Just the first 10 superstars that came to mind.  Who dominates the most?

If it's in the entire world, then obviously, and by far, Pele. Maybe Jordan and Ali could be anywhere near.

If it's in the USA, then maybe Woods or Ruth or any of the other ones.

Parameters of judgement are yours.....though I will say I'm talking about actual mastery of the sport more than about popularity.

If that's the parameter, maybe Jordan.

Kind of a biased selection on my part, but I have to go with the Greatest Detroit Lion in Lions' history Barry Sanders.

If you mean who is the greatest icon within their own sport then it has to be Babe Ruth followed by Ali and Gretzsky.  I don't believe there was ever an athlete as revered during their own era as Ruth.

how does Barry Sanders keep coming up in polls on this website? sure he was a great player but he's no icon rising above all other nfl players, not even others at his position

My sports icon is still Arnold Palmer though, for my money no finer human being has ever graced the world of sport.  No matter who you are or what you do in his presence you feel not only accepted but important.  He is the King for a reason.

It is a matter of perspective.  Barry Sanders was a God here in Detroit.  And you have to remember that he put up the kind of rushing numbers that he did playing for a team that has never been able to block in their history.  If he had had a chance to play for an actual good team, his stats might have doubled.  Barry says that James Brown was the greatest running back ever, but he was before my time, and I never saw him play, so I can't make that comparison.  On the other hand, Stevie Yzerman is probably the bigger sports icon of the two here in Michigan.  This state and city so desperately wants and needs a good football team. Although it would be a sign of the apocalypse and of couse Hell would have to have frozen over, but if the Lions ever win the Super Bowl, this state will throw a party that is second to none to celebrate that accomplishment.

Voted for Gretzky based on my fanboy parameters, Jordan and Pele were the other names that could have been, but I just don't know enough about them, except that they ruled all when they played. I've never heard of Sanders and Clemons so I suppose they're baseball players or american footballers?

Ah, Scott had already answered for Sanders there.

From this list, Pele. He embodies the "joy of the game"/"joy of playing". BTW I would have expected that the parameters were related to the things that make them "icons" not to how good their were in their respective disciplines. My supreme sporting icon would be however Jesse Owens. Now that's a sportsman who made a difference!

I'm gonna have to go with Tiger now.  Heyyy, where's O.J.?  Even though he did get away with murder, buying himself a Get Out Of Jail Free card, he was kind of funny in The Naked Gun movies.

I can't vote for Tiger Woods.  He's a cheater.  Wink

My vote will go to Michael Jordan.  Even though I am not a sports fan, he was an icon when I was growing up.

And Space Jam was pretty good too.  Tongue

El Diego: Greatest footballer ever , his personal life I just dont care.

Roger Federer: 15 Slams and counting

Juan Manuel  Fangio: 5 times F1 champion in an age where your only protection was a leather helmet.

From that list I know just a couple of names such as Pele , Tiger Woods MJ and Babe Ruth I know that he was a baseball player. Who are all the others?

I can cut out at least half of these as Whothef**karethey? is the first Q that comes to mind.  I guess they're Americans.

I have heard of Babe Ruth but wouldn't recognise him so no.

Has to be Ali or Pele or Woods (Jordan 4th on list).

Ali it is cos he is an icon  (But tomorrow I might say Pele!)

I think too be an Icon you have to be known outside your home town!?

I'm sorry due to your lack of kindness you'll have to look it up yourself instead me posting a paragraph about him

No unkindness meant.Smile   I understand that he might be your favourite sportsman - But an Icon?  You have to be known outside Boston or The States to be one Big smile

"In their own era" is the key to why Ruth was the greatest.  His records may have been broken later, but he played in an era where everything was different.  Ruth would usually hit more home runs than any other team in baseball combined.

Hm...I voted for Gretzky because I can't think of another major sports league that was as completely ted by one player. He really is the face of hockey

Yep, Gretz or Jordan for me too.

I really blew this poll by including the word icon.  I really was interested in who was the most ridiculously dominant during his playing years vs his peers.
