Hello to everyone here at Prog Archives,
I'm a keyboardist, and I've recently been recruited by a local band to help them cover some prog for an upcoming music festival. And even more exiting, the song happens to be my favorite of all time (Supper's Ready)!!!
The trouble is, I think I bit off a bit more than I can chew. I'm fine for doing backing chords, but that organ solo leading into Apocalypse in 9/8 has me lying in bed awake at nights . Also, I'm not sure if my gear is adequate. So far I have a:
1) Casio WK-200 Electric Piano
2) An upright acoustic piano (actually the guitarits but whatever)
3) Alesis Ion virtual analog synthesizer
4) Yamaha PSR-300 (which can do some pretty cool unusual sounds)
I'm thinking about picking up one of those 'free-if-you-move-it' organs as well, as it might make for some good stage craft.
So here are my questions:
1) Do any of you happen to have the sheet music for or a tutorial video on the organ solo in Apocalypse in 9/8 (or any other part of Supper's Ready, for that matter?). If you can give me ANY resources in this area I cannot describe how happy it would make me. You will have a special spot in my prayers for at least a few weeks .
2) Do you think my current gear should be adequate? Also, I have a pretty good laptop which I could hide on stage so if their is any software for good Mellotron sounds or something I'd love to get that aswell.
3) Are there any generic tips which you think might help?
Thank you all so much. I look forward to hearing from you. Any chord progressions, any sheet music, any video of them playing live with some good shots, would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

Welcome to PA! That is indeed a difficult song (especially on keys), and I do wish the best of luck to you, and I will try to answer these questions the best I can.
1) I found a couple of good videos on YouTube that might be of help:
2) I don't know anything about the PSR-300, but everything else should be fine. If that has some good organ tones, or you pick up the organ as mentioned you should be fine there as well.
3) Don't sweat it is all I can really say. Just practice it until the melodies give you nightmares. I'm sure that if you've been asked to be at this prog festival you are definitely a capable keyboard player, and you'll do a fine job. Remember, the only difficult part about it is the time signature! The actual notes aren't anything worth getting nervous about, but if you can master 9/8 time, this should actually be a breeze.
Just do what you do best, and if you mess up the keyboard solo, but play the climatic outro perfectly, the audience will be more than forgiving. Just remember: if you mess up the keyboard solo, don't think about it the rest of the song! You'll just get stressed out and mess up even more.
Hope all of this helps, and good luck! -Jeff

At the end of the second video I almost yelled "SIX SIX SIX!!"
I hope you do well, Tarkus.

there used to be some great footage of a PA member's band doing Suppers Ready on the Genesis page, but it's been gone for awhile

Thanks for all the help!!!
I'd seen the first Apocalypse in 9/8 video, and was able to get about 10 seconds in (heh, it's a start :D)
However the second video I had never seen before. It was very helpful and informative, and the angle was fantastic! So thanks!
As for a free organ... what do you think? http://maine.craigslist.org/msg/1410771881.html - http://maine.craigslist.org/msg/1410771881.html
It looks pretty awesome, and seems to be top quality. Plus, it's free!
The organ solo is going to be tricky, but I'm sure I can pull it off. And that could be a real crowd pleaser, which would be awesome!
Thanks again for all the help!
Regards,
Kyle

It seems worth getting to me, Kyle. It looks in great condition, and for free, why not! I've seen a Genesis cover band (The Waiting Room, if you're familiar), and after the Apocalypse in 9/8 solo was finished and the vocals came in the crowd went wild! If you just practice the time signature I'm sure you can nail it. I've been playing keys for about 3 years, and the time signature is my biggest problem. But if you really work on it, you should be much more capable than I am.
Good Luck! -Jeff

I would improvise through the whole thing. Seriously. If the audience wants a carbon copy, Foxtrot is still available on CD in many retail outlets.

Haha I wish I was halfway capable enough to improvise (or to be half way as capable as I suspect you are, J-Man!
I sent the person who owns that organ a message, and I should hear back from them soon, but in the meantime,
It's the only way, I fear

What he said.
But if you've been hired to do this, maybe you need the sheet music! So http://80.177.215.47/zip/genesis/supper.mid.zip - here 's a midi file. Download it and open it with Guitar Pro (I assume you have Guitar Pro), and you have all the notes for all the instruments! Enjoy.
Midi files ARE music sheet.

Well said, that solo is just made for improvising, whilst throwing in the odd recognisable bit here and there.
