I AM VERY SURPRISED ABOUT A FACT: WHY DEEP PURPLE'S AMAZING LIVE "MADE IN JAPAN" IS NOT ON TOP LIVE ALBUMS?

I THINK THIS IS THE MOST ESSENTIAL LIVE PERFORMANCE OF A PROG BAND EVER?OR?

I DON'T THINK IT WOULD BEAT OUT PINK FLOYD LIVE AT POMPEII, THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS AND BOTH ARE 1ST AND 2ND.

YOU MY FRIEND ARE LOOKING AT THE DVDS. HE IS TALKING ABOUT AN ALBUM. ALBUMS DO NOT HAVE VIDEO.

ALTHOUGH SPEAKING OF PINK FLOYD, I AM SURPRISED WE HAVE ECHOES STREAMING. SOMEHOW I DO NOT THINK ROGER WATERS GAVE US PERMISSION FOR THAT.

BUT TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION OP, I THINK IT IS BECAUSE THEY ARE PROTO-PROG AND PROTO-PROG AND PROG-RELATED ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOP LISTS.

HUH, I NEVER KNEW THAT ABOUT PROTO-PROG. /YELLING

I thought it was weird that so many PF songs were just uploaded. Dog, Echoes, and Shine on..? That is a lot of good Floyd here on PA.

WEIRD ALBUMS DON'T HAVE VIDEO? I'VE BEEN DOING IT WRONG ALL THIS TIME.

On topic: LIVE ALBUMS ARE COOL. MY FAVORITE LIVE ALBUM IS EITHER THE NIGHT WATCH BY KING CRIMSON OR PLAYING THE FOOL BY GENTLE GIANT. BOTH GREAT LIVE ALBUMS, YOU SHOULD ALL FIVE STAR THEM LIKE THIS StarStarStarStarStar AND GET THEM TO THE TOP OF THE LIVE ALBUM CHARTS.

MADE IN JAPAN IS A FANTASTIC LIVE ALBUM BUT SONG LENGTHS ASIDE IT'S NOT PARTICULARLY PROG

Pheww  I agree with Textbook  I love the album but always thought it was rock rather than prog
]-#[.may be wrong)  I often though  wonder   could Deep Purple have pushed themselves a bit and made a great prog album?   Just a thought.     Shoot me down in flames if you like but I dont think the prog lends itself too much to live albums. I usually prefer the studio versions.LIke listening to how they stretch live its just the actual recording depth sometimes doesnt match the studio    gawd    spot the anorak   hood up slouches off.

Hi,

Deep Purple never was "prog" ... if anything it was "loud" ... in fact, I walked out ...

It was a band that made a name on excesses and loudness and while there was a couple of songs here and there that were nice, it was never prog. It was more about the excess and making sure that people could notice they were there ...

For all intents and purposes, this was "rock'n'roll" ,.. and nothing else.

Listen to some live Magma albums if you don't think prog is made to be played live.

Made in Japan is a great live album and deserves the credit due. I personally think Purple should have put more creativity into their set list as it hardly ever changed. Purple were in N.Y for 3 nights and the same 2 guys in the front row every night were screaming for them to change the set.LOL  Then all the various bootleg recordings I heard over the years seemed to contain the same order of songs. I always wanted to hear 'Pictures of Home" live from the Japan tour.

I THINK DEEP PURPLE COULD HAVE DONE SOME NICE PROG ALBUMS!

well and itīs a shame they didnīt play child in time live in 2006 here in germany (although gillanīs voice was the reason).

AND ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS BESIDES MADE IN JAPAN IS METALLICAīS SYMPHONY AND METALLICA ALBUM ( WICH IS ALSO AVAILABLE AS DVD Big smile )

They were close to being progressive in other aspects such as their training and background. Ian Gillian was chosen for the vocal parts on Jesus Christ Superstar. He had a background in opera vocal techniques which is relevant on the album. Ritchie Blackmore studied classical guitar for a while in his youth. Jon Lord is a classical pianist and has performed with David Bedford on the Odyssey tour. Roger Glover released an album in the late 70's titled "Elements". The album itself is in league with any Passport or Soft Machine record. Ian Paice was more of a jazz drummer. If you view the black and white film from Belgium in 70', you'll see during his solo that his playing ranks amongst some of the best european/jazz/fusion drummers of our time. The progressive edge in Purple's music, in detailed aspect, turns up in sections of 'Space Truckin' performed live where Blackmore and Lord would play harmony with thirty second notes. This, plus the jazz drum fills in some of their rock songs were an indication that you were listening to schooled musicians and not typical stadium rockers. But I don't believe their intentions were to sit down and write a prog piece. That wasn't their mind set, to say the least.

A good live album but so much excess...not as succinct as Live at Leeds or Get Your Ya Ya's Out
