Since I don't want to hog up the soccer, er football thread with this. Notice I put no current backs since, well you never know how a career will shake out. Sorry if I left out any greats, but I made this up off the top of my head and just went with some greats I could think of. In my opinion the greatest RB ever was Sanders. 15,000 yards in 10 years (While Payton played 13, and Smith 15) He did this on a terrible team while Payton and ESPECIALLY Smith were on good teams with good O-lines Ran for 2000 yards in 14 games (only other to do so was OJ) And he did all this on a terrible team. I heard he has the record for most yards lost....yet he still put up such great numbers. And of course he retired in his prime. 3 more years and I think he would have the rushing record. Close 2nd and 3rd are Jim Brown and Walter Payton |

Jim Brown was clearly the greatest RB of all time
keep in mind that his pro career only lasted 9 seasons, 4 of which he only played a 12 game schedule and 5 of which he only played a 14 game schedule:
Rushing Yards: 12312 (still 8th on the all-time list despite having at least 500 fewer carries than everyone else in the top ten and a full 2050 fewer than all-time leader Emmitt Smith)
Rushing Average: 5.2 Y/A (the only starting RBs ahead of him on this list are Bo Jackson and Spec Saunders. Jackson had 1844 fewer attempts and Saunders had 1819 fewer attempts.)
Rushing TDs: 106 in only 118 games (that's still 5th all-time)
Rushing Yards per Game: 104.3 (still 1st all-time and by nearly 5 yards over Barry Sanders) -------------  Time always wins. |

Ah, all good points and I'm not going to go into the whole size and speed of athletes when comparing the 60's to 90's as I like to believe the players would have been just as good with the same diet and excorsize programs., but consider this....
Barry ran for 1500 yards + nearly every year on some really bad Lion teams. He is what made them competitive. The lions would have 4-6 wins/season if it wasn't for him. Instead they were a threat to make the playoffs every year when he was in the backfield.
Take it from someone who lives in the midwest and saw many NFC north games in his life. Barry ran behind awful offensive lines while Jim Brown played for some pretty good Cleveland Brown Teams.
Both quit while they were in the prime and both would have dominated the league(barring injury of course) for years to come, but Barry was a little better IMO.
With that said....Curtis Martin

No doubt, Brown is a CLOSE #2. Although all your points are taken directly from Wikipedia The fact he ran for 1500 yards in 12 games, and 1800 and 14 is truly amazing. But like I said what gives Barry the edge is that he was on a terrible team and did all that. (And for the record I DID NOT watch Barry play....didn't really get into football around '04 and I was too young anyway...) So I am not biased towards him. I already made my points for Barry in the OP but like I said...he played on a terrible team. Put Sanders and the Bears or Cowboys and who knows what numbers he would've put up. Jim Brown is a close second, then Walter Payton. And IMO Eric Dickerson and Earl Campbell round out the top 5 |
