV had to cancel his appearance at
this year's RIO festival.
3) Zess will NOT be recorded for the new album.

^ Thanks for the MAGMA update i didn't know all that stuff.
Listened to AMYGDALA's "Complex Combat" today.Man this can be oppressive music, they don't let up the intensity very often.I love the fact that ONE SHOT's Daniel Jeand'heur is on this drumming, and he's killer.

Another one i highly rate is ABUS DANGEREUX's debut.Listed here under Jazz/Fusion but it has a definite Zeuhl flavour at times.Another classic from France.

Had to mention Daimonji's IMPROG tonight.Great album although i find the vocals a little difficult. He sounds like Christian Vander when he uses his high voice. Yoshida on drums here is killer as usual.

Great album but I hear more Canterbury than Zeuhl.

I just listened to their album a few nights ago and i can definitely hear a strong Zeuhl flavour.Yes it has that Canterbury shade as well which maybe why they are in Eclectic.I still think i'd have them listed under Zeuhl but that's just my opinion.By the way i think that album is brilliant.

An interview will be published with Francois Thollot tonight, London time. His new band Scherzoo (under evaluation) has just released an excellent zeuhl/canterbury album.
I love zeuhl which for me is the most progressive music of all music styles. Enough said about my strong beliefs.

Does anybody here have the most recent Panzerpappa release from 2006 called Koralrevens Klagesang? I hear a lot of Zeuhl in it alongside some Canterbury and inspiration from the early RIO bands. I´ve been listening a lot to bands from Sweden and Norway the past few weeks, and Panzerpappa just recently got a spin again. Brilliant stuff!
BTW I have that Kultivator album as well, and I think it fits in nicely under the Eclectic moniker as it frolics in both Zeuhl and Canterbury. I love the album regardless though...

^ Yes it's pretty good. I heard some of it on the radio and downloaded it shortly thereafter. I remember paying for it though - maybe it was one of those 'pay whatever you want' type things?

I just don't like Thollot on drums, he should stick to other instruments. That's why Contact is great, he got maybe the best rhythm section on the planet to play on it.

Listened to Soleil Zeuhl's re-issue of Four Visions by ESKATON today and was promptly blown away.I had the original with different cover art but udi Koomran has done an amazing job with the sound here. Not only that the bonus tracks are as good as the studio album in my opinion.

Almost the best. If he'd been able to get Christian Vander on drums, then he would have had the best rhythm section on the planet. Daniel Jeand'heur isn't too shabby, though.
