Subject: Your favourite Monty Python sketch !

Celebrating 40 years since their first TV show Monty Python's Flying Circus still remains very influential and topical, it was well documented that Genesis, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd invested in the Holy Grail movie which was a huge success.
The Ministry of Silly Walks and Fish slapping sketches never fail to roll me up, what s your favourite Python sketch?

The fish slapping dance is an absolute classic, but as far as trying to pick a favorite... their first ever sketch in the first ever show (I believe ) - flying sheep:
"Notice how they do not so much fly... as plummet"

a personal favorite is the bicycle race with famous painters-- "It's Braque. Georges Braque, the Cubist, painting a
bird in flight over a cornfield and going very fast down the hill
towards Kingston and...Piet
Mondrian - just behind, Piet Mondrian the Neo-Plasticist, a
gap, then the main bunch, here they come, Chagall, Max Ernst, Miro,
Dufy, Ben Nicholson, Jackson Pollock and Bernard Buffet making a break
on the outside here..!"
also the Mouse Problem, and the one when the horrible guests come over.. really too many to count

A few years ago i had the chance to see the original episodes for the first time (some 45 i believe, between 1969 and 1973, someone please correct me if im wrong),
I must admit i found it more silly than funny with few real laughs( i am more a fan of "The Goodies").Having said that i have always liked the "Oscar Wilde" sketch.
"Your Majesty is like a stream of bats P^^ss"
WHAT!!!!!????
"It was one of Wilde's!!"
"IT SODDING WAS NOT!!!"
loved "Holy Grail" too

After the brilliance of the first three seasons the first two episodes of the fourth were embarrassingly unfunny. I haven't watched it further yet, it was so bad. Does it get better?

I have to nominate the genius of the Argument sketch -
"This isn't an argument, it's just contradiction"
"No it isn't"
and the Hungarian phrase book sketch ("my hovercraft is full of eels").

I always enjoy the sketch of the mice's orgy. The "sub rosa" in it is devastating.

Yes!! That whole episode was particularly brillant. (Ditto for Royal Episode 13)
Also like the Mr. hilter sketch, the cycling tour, the golden age of ballooning, chemist sketch, buy a bed sketch, ministry of silly walks, the cheese shop...etc

40 years now? Holy cow!
Figures that my best of Python TV series DVDs were amongst the soaked. I may have to wipe them off and bring them back to the apartment for I am in need of some cheering up indeed.
There was so much good quality stuff in the original TV series it's really hard to pick one. One of the great things about many of their bits are that you can watch them today and even though some are obviously dated now, much of it is not. I think the closest thing in US TV comedy that's somewhat contemporary to Python is Laugh In and I caught a re run of it a few years ago and it was awfully dated.
The first one that came to mind for me was this one:

Also, how about some love for the twisted talents of Mr. Terry Gilliam?
(On a total side note, Brazil is one of my favorite movies ever )
On a related note I picked up the At Last The 1948 Show DVD set today.

Edit: I just found out this wasn't Monty Python, but John Cleeses How To Irritate People which was made a year before Monty Python was established. Oh well. Still really glad I found it. There are countless Flying Circus sketches that I love as well

Gannet ripple? What flavour is it?
It's f***ing seabird flavour, innit?
Oh and the army PTI teaching the platoon how to defend themselves against fresh fruit:
"You won't think it's funny when you come up against a homicidal maniac with a bunch of loganberries"
and yes, there's just too much to choose from.

I actually prefer the Barber sketch that preceeds the lumberjack song.
I've been watching so much Python lately. Just remembered the Self Defense Against Fruit sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piWCBOsJr-w - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piWCBOsJr-w
I'm trying to remember the name of the story with the princess with wooden teeth, her father who sang and played the Hammond organ, and the prince who got to marry her after running a simple errand. "What? Now??"
Anyone know what I'm referring to and what it's called? I'm dying to watch it.

Yeah I do. I remember seeing it on TV and it's definitely on one of the LPs they released in the 1970s It was some sort of kiddies fairytale parody title, most of it read by Eric Idle as i remember, maybe simply called "Storytime"
The simple errand went like this: Prince begs to kill dragton but was ordered to "Go dowm the fag shop and get me 20 Rothmans" Unfortunately he got hit by a bus on the way back so all was in vain.
The same sketch featured the tale of Ricky Ticky the Magic Pixie who lived in Dingly Dell under the shade of the woolly dumdum tree where he... sold contraceptives. CUT!!!
Oh what fun we had quoting this sort of stuff at school the morning after

^I looked that up some time when I remembered seeing (and loving) it on one of the Monty Python's Personal Best dvd's but finding out it wasn't included in the Flying Circus series. I think it was only done for some German special episode or something, please correct me The king with the organ is hilarious.

Ah.. that probably explains why it wasn't in the box set - their first album was on BBC records, the rest were on Charisma - the box set would be of the Charisma albums only
