This poll is for the full length movies and not the TV show (you're welcome to comment on the TV series if you were a fan).
I enjoyed the original movies with Kirk and Spock because of the TV series. Cinematography and special effects had advanced considerably and it was good to see the original story remade for the big screen.
I was slow to catch on to TNG like I was slow to catch on to the TV show Mash after likng the movie so much. But Picard, Data and the rest of the crew started to grow on me. Add the good scripts and story lines and before you know it, I was a fan.
So my vote goes to The Next Generation.

Patrick Stewart. Great actor.

I liked him in all the X-Men movies as well.
I can vaguely remember seeing him in a movie where his character was a retired spy (I think) and he was starting to lose his memory. By the middle of the movie he had dozens of Post-It notes all over the wall with things he didn't want to forget. I saw it once years ago but I recall that I liked it.
I'll do some research.

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard - a man for all seasons and my favourite captain in Star Trek!

Then you should have it deleted, start over and re-write those choices, because that's not how people will see it.

I've only watched the original series (and the related movies). But I don't see how this Picard guy could be more awesome than Kirk.

I agree with Vompatti. I'm a total trek geek, granted, and I like all involved...but Picard never brought tears to my eyes the way the dialog between Kirk and Spock did in Wrath Of Kahn.

I liked the original movies with Kirk because I liked the TV series and it was good to see the original cast back together for the big screen. I was skeptical about TNG at first but like I mentioned, it did grow on you. So much so that I voted for it in this poll.
The Patrick Stewart movie about the retired agent with early alzheimers is called "Safe House" released in 1997. If you can find it at your video store you should check it out.
I don't know why this slipped my mind yesterday but I really liked Stewart's role in "Conspiracy Theory".

This is tough. But pitting the best of TNK against the best of OS (and the worse against the worse) I'd have to give it to TNK.

I can neither vote in this poll, nor even write in it. It would not be fair.

I've really got to collect more Star Trek, I only have the original series. I like watching it whenever it's on on the "Syfy" channel.

If I wore a red shirt I really would not have liked Kirk. Seemed like a lot less security personnel got killed off under Picard.

Ah, but Dean, didn't you just LURVE the way we all watched him develop into a man and, latterly, a super human entity?

Now there's a character I loved to hate. Will Wheaton is actually quite a liberal and is currently running a blog and has a family, which just seems so weird to me. http://www.wilwheaton.net/ - http://www.wilwheaton.net/
Wesley Crusher, all grown up with a family, whaaa?

When I was young I used to watch the Kirk/Spck gang quite a lot and it was good at the time.
Lately though I saw a few episodes again and was horrified at the cheesy ham acting. I can live with the cheap effects of the time and a lot of stuff that goes together with those episodes being so old, but the acting is just plain awful. Just can't excuse that.
Picard and crew are quite good though.

when TOS was good it was the best thing on TV, Next Gen was a first rate show but it was too polished, I love the character of the old series ..as for the films they're about even I guess, they always seemed to hit-and-miss, every other one a winner
anyway, Kirk

I have to agree with npjnpj about some of the cheesy acting (and aliens that look like they're from a low-budget 1950s type B movie) but the original series was in the early sixties when TV special effects were still low level. We didn't know any better at the time and accepted it as it was.
I recall reading that Battlestar Galactica didn't last too long because the special effects were too expensive for a television series.

Excuse me excuse me. At the risk of showing my age, the original Star Trek ran in the late '60's. No denying it often had that '50's B movie air about it though. I was on board for the original Battlestar series at it's beginning, but it was turned into a kiddie thing. The new BG is pretty well done.

Oh, no, once I read in an old MAD magazine that there was a fan that had his retinas burnt after following a 97-hour debate Kirk vs Picard on internet. I hope it doesn´t repeat here.

From what I've read, in 1960 Roddenberry started pitching a science fiction series for TV. The pilot was 1965 and the original series started in 1966.
In making my decision, just to be fair, I tried not to throw Kirk and Picard up against each other without their crews. So I thought about Kirk and Crew versus Picard and Crew. Then I considered that the captain is the supreme being on board ship. So, it really does break down to Kirk vs Picard.

Voting currently 2:1 for TNG! Guess I never saw enough of JLP and his crew to appreciate them, but having grown up with James T, Mr Spock, Bones and Scotty I feel honour bound to give Star Trek my vote.

First Contact rules !!! Picard so hates those b*****d Borgs. More than Kirk ever hated Khan. But the best single Trek movie moment will always be Kirk yelling KHAAAAN !!!

Talking about the movies or series, my vote is for Capt. Jean Luc Picard.
Patrick Stewart is a serious actor that makes anything easy to believe, Shatner is a good enterteiner but not in the same level.
I also remember his fantastic peformance in Excalibur as Guiniveer's father.
