Maybe this isn't a wise idea for a poll ? its aim is to stimulate some discussion, that's all ...  Stern Smile

Meh . . . he's not doing BAD, if that's what you're asking.

I really don't think I'm going to vote, though. My political outlook is far less black-and-white apparently than yours. No President is either all good or all bad. In some ways, the man is doing very well, and in others I completely disagree with his decisions. So if all you're trying to do is stimulate discussion, why make such a simple-minded poll? Why not pick a specific policy of Obama's for us to vote on rather than his entire presidency as a whole? It causes me to suspect different motives than you claim to be behind this thread.

I suppose so.

I'm more pissed off with nearly everyone in Congress. Their behavior this past lifetime of mine has been shameful. I can't believe they get paid to pass pointless laws and shame our nation.

Well, we've gone past September and haven't had a major terrorist attack.  The Bush administration sat on their butts and let us get attacked at the beginning of their term.  The banks were bailed out (started in the last administration) but the economy still sucks for a lot of us regular folks.  He has not put any political muscle towards meaningful health insurance reform.  It almost seems like he's setting himself up for a one term presidency.  On the other hand Clinton being much less liberal than he was perceived seemed to work in his favor for re-election.

True but what I was hoping for is that if you feel positive you would vote Yes and if you were feeling more on the negative side you would vote No ..

Plus many consider Ft. Hood to be a terrorist attack.  There were many failures within the Pentagon regarding that lunatic prior to his attack.

That was the action of a sole lunatic as far as we know.  The 911 attacks had much deeper roots and it could have been averted.  What Hasan did could not have been forseen.

I suppose we could disqualify from service everyone who isn't a white bread American, but white bread Americans have also engaged in terrorist attacks on our own country, IE Timothy McVeigh, Ted Kaczynski, et al.

It was a premeditated attack based on ideology.  That's terrorism Brian.  You don't plan for weeks, choose special cop-killer bullets, give away your possessions, and yell "god is great" just because you suddenly snapped from job pressure.  The signs were there and missed.  People have been nervous about this guy for some time, but failed to take firm action, perhaps for PC reasons.  This will come out in the investigation.

I don't care about assigning blame.  But it sure as hell *was* terrorism by any logical definition of the word.

That's kind of an ignorant statement with all due respect. But I'll forgive it since your profile says you don't even live here, so you've clearly only been hearing the anti-America propaganda overseas. Wink

Bush was pretty idiotic, but no way in hell he was as corrupt as Nixon or as big a prick as Jackson. And yet, neither of those men were 'all bad', either.

I see the poll is not going in Obamas favour..? Confused

You wanted change, you got it....so far....Obama is one of the best Presidents to gain office, from a British point of view his reforms on a new fairer  Health Service, peace talks (though difficult and frustrating)  and urgent changes regarding tackling climate change are spot on - you don't want another Bush, surely..? Ouch

I'd take him as Prime Minister of Canada.

I think he's rather being damned by mnay with faint praise at the moment, though.  He's a moderate and seems in some ways to be playing things, some might say, a bit too safe.  Those who want to see the status quo preserved often dislike him, while those of a more revolutionary disposition don't see enough change.  I've had some problems with certain policies, and was hoping for someone rather more radical.

I supect we'll see a greater push from him for real change later on in his presidency -- of course his powers are very limited in terms of implementation.

I did not vote. I missed the choice "too early to say".

Reading the other posts here I was surprised to see people are blaming Bush for 9/11. No president can take care of any action done (or in this case, not done) by so many people. A president should lead the way and give direction.

I prefer the atitude of "let's speak" on the atitude of "I am the sheriff" so I think Obama is trying to do the right things in a better way then Bush but he should be judged according to his success and not according to his atitude and as I said in the begining it is too early to judge him now.

I'm feeling disappointed. That's all I can say. I still believe he is a far better choice than any right-winger, but that's mostly based on ideology. He has been inept to make congress do anything. He has been more concerned in appearing on tv on a daily basis than in actually making his idiots do something. About the economy, nobody could've done miracles and have the US prospering again in less than one year, but I guess we're going in the right direction. About terrorism, I really can't understand people here, probably because I come from another country where insecurity is much more a daily thing than here. I guess, anyway, Ft Hood attacks were not his fault but the FBI's or whichever agency had to control that.

I think the lunacy of the right has not helped this government do anything anyway. All that repugnant tea-baggerin' and the ignorance about health care couldn't helped any president. I still maintain that color has had an effect on that (and I will not elaborate more...it is not necessary).

Let's say that if nothing has changed in one year, if things continue like they are right now in 2010, then he my vote would be a NO. Even though most presidents do some things right (Nixon-China, Bush-??-something-), I think people CAN give an overall appraisal of a presidency with a "yes" or "no" vote without being called out for it....

That doesn't answer my question.

Is this going to turn into our Beatles debate all over again, or can you give a real answer this time? Why you detest Obama so much? Disagreeing with his politics is very different from going out of your way to share your dislike of him, especially when askd a simple yes or no question .

Me? I think if the healthcare bill doesn;t have the public option in it, it's worth killing. He's certainly much too Liberal for my tastes, but do I hate him? No I do not.

Personally, I wish Ron Paul would have gotten further in the republican race, but of course all those idiot neo-cons ostracised him from their group and tried to depict him as a loon. So instead we got John McCain and Sarah 'I felt ambushed by Katie Couric' Palin running on the Republican side of things. Do you honestly think we would be any better off with those two running the country?

That's about how I feel. Contrary to what might be popular to say, I don't think we've had a bad president in America for quite a long time (I'm not that qualified to say ever), despite some moral hiccups and whatnot. But they're in the spotlight for so long, under such intense scrutiny, and what with our media's desperate need to shoot us full of as much fear and distrust as possible, we tend to view each successive president as failing, worthless, etc... Depending on your point of view, of course.

I sit right in the middle politically. I maybe feel strongly about two or three issues. Beyond that, I just want a president who won't screw over the country (hasn't happened yet, except maybe, if what the History Channel says is true, what Roosevelt did with the isolationist momentum up until we got blasted at Pearl Harbor; or maybe some others before him). Bush was stubborn and home grown. Obama is flying the exact opposite direction with a lot of soft-touch and careful backpedaling. Are either what I want? Nah. But what do I know?

Obama is doing an okay job. If he gets reelected, he'll do much better next term, as he won't be as focused on keeping his image moving for a second term. But as he is now, I just don't see or hear much in the way of action.

When he got elected I thought that despite my coming disappointment and the undoubted escalation we would see on other Middle Eastern fronts, at least Obama will end the war in Iraq while infuriating me in every other aspect of his presidency.

He couldn't even do that me that one small favor.

As a fan of the Constitution I'd say no but I knew that he was a socialist during the campaign.  I'm not a fan of either party but I must say the 2010 and 2012 elections couldn't get here soon enough.  I just hope America is still America when they roll around and that the government still allows non-SEIU members to vote.

Well I deffinitely will vote YES on that poll. FDR made a great job in many aspects (including pushing the USA to world war II against almost all Americans and thank god for that).
Anna Wilson also made a very good job IMO.

Nah I'd rather destroy her because she is the greatest beacon of political ignorance I can possibly think of. That she is actually popular and thought of as good in any way besides her ability to repeat key conservative ideals and look purdy like a Miss America model, vapid and painfully grating.

Also, I'll never vote for anyone who voices the opinion that science and creationism should both be taught in schools. If you don't respect science, I wouldn't trust her with a glass of hot water, let alone any form of power.

Never claimed to be a Palin supporter, certainly not picking a pony 3 years out, though I am willing to give her a little more credit than the majority of you are.  From an experience standpoint I do believe she was ahead of Obama preceeding the election.  The Governor of any state has to have more leadership experience than a Senator that rarely even shows up to vote.  Barrack Obama is nothing special, he's not the great unifier send from above the media portrayed.  Sarah Palin is nothing special but she also isn't the complete dunce the media portrayed her as.  I suppose as a regular poster on Prog Archive though, Henry, you do have a direct line to all information Palin, that you've read her book cover to cover, and that you've spoken with her many times on many issues; so maybe we should bow to your well thought out expert opinion.  It is funny though how you can complain about her supporters having victim complex then immediately start casting stones.  I wouldn't call it a victim complex, I'd say it is a backlash to the treatment she has received since she came onto the national scene.

As per the socialism:
Socialism (American Heritage Dictionary 2009) - Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.

Under the Obama administration the federal government has seized controll over the nations major car manufacturers and the banking system (which they had already corrupted by becoming so deeply involved with organizations like Fannie Mae that in the case of Barnie Frank that statement can actually be taken literally).  The current Health Care Bill, Obama's no. 1 priority, is no more than a jumbled mess of bureaucracy, taxation, and regulation that sets up for the a complete government take over of the health care industry which would allow the government (and whomever is in control of it; be it republicans or democrats) to control all aspects of your life which involve health which is basically everything you do.  And if you say, "I don't have to buy into buy a government health care plan"(and who could blame you with their asstounding efficiency) then just wait a few years when alternatives aren't avaliable because all the business', that once took care of employee health care, pass their employees on to the government system, which is payed for by all of us, leaving private insurers with very little ability to compete against the massive government system.  As private insurers lose the ability to make a profit (which for some mind boggling reason has become an evil word in todays America) they will fold up leaving those who had policies with these companies with the option of either joining the government system or going to prison.  Yes, the federal government, under the Obama administration, is seeking the ability to imprison American citizens for not not buying health insurance.  So, yes, I do believe that Obama's agenda is socialistic in that it seeks to not only move control over private industry to the central government (which the administration has already done) but also control over as many aspects of each citizens lives as possible (the administration has a "pay tsar" for christs sake).

Phew, see I usually stay away from these political threads because I was a political science major in college and already spend four years of my life standing up for the basic principals of this nation to professors who had never spent a day in their lives outside the protection of a college campus and the sheep that hung on their every word.

Note: I have been up for three solid days straight and chose to sleep over backchecking my writing for spelling and grammer errors (not that I'm all that picky on forum posts to begin with) so if there's something in there well, you'll just have to completely ignore everything else I've ever done in my life and throw me on the "dumb" pile.

I very much doubt a government-financed system will be worse than the crap choices and doctors Blue Shield offers, been there done that.. but I guess we'll see, won't we Smiley?

It sure could be worse David.  It's not a true government plan, at least that would have some upside to it.  It's the worst of both worlds.  Leaving the insurance lobby and pharma lobbies in control while mandated people purchase from them.  Businesses may choose to drop coverage leaving people who currently have great employer based plans at the whim of paying much more for less.

It's a joke, and a hugely expensive one.  And I love how they lie about the cost, projecting 10 years out, looking at revenue for the full 10 years, but only looking at benefits post 2015.

A huge waste of money we can't afford with little positive in the plan.

Big thumbs down on Obama from here, and I voted for him

Not only for health care, but on just about every other thing to come out of his mouth to date.

Com'n... socialist...??? Obama...??? you really need to take a look to the south and understand that in United States there's no socialist in any way... the so called "left" is the most liberal you can see in the continent... just take a look to Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador and you will find a theorically strong socialist wing controlling most of the power... and even with that the ways of government are more Capitalist than anyone... you don't have socialism in any way... com'on..!!!

Yes, Mr. Hitman (for your avatar, it seems you adore hitmen). Look Manofmystery, before I say someone's socialist, I would grab a flight and go to actual socialist countries and I would read and watch a lot about socialism's history and try to learn what socialism is.

Have you ever left you home town , or your home state Manofmystery?  Have you ever seen socialism, pure non-market socialism direct to its face?

I hope you don't use the Fox News definitionn of socialism though. If so, hell, pretty much the whole f**king Europe and almost the entire world bar the US is socialist.

Btw, I'm not attacking your consevative beliefs (which I think are wrong anyway but you're free to have them). I just react to calling things by names that really don't fit.

Well, I don't say he is conservative and that he is wrong... I'm a believer of liberalism but right now is so utopic as an uncorrupted politician so... but it's right... from the US common living is like everybody who said "poor" or "social rights" is a socialist... but hell..!!! Fidel Castro rings any bell to you...??? I think is for the way of education in the US... they even called "America" themselves and there's a huge continent outside with that name... so... it's kind of selfish and overconcentrate on their own but not learning nothing outside their own country...

Obama, the rookie president has no idea what a mistake he is making sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. Its too close to India, Pakistan, China, etc. What an ill-advised procedure. Do you know how many more men and women will die for this? Thousands more,...and for what Al-Queda? bullcrap. Hey Noriega, you get rid of Al-Queda and you can go free. Or what makes you think The Russian Federation
isn't ready to pick off afew G.I.s. They've been real nice and friendly, but dont think for a minute they wont toast us. We are fools, especially Obama dancing around at the Ball. Our economy is weak and we have no barter power. Stop [playing Mr. Big Boy War Games because those europeans are sick uf us, plus they could use our real estate. I don't see America existing another 100 years Japan and the Russian Federation are the superpowers of the world. And Russia can toast Japan in about three or four minutes because of its location. Im sorry but times up Isreal, its your turn to go out and live in the middle of the med. Do something for The arabs for once.
Why doesn't Obama put a major tax hike on pornography sales. Like charging $169.99 for a new DVD
who REALLY CARES. The Politicians are all the same... I just bet you that The U.S. government has already sold California to the Europeans. Hence our crappy governer. Obama has Bush's Defense Plan Makers still in his Camp. It's obvious. When Obama was campaigning he never hinted once about sending thousands overseas to war. He was supposed to be the peacebringer because he was articulate, but now he is A PAWN. And he is AFRAID of the powers that be. Thanks Oprah, you rich people are all the same. I kinda wish goofy Goerge W. was around. At least he knew he was stupid

nah, he's not. He's depressingly conservative. He won a peace prize and then allowed an increase in troops overseas.

yeah it's none of my business but he appears to be the most important man in England based on the frequency of his appearances in the news.

This is NOT the change that people asked for... But maybe is the reasonable call. What do we know about war and foreign strategies? Let's wait and see...

Where I'm starting to lose faith is in the local front... In here, in the US, where unemployment soars and health is still a privilege...

Since matters of war are to be determined via the people and not decided by the President I would hope we know something about it.

He's saying that Congress is the one that declares war and troop increases. And that Congress is supposed to answer to the people, but that's a whole different topic. The President can only ask nicely for Congress to do such things, but he doesn't approve it in the end.
