Are there any other fans of the seminal Cleveland no-wave art rockers on these forums? Though they couldn't be described as prog, there is a prog connection because Chris Cutler (ex Henry Cow) was a member for a while, and some of David Thomas' solo albums feature Cutler, John Greaves, Lindsay Cooper and Richard Thompson (among many other fine musicians). BTW, despite what the critics say Pere Ubu was never a punk band, although in their early days they did attract a bit of a punk audience (in the UK at any rate). I like what I've heard...quirky and minimalist, and pleasantly pretentious. Some songs (like "Non-Alignment Pact" for instance) are pretty darn punk, to my ears...a definite early punk/reggae influence, like the Clash and Gang of Four, et cetera. I love Pere Ubu especially the Dub Housing and Modern Dance albums.I saw David Thomas at The South Bank.What a line-up his band was.Chris Cutler on drums,Peter Hammill on keyboards and guitar and Linda Thompson on vocals. David Thomas's band prior to Pere Ubu,Rocket From the Tombs,are well worth checking out. -------------

Presumably that was the Pale Orchestra Mirror Man gig - I'd love to have seen that one, the album is excellent. My favourite Ubu/Thomas album is The Sound Of The Sand, though all the 5 solo albums in the 'Monster' box set are splendid.
