I would say that Portnoy and Petrucci are equally important! So I'll refrain from voting this time.

Petrucci, anyway my favorite member is Rudess

In my opinion...you cant really choose. Without any of them there would
be no Dream Theater...I think they're all equally important.
With that said...
Portnoy - Only Neil Peart can out-drum that man.

Petrucci for DT, Portnoy for the advancement of Prog Rock/ Metal. How's that for compromise?

Being a guitarist I have to vote for Petrucci, yet it was a very hard decision, as without the over the top keyboarding of Jordan (harmony solos/ doubling/hyperspeed solos) right alongside of John, Dream Theater just wouldn't have that distinct sound of theirs...

If they jetisoned James LaBrie, I might begin to like 'em.

Neil Peart.

John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy are now the most important writers in the band, ever since Mr. Kevin "Genius" Moore left the band, but since I like Guitarists a bit I pick Mr. John Petrucci.

all I know is It's NOT LaBrie

So, Tony R, it's Peart who is responsible for all that machine-like drumming, predictable breaks and bad soloing?

Personnaly I think of John Petrucci, the most technical musician of the band with the drummer...surely not James la Brie, he sings wrong and the sound of his voice is really undesirable

And I voted for John Myung - criminally underrated and unnoticed. IMO he is the most talented and effcient of the quintet.

Phillippe, actually, DT has a lot of emotions and soul in their music. If a song like Learning to Live or Trial of Tears does not have soul, then I guess I should eat some dog sh*t.

Mike Portnoy!
A close second is John Petrucci.
A poll should be created for the least important - JAMES LEBRIE by a mile.

It's too bad that Kevin Moore wasn't included. Would have liked
to have a chance to vote for him (I love Chroma Key and OSI).

Rudess is the least important, they can replace him as easily as moore or sherinian were.
I like labrie, but Geoff Tate should replace him

I don't agree, since Rudess is in DT the band is better; his high level stimulates Petrucci to give his best.

I'll go with Petrucci. Mike is also VERY important, of course, but I can imagine(hardly) DT with a different drummer, but without Petrucci's guitar work DT would be dead... And the lyrics... Petrucci is the best poet of 'em all, IMO.

Mike Portnoy practically carries the band both while playing and while
not playing. However, if we were talking simply by means of having to
find a replacement, John Myung would be the hardest to replace.

Musically, i think John Petrucci has the biggest influence, but i don't
think the band would function without either Portnoy or Myung, so i
think it's difficult to judge. The only two they could work without are
Rudess and LaBrie.

Definitely, Mr. Portnoy. Although, John Petrucci is also an important corner stone for the band, just another guitar virtuoso I say.

I voted for Petrucci.... Just love'em... The next would be "The Portnoy machine". And then next Kevin... Why isnt he included? Damn Awake and Imiges and Words are outstanding albums... When dream and day unite would also be great if they remastered it and gave LaBrie the chance to sing it... Kevin come back!!!! (for the 100th time!!!)

If either Petrucci or Portnoy leave DT, it wouldn't be DT anymore, but if myung does so... I think they would handle it and get a new bassist (I didn't say it would be easy)... If jordan leaves... well.. he is a keyboard genius, but DT was good before he entered... and well... I think james is also important because he has the voice we've always associated with DT..
Anyway, I think it's a tie between JP nad MP... but if I have to choose one... I'll go with mike coz he is cooler than john

Rudess. Buy the 4NYC album. NOW!
------------- Keyboardist-bassist.
Rick Wakeman>Emerson (Though they both kick it)

They're all important. Okay, just Petrucci, Portnoy, LaBrie and Myung. They've had 3 different keyboardists so far, and they've carried on fine, IMHO.

I don't even know why Myung is considered a member. Rudess did the notable stuff.

John Myung. (judging from this poll) he's really underated. He's one of the best bass players I've heard, fast and groovy. DT would most definitly not be the same without him.

I CAN HARDLY IMAGINE DT WITHOUT PETRUCCI BUT WITHOUT PORTNOY I CAN´T IMAGINE THEM AT ALL.
IF I COULD I WOULD VOTE FOR MOOR. HE GAVE SOME GREAT IDEAS AND I THINK THAT SOME OF THEIR POST MOOR ALBUMS WOULD SOUND EVEN BETER WITH HIM.

Petrucci
probably one of the best guitarists in the world now(at least in his
generation) without his great play DT wouldn`t be the same. Then John
Myung he`s quiet and underrated as the band player but this guy has
really big talent.
Portnoy is a big show-off

he is a showoff but hes allowed to be, hes f ucking incredible
he also contributes so much to the band, there would be no Glass Prison, Dying soul, Root of all evil, the mirror, war inside my head.... ETC. in fact, there would be no dt with out mike
