I consider all four of these to be early metal, even though none of the bands involved were metal bands. Which one do you think had the most influence on metal overall and in particular prog-metal? Not which one do you like the best. I'm hard-pressed to choose between The Beatles and KC. While The Knife is my favorite of these, I don't think you can deny the influence of Helter Skelter and Schizoid Man on the new metal genre. ------------- I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you? |

I would say Helter Skelter didn't have a direct influence on progressive metal. It had a more direct influence on hard rock and heavy metal. I would say 21st Century Schizoid Man had an influence on the two genres mentioned above, as well as prog metal. -Jeff -------------

| I think Helter Skelter must have had the most influence on Metal simply because everybody knows The Beatles and not everybody knows KC, PF's More and Genesis's Trespass (not sure how popular trespass really was actually). The question which was the most influential on prog metal is much more difficult... I think Helter Skelter would also be it here, but I am not sure about it at all, as many prog metal bands also are influenced by PF, Genesis and KC. No vote for now, maybe I'll vote when I have thought about it for a while. |

What about the who's "generation" ? cream's "sunshine of your love" ? Hendrix' 'Purple haze' ? Iron Butterfly's "evil temptation" ? the kinks' "louie louie" ? the troggs' "wild thing" ? All these songs pre-date the ones you listed and probably influenced hard-rock bands to come as well as the bands you listed for their "hard rock" songs. ------------- "Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood) |

I wouldn't really include the Knife along with the other ones, though it is great. It's just not as heavy or chaotic as the others, but it does have the right energy.
In any event, 21st Schizoid Man is my vote. -------------

King Crimson's easily. I would have also included Rush; they had quite an influence on prog metal.

On this list, Helter Skelter is at the very foundation - even 21st Century Schizoid Man follows it. There lie many years between the songs mentioned and the progressive metal as we know it, from let's say 1990 and later. I don't think that The Knife has anything to do with metal; 21st Century Schizoid Man just a bit. My vote goes to Helter Skelter, which may be regarded as an early example of hard rock.
Maybe Summertime Blues (Blue Cheer), Born to Be Wild (Steppenwolf) and In a Gadda-da-vida (Iron Butterfly) should be added to this list. -------------

The Beatles - ok, possibly they have some connections (very far) with object of discussion, but I don't think they were important at all. |

No votes for The Knife? Fine, I'll be first. I'm glad someone recognized Genesis' epicness to be on pair with heavy metal zeitgeist a decade later. (Seriously, listening, for example, Nursery Cryme is no too far-fetched from the best Iron Maiden's moments).

I think Genesis invented heavy/power metal in the heavy sections of the Musical Box and Dancing with the Moonlit Night. it is he same horse riding riff which can be heard in over 90 percent of power metal and in all Iron Madien songs.
also the heavy parts in In Held Twas an I ther are some dicsonant guiatar parts -------------

Twenty first from this list. But I must to admit that your selection of choices is too narrow. I lack for Black Sabbath (eponymous), Led Zeppelin (e.g. Immigrant Song) and above mentioned Steppenwolf or Iron Butterfly.
