For guys with girlfiends/spouses (ex-girlfriends or wives o.k.):
Does your companion share the same interests in progressive music as yourself?

For you single fellas (that have been so for quite some time):
Go out and find one and then come back and participate.

And for the ladies:
Tells us what you find appealing about prog and any bands you enjoy.

"Thinks "Progressive" is in reference to a soup"lol expect to get flamed for that.I can only go based on my ex and that's she liked bands from it but probably didn't even know there was a genre called prog rock.

I'm a number 2 - Although I already have a possible lined up who listens to The Mars Volta, Blackfield and Radiohead.

I voted for "Only likes certain bands of the genre"

She's a big fan. We always go to prog concerts together and she's bought most of our obscure Italian prog for example. I just got her some Zappa and Devil Doll for birthday along with PJ Harvey and Alice in Chains, so it's not just prog that we share, we like all the same music with tiny exceptions like 80s pop which she largely ignores.

My ex's favorite band is Porcupine Tree, but that was as close to prog as she got. She also liked some Sigur Ros and melodic Opeth.

Liked certain bands, but she (my ex) was a bit of a poser and probably just liked what I and my friends liked.

My wife has no special liking or disliking for prog. She usually likes Over the Rhine or some worship music, but now and then I can put on some Pink Floyd or Yes in her presence.
I think she can hardly tell prog from non-prog because she has less with music than I have.

Well my wife enjoys an act like Porcupine Tree but curiously enough I can´t get her to appreciate Dødheimsgard: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2539 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2539 Wink. So I voted number 2.

I did not know if I'm aloud to vote but after I saw that exs count I voted for option 2.
She loves PF, can hear Peter Hamill, Comus, KC (but not for long) but hates Renaissance.
Nah, It wasn't the music.

My wife gets the hang of Neal Morse, whose voice is, according to her, similar to her favorite singer Jon Bon Jovi. Dead
Yesterday she came to the CD shelf and took Phideaux's Doomsday Afternoon to play in the car. I guess she got that one too.

My gf likes mostly crossover, dredg, The Dear Hunter, 3..She also enjoys Sigur Ros's latest album as well. That's pretty much it though, I think.

My lady's fussy about music in general these days. She's grown out of most of the indie/alt bands she loved as a teenager and hasn't found much to pique her interest since. She's caught the Cardiacs bug almost as much as I have, mind you.

Interesting. I can't imagine how enjoyable it would be to have a girlfriend or wife that's interested in Univers Zero. It is to my understanding (and for many years), that Europe is populated with guys and girls who take progressive rock seriously. This is the old as hat analogy about the difference in cultures with European countries and the U.S.A. But since I've never been to Europe, I naturally feel drawn to an environment where it's possible to meet a girl who puts on a Univers Zero cd after lunch.

My wife and I have always shared the same passion towards music and we have a similar taste in music and we love the same bands/musicians and she loves many of the bands I play and/or introduce to her and vice versa (rock, metal, classical, jazz, electronic, avantgarde etc.).
We go to shows together (went to Porcupine Tree, Time of Orchids, Renaissance, Van Der Graaf...).

I consider it a special thing that my girlfriend enjoys some of the same music as me. Not that she'll listen to King Crimson or Gentle Giant or Meshuggah, but she likes The Beatles, some Porcupine Tree, and most Peter Gabriel, to name a few.

Now if only she could get into Death's Symbolic with me, then we'd really be in business Tongue

You got it.  Generally though, if I tell girls what kind of music I listen to and say that I absolutely dislike rap, country, pop, etc. they get upset. Tongue  It's even worse if I play them some.

Just goes to show that you shouldn't reject a girl 'cause she's not a prog head (especially if she's hot!!). So here's some pointers for 'ya fellas out there.

1. Agree that her favorite gerne of music (hip-hop, country, ragtime) is also your favorite (even if it's true). This gets your foot (among other things) in the door.

2. While you're gettin' down to buisness with her, slip on a copy of "Dark Side Of The Moon" on the CD changer. That'll add to the mood (trust me on that one).

3. After dating her for some time go ahead and spin some Dream Theater or Mars Volta when you're both just cruisin' down the countryside.

4. Next take her to your flat and play Guitar Hero or Rock Band using selections from renown prog rockers.

5. Follow step 2. After which her response should be along the lines of  "Gee dear, who's that your always playing eveytime we're making out?" She'll take a liking to Floyd becoming her first favorite prog band.

6. If you play your cards right overtime she'll disown her original taste in music and start listening to Floyd or Rush on her own terms (making her into a convert).

7. CONGRATS! Not only do you have a hot girl who's so sexy but also enjoys prog almost as much as your horny self.

I did allmost exactly what you suggested here (exept it was Wish you were here).

It is still her favorite album and PF is her favorite band.

It is just me not part of it anymore.

Now, do I have the patience to go all over it again ?

Here in Guatemala, I still don't met a girl who likes -or at least know- about prog metal... So is hard to say... my girl -still is not formally- she said she wants to here what I like... that she really wants to support me on that... she likes "Hollow Years" and "Through her Eyes" but get a little scared when I show her Six Degrees... jejeje... she is not made for metal... but a least didn't ask to skip the heavy songs... So... I suggest the Falling into Infinity... and seems that she start to have the idea... jejeje... what we need is patience...!!!

So everytime you want to listen to your favourite Floyd records you get districted by your girlfriend who's in the mood? Whaha

I never listen to prog during the act, I get distracted...
Stupid me..

Oh, I don't reject them, as I really don't have a problem listening to other styles of music (I won't necessarily enjoy everything but I can deal with it).  Musical taste is something that can be worked on over time.  Believe it or not, though, I've met a girl here at college who's heard of bands like Echolyn and another one who loves King Crimson. Shocked  So not all hope is lost to get a girl who likes prog. Tongue

Whenever my wife happens to walk in when I'm listening to prog, almost universally I get "What is THIS???" Three minutes is about the max on really mellow stuff.

There are a very few albums she tolerates, like Harmonium's 5 seasons. At the same time, she hates the Decemberists. What's a guy to do?

My girlfriend loves DT and other prog-metal bands, as well as metal bands like Amorphis. She has gone with me to three concerts (Iron Maiden, DT, Metallica). She even likes some extreme metal. She also enjoys Muse and bands like it. On the other side, she absolutely couldn't stand Frank Zappa, something she also shares with me. She didn't like Amon Duul II either, again, compatibility is almost perfect.

This is one hell of a b*****ding process. :P I might just be fine with making out to some goddamn R&B or even... Reggae... ugh... but for reggae she'd have to be DAMN fine.

I don't think I could make out to Pink Floyd. I'd be torn between making out and furrowing my brow and stroking my chin. That might freak her out a bit. :P
