Ever since I started becoming a more active poster on Prog Archives, I've had this weird forum anxiety. I always take a lot of time thinking over my responses, and feel bad when people respond negatively to my posts. I found this incredibly weird though because outside of computer world, I could care less what I say. I'm not afraid to say whatever I want whenever I want to anybody I want, but online, with total anonymity I really control what I say.
Anyone else have this problem?

Thinking about responses and not sounding like a fool is always a good thing. To preempt anyone who will use this perfect set-up to poke fun at me, I will make the joke for you.

Well if it's such a good thing then why don't you do it?
Anyway, few people on this site hold grudges and forget most things in a few days. Don't worry.

Not really, once you get to know everyone it isn't that bad. Like it was said in another thread, most PA members don't really hold grudges, but if you say something silly they will correct you. . It is a good thing to think about what you say before you say it, but don't be afraid of giving your opinion on anything. Different views are (or should be) always welcome.

Yep. The key is realizing that people don't really care. And eventually you, like everyone else, won't really care about what you have to say either. I think many of us at some time make the mistake of thinking that we actually matter (or at least matter far more than we think). A sense of perspective helps.

I realized it a while ago. I have been happier here since. As long as I don't troll I don't think anyone could care less about what I say, being free to say what you want makes it more interesting anyway. Most topics have been beaten to death around here, so adding a little life to threads is nice.

I have my opinions on prog and I will only respond to a thread that interest me. As I won't respond to various threads because I can be annoying or don't want to waste the person's time that posted it. I appreciate being corrected because it's educational. There are many great prog informers that belong to the site. Sometimes I will wait to see their response but, apparently they are not interested in the thread and wish to remain discreet. Sometimes it's a b tch because you'll be thinking: Oh, if only this person or that person would just reply it would bring more insight to the subject matter.

I'm the opposite I don't put much thought into my posts.I tend not to get into in depth conversations despite having an opinion because people bitch & argue all the time,I just state the facts and go about my day.Do you get this on any other forums? Some people here, like everywhere love an argument.

Yes, particularly when the flamers and trolls start, it's a combination of anxiety mixed with anger and frustration.
I tend to only be opinionated when it's a subject matter I am completely sure about.

I don't think you have to be a member of PA for very long to recognise the sorts of responses that are going to derail any decent thread. Toddler's right here by stating that we should really confine ourselves to posting in threads we are genuinely interested in, otherwise you get that tiresome hijacking of say XYZ band appreciation threads where contributions along the lines of :XYZ band are for impotent shipping clerks afraid to speak to females, get a life douchebags jeez etc (Of which I have been guilty of in the past )
Similarly, I avoid political discussions like the plague, not because I feel I don't have anything worthwhile to say, but such threads ALWAYS degenerate into slanging matches between those types who start posts with that's what's wrong with this country and those who respond with posts that commence I'm not racist/homophobic/sectarian/anti-semitic/communist/misogynistic etc but.....
A quick summary primer of 80% of all arguments on PA:
Chicken is better than fish
No, fish is better than chicken
That's just your opinion it's not fact
But more people like chicken than fish and I can prove it demographically with venn diagrams and a You Tube video
Democracy is just majority opinion, it ain't fact
Well the lazy welfare scrounging stay at home fish voters need to get off their butts then
Both are better than Marillion though ?
Yep, agreed

Apologies, I was being glib and flippant again. No offence to fans of a band I unfortunately loathe (it's my loss)

Just stay away of threads dealing with politics, religion and Roman Polanski and you'll be fine.

I don't post nearly as much as some around here. It's got less to do with anxiety and more to do with not having much worth saying. Plus I'm not as knowledgeable about a lot of stuff and I don't like showing off my ignorance. I do like making the occasional snarky remark tho.

I feel far more comfortable here than other prog sites. Too often elsewhere I can give an opinion and get a response that makes it clear that not only am I wrong for thinking so but insulted at the same time for being a dullard. The vast majority of time here, responses are helpful, polite, knowledgeable and sometimes funny. And at times we get into some very intelligent discussions. These sort of discussion groups are made of all sorts of ages and levels of knowledge - and we mustn't forget are there are folks here new to prog and wanting to learn. So I try to inform when I have knowledge to offer and try to avoid being superior - most times I hope I succeed.

A number of things cause me anxiety, but posting on internet forums is not one of them.
I dont post as much as I used to. Maybe I've said everything that I'm going to say about bands I like, and I've long since given up commenting on bands that I dont like, as there seems little point to that. I dont have the time or inclination to write blogs, attempting the disect the pysychology of prog rock. It's only music. F***ing good music, but just music nonetheless.
I have vague memories of this forum being more of a humouress place when I first joined, but maybe I'm imagining that..
