Well if God/evolution wanted us to be just friends, we wouldn't be attracted to each other, now would we?

Yeah, but I have manners...
And, I'm not attracted to all of them - it's just a natural thing.

I would say Not a chance in hell but the concept of hell is a construct of the human mind and not a physical place so any probabilities relating to such a location are somewhat difficult to compute, for all I know the actually chance of friends being just friends in hades would be pretty high considering the torment involve in being close to someone of the opposite sex without any intimacy could be considerable, while in opposite human construct of heaven two friends of the opposite gender could be banging like bunnies with regular frequency.
However in my experience I have to say "no" - unless both are gay of course.
------------- What?

There is only one condition to being just friends with a woman - you can't fancy them (even remotely)
I'm not talking about some drop dead gorgeous stunner here, I mean after a few drinks, a few laughs, a few coffees and a few exercise videos, if they are even borderline physically attractive to you, it will end up in intimacy (either spurned or reciprocated) if given sufficient time.
For my best buddy to have breasts, they would have to point to the ground and require a milking stool.

looks like you're wounded - I'm for 'anythingofthatnature' by the way however - as for the initial question - I would say both of course ... and this makes it complicated really ...

I don't see the problem - I've a load of friends who happen to be female & attractive, yet the idea of being 'more than just friends' has never cropped up, nor need it in a mature relationship

I had to vote "Yes". I have few female friends and some of them even look quite nice (not realy my taste but that's something few drinks can solve) and still I feel no need to have sex with them. It is true that most of them are married but I don't think you can blame my high moral for not even trying.
The only fair question is am I afraid to get a NO answer ?

Most of my friends are women come to think of it. The one's I actually consider "friends" anyway, rather than the ones I just acquaint with. Don't get me wrong, I've got my boys to have a good old laugh with and to do what us guys do best with (i.e. getting horrifically drunk, pulling, partying, doing dumb sh*t for the pure fun of it), but I find I can talk to women about sensitive stuff moreso. And I have a lotta sensitive stuff to talk about so you do the math. I voted for the first option.

Frankly, any adult relationship has some degree of sexuality to it. Sexuality comes in all sorts of shapes, colors, and intensity. And it certainly doesn't mean any of it goes anywhere near physical contact.
Dawkins and Mike being a perfect example...

In re: to Finn's avatar: That scene in Battlestar where Kara and Adama Jr. were boxing each other, was a rather unfortunate scene for the show, but it also was somewhat instrumental in showing Kara's ability to stand toe to toe with the big dogs. And they couldn't just be friends.

It depends. If you're an atheist, you see women as the ones who didn't develop testes, they are matter of study; if you're an agnostic, you doubt until you see evidence there's nothing behind those pants; if you're catholic priest, women are your impossible dream, psychosis may take hold of you; if you're muslim, they are your servants; if you're an avant-garde prog fan, they're fiction, their existence less relevant than that of the harshest dissonance.
They can be friends if there's no attraction whatsoever. With any hint of attraction, even though a friendship-like relationship can be mantained, it will never, never be like a true 100% interest-free friendship.
I guess... I have a girlfriend but not too many girl-friends....

A related item to my previous post, sexual rivalry can insinuate even into the strongest friendships ever. (Thinking of this pack of male teenage "friends" I was watching at a game last night, and how their behavior changed when a female entered.)

I can be only friend or collegue with women: I offered to co-worker to go at the museum on a saturday (I live in Paris) but she never called back... And since my favorite woman is lesbian, it might happen that I would be nothing but friend with any woman I could encounter.

It's funny, when you throw in the whole heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, marriage thing, as long as people respect one another and are mature and not on the prowl, so to speak, the answer is yes.

Of course they can. I've never really understood the entire idea that people of different gender can't be friends without anything sexual between them, maybe it's an American thing?

Yes.
While I admit there's always a tiny part of me that is looking to my female friends through a sexual prism (and for some of them, not only tiny) - there are also two female friends - BEST female friends - who are just friends. They're both of my age, intelligent and attractive. We are sharing our intimate stories a good deal, talking about death, fears, happiness, finances, sex (in depth, describing particular orgasms, kinky stuff, and so on). I never imagined myself in sexual interaction with them (except as a gedankenexperiment, bith with zero arousal).
On of them, who doesn't hesitate to say what she think, summed it up nicely: " I can't f*ck Moris. He's like my brother."
