Of which prog or related bands do you have all studio albums restricted to those that have made at least 5 studio albums ? Tough question, I know and I will have to start digging myself too. For the moment I know this of:

Porcupine Tree
Dream Theater
Flower Kings
Pendragon
Enchant
Everon
Jadis
Ayreon
Arena
Symphony X
Pain of Salvation
Steely Dan
Shadow Gallery

Must be just about it with these. What is your list ?

Magma, that's about it really.  I'm close to the full King Crimson disco, but I don't have Three of a Perfect Pair or Beat, and I'm waiting until the 40th anniversary editions are released to finish it off.  Otherwise, I just have scattered albums by random bands here and there. I've got enough Zappa to equal a complete discography of a normal band, but nowhere near his entire studio recordings. I have the entire Dun discography and Koenjihyakkei, but they're both under 5, same with most of the bands I have every studio release from.

I have all of the above except for Pendragon, Everon, Jadis, Arena, and Steely Dan.  Others that I know that I have and can easily think of are Yes, Rush, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Tiles, Spock's Beard, Metallica, Queensryche, Led Zeppelin, Earthworks, Chicago, Journey, The Moody Blues, Marillion, Pallas, Queen, Kansas, Styx, IQ, Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Galactic Cowboys, King's X, Phish, Umphrey's McGee, Primus, The Mars Volta, Neal Morse (although I don't have the extremely religious releases) and Radiohead.

There are probably others and as I think of them I will update this post.  I tend to be a full discography kind of guy, which unfortunately is quite expensive.

So am i! I want full discographys Tongue

Of bands with at least 5 albums, I'm not sure I own any entire discographies.

What is the criteria for an entire discography?  Some bands such as King Crimson and Dream Theater have an endless amount of fan club releases.

Posted By: Abstrakt

I guess he means every Studio album and every "Regular"Live album.

Posted By: rushfan4

The original poster seems to have defined complete discographies as studio albums.  I would assume this would not include fan club releases, etc... However, if not, then my complete discographies will be less since I have very few fan club releases.

I don't have Volume 4, Born Again, or Mob Rules.  I do have a compilation called Children of the Grave, however, which has all of the songs from Volume 4.  I'm not really sure why it is labelled differently.

I only have Harmonium and Radiohead's complete discographies.
In fact, most of the bands I appreciate (or even adore) have made some bad (in my opinion) albums that I don't want to buy at all (well, that's the case for Radiohead's Pablo Honey, but anyway).
I'd name a few of these bands: - Pink Floyd (that's the best exemple for me) I
own every Waters-era  and  every Barrett-era (including Relics) albums, but I really don't like Gilmour-era album even if I find Gilmour guitar works in Pink Floyd amazing.
                                                       -  VDGG. Most of their albums are good but I don't like their present stuff.
                                                       - Yes. From The Yes Album to Going for the One, they're one of my              favourite bands (Yes and Time and a Word are pretty good though) but I dislike everything they did after this album.
                                                      - Genesis. Gabriel-era is filled with wonderful albums, but except for Trick of the Tail, Collins-era is awful...

Okay, then.  Including all "regular" studio and live albums, I have the following discographies (minimum 5 albums, excluding compilation albums):

Tool

Short enough list??? LOL

The thing is, I usually don't like a band's entire discography if they made more than 5 albums (with some exceptions).  If I buy an album and don't like it, I'll get rid of it.  Leave some space for something I do enjoy.

based on those with five or more studio albums.... I can only think of these:

Magma (all the studios plus quite a number of other albums)
Robert Wyatt
Univers Zero
Present
Zao
Gentle Giant (should say I used to have all of the studio albums)

Heldon is almost complete....

Cool idea for a thread:

Genesis
Spock's Beard
The Flower Kings
Dream Theater
Sting
Stone Temple Pilots
Love and Rockets

I can't include Neal Morse in good faith (get it, it's a pun) as I've only purchased his prog CD's, not the poppier stuff.

On the bright side, in the process of researching my collection, I learned that there's a new Juno Reactor out (well, new as in last year).  Once I pick up that one (their seventh) then I'll be able to add them to my list.

Hmm...

Gentle Giant
King Crimson
VDGG
Secret Chiefs 3
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
PT
Earthworks
Univers Zero
Spock's Beard
Pain Of Salvation

I want to say I'm forgetting (at least) one...as I usually do with lists. I'll edit if need be.

Henry Cow
Led Zeppelin
Birth Control
Third Ear Band
Edgar Froese
United Jazz and Rock Ensemble

Good question.  It never occurred to me before and, since I generally stick to pre-1977 albums there are qoing to be few complete discographies.  Recent reformations have not helped.

Here is the list. A strange threesome.

Atomic Rooster

Van Halen (all the Dave Lee Roth era)

WOW ! is the only comment I have here and I'll say it again: WOW ! I mean that really is a lot !
And good taste too by the way Tongue
Thank you.  It is kind of an obsessive/compulsive thing with me I think.  And despite my user name I am not just a Rush fanboy.  I like to spread my fanboyism around.

I used to collect everything released by my favorite acts and that sometimes included picture discs, singles and EPs too but today I only purchase select albums and leave the stinky ones alone. My apartment don´t have room enough for more music. So everytime I purchase something new, one of my old albums will have to go to the basement.

One of the artists where I own just about everything ( we´re talking full-length albums) is Frank Zappa. I own most of his releases on both LP and CD. Even some of the most obscure ones. I used to be a crazy fanboy. I´ve spend a fortune on Zappa´s music. There are still a few titles the collector in me wants though ( I still haven´t found Uncle Meat on LP in a decent condition).

And yes Henk I also own the full TFK catalogueBig smile.

I own full ( almost) discographies of most of the classic progressive rock acts like Yes ( well I might have skipped a few of the new onesEmbarrassed), Gentle Giant, King Crimson ( I still haven´t found The Power and the Glory, but will eventually), Van Der Graaf Generator ( I haven´t got World Record yet. Can´t find it but will eventually), Genesis, ELP and Jethro Tull.

Anekdoten
Riverside
Atheist
Cynic
Death
Meshuggah
Pestilence
Dream Theater
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath

...and loads of other stuff.

Mostly every band/artist I've listened to prior to becoming more open-minded, and starting to check many new things, swedish-buffet-style.

Tangerine Dream & Klaus Schulze pop immediately, since they're my favourites, but even here I'll admit, I don't have every single compilation and soundtrack on CD, nor did I managed to listen to Schulze's boxsets by miracle.

I wasn't the first progger in the house, so as far as Jarre, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, Gabriel and the other big names were concerned, some were already fully collected by my father, while in other cases I merely helped complete the collection with apart-from-the-classic albums. I was, however, the new one to embrace bands like Van der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, Porcupine Tree, GYBE. I have all the abovementioned on CD. Meanwhile, my Rush, Yes, Marillion, Nektar, Focus, Zappa collection is, from this point of view, mixed (or "originally incomplete").

This similarly extends further to jazz(-rock) artists like Weather Report, Return To Forever, Mahavishnu, Corea, Jarrett, Garbarek.

Bottom line: I've got the full collectionist syndrome. If I'm to relate to Hugues' idea: yes, no artist is without weak (or stinky) works (VdGG almost pulled it Wink). But if that artist is from my "favourite tier", I wanna have it all.

  • (We Sold our Soul for rock n Roll) IF IT COUNTS
Most, if not all of them are pretty hard to find these days. At least at a decent price Cry

I don't have Volume 4, Born Again, or Mob Rules.  I do have a compilation called Children of the Grave, however, which has all of the songs from Volume 4.  I'm not really sure why it is labelled differently.

You WHAT!!!??? ShockedAngry
It's some weird album that was made so some weirdo could milk some extra money off Black Sabbath i guess Angry
The only difference is the cover and some added live track right?
Yes.  It is all the same songs in the same order with 1 added live track.  It it really kind of weird.  I guess that I've never come across a legitimate version of Volume 4.  I thought that I had a vinyl version of The Mob Rules, but I don't. I am pretty sure that I have heard it before.  I might have a cassette copy of a friend's copy or something like that.

Well go get yourself a copy of Vol4 now! The remaster is easy to find, at least here!
I think "Mob Rules" better than "Heaven and Hell" actually Tongue

You know, I didn't realize how few bands I have every album by.  Some of my favorite bands of all time (Yes, Genesis, ELP, even Gentle Giant) I've just never bothered to get everything.  In most cases, I've HEARD everything......which led me to not purchase everything LOL

But here is what I do have:

Flower Kings (including all side projects)
White Willow (oddly enough..........but there is only one album of theirs that I find weak, and it's still not bad)

I also have all Asgard, National Health, Citizen Cain, Versus X, The Tangent...............but you said at least 5 albums, so those don't count.

And that's it really.   (well, I do have every Scorpions album on vinyl from my younger days.......but I don't like to talk about that LOL )

Just curious, but do you really have all the Kaipa albums?  How is "Hander"?  I've heard that one was pretty bad.

Also, you have a few there with less than 5 studio albums to their name..........I thought we were restricting this to bands with at least 5 studio albums?

Yes i have more affinity with the prog rules list then yours. But even if i don't have all Hackett cd, i like very much his early stuff and i enjoyed listening to O. Tentacles, Vander, KC.

3 stars With the MkII line-up partly broken up (Moran, Ponty, the strings and brass are gone), McLaughlin kept the Walden-Armstrong rhythm section and set out to the Herouville Chateau studios and recorded in the summer of 75 what would be known as the last real Mahavishnu Orchestra, except if you count the 84 reformation. All of the missing musicians of the second line-up were not replaced except for Gayle Moran by organist Stu Goldberg, which for this writer is an improvement. With a bland artwork showing who's the master on board, this album is a difficult one, because it sounds least to the usual MO sound. Much maligned by partly undeservedly so, imho.

Indeed this album often glides between Santana, B Auger's Oblivion Express, Jeff Beck albums (Wired and BBB), which in itself is no flaw, but surprising. With the organ-dominated, but Carribean-beating All In The Family, Narada Walden is in full form, making this 100MPH track a very enthralling opening cut with unfortunately Mc playing the guitar synth, thus taking some of the bite of his sound, but not affecting his playing. Miles Out sounds like Beck's best torture of a string set on a neck, but Mc uses synths to enhance the cosmic sounds, before Armstrong introduces a riff, easing Narada's arrival and the quartet cruises from one galaxy to the other. While very expressive a track (especially during those days), this type of space rock sounds a bit dated, today. Narada sings the next tracks, In My Life and Gita, something that would give a very late 70's/early 80's Santana feel and on other tracks of this album, close to Auger's Oblivion Express. I certainly am not saying Walden's voice resembles Litgerwood's, but the tracks he sings on have that kind of feeling. In either case, all of the sting of the previous MO album are gone, and it is certainly not the short bagpipe tune played on dumb guitar synth (interestingly, Narada is on organ here) that would change things.

The flipside starts on the more convincing Way Of The Pilgrim, but Mc (sometimes) exaggerates with his technology frenzy, helped by Goldberg's mini-moog, but nevertheless, it's one of the album's better tracks. River of My Heart is to bunch with In My Life, where Narada proves that his ideas (this is the only non-Mc track) are not that easy to absorb on an MO album. The ultra funky Planetary Citizen, then the more reflective Lotus Feet, which is from far the proggiest track, loaded with mini-moog and (unfortunately) Mc's guitar synth, are giving a bit of substance to the album, before the two-part title track takes us again in outer space, sometimes taking Jeff Beck tonalities as in Freeway Jam. This ultra bizarre up-tempoed, partly improvised and completely crazy is not a bad outro for an MO exit.

Clearly not MO's best album, Inner World doesn't really deserves all 100% of the bad rap and rep it endures (but 50%, certainly ;o)), many MO fans are may be a little harsh on it, but had it comes with a better artwork (ala Emerald), I'm sure it would've better better with them.

You're the most prolific reviewer, of course.  Even if you don't physically own complete discographies, you managed to hear them. We don't all have a handy library resource like you do (or subscribe to Napster and the like) so owning the album (as much as one can own copyrighted material) is sometimes the way to hear them.  Like with GG, I might dispense with albums that didn't do it for me.  Many have theirs on big harddrives (and don't pay for all, any, or most of them), but just don't delete them even if they don't much care for them.

I wouldn't wish to part with any of my Magma, Univers Zero, Present, or Robert Wyatt albums.  I return to all of them.  I'm very big on Art Zoyd, but I don't plan to ever get or hear the complete discography.  I have many complete discographies, but mostly for bands with few albums.

One might pity some of those obsessive completists wallets (the ones who paid for all of 'em, including albums they didn't really like), but as time is money, I might pity PA's most prolific reviewer.  You've listened to such an amazing amount, I wonder what percentage has really made an impact on you and really got under your skin.  If I like something, I like to listen man times.  I'm not being serious about pitying you, we're all different, and I guess you really enjoy hearing lots of new albums and spending the time on reviewing them (sometimes you do it more on memory and I'm sure you've been into prog for a very long time).  Magma's Merci is not a well-liked album, but I'm really glad I got it and kept it.

Great list! Considering that Hammill himself has made more than 40 official albums.

I only have full discographies of Malicorne, Flairck and Van der Graaf Generator, and a lot of almost complete ones.

Hmmm...off the top of my head...

Spock's Beard
The Flower Kings
Neal Morse
Dream Theater
Gentle Giant
Ayreon
The Beatles

I have most of Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson, but don't have some of their '80s albums, so I can't include them. There are a lot more bands that I have their discographies, but they have less than 5 studio albums, so I didn't count them.

No offence meant here, so don't take it personally these are general stateme,nt that I strongly believe in. -

I'm not tryig to ridicule you here, but it's just that I find buying every album from someone a bit.... of a waste of time §let alone money, butthat not my concern) since there are litteraly  thousands of artistes worth checking out and awaiting your discovery.... So buying the weaker  Ayreon or latest Pendragon sound soooooo... redundant and counter-productive to me..... And it certainly doesn't show an open mindedness either, since you are limiting your horuzons to just one style of prog., which sonically speaking is one of the more limited (save eventually post rock)

as for Script...... I grew up with itEmbarrassed, but you'll probably find that I also liked BraveShocked..... so I don't systematically hate neo-progTongue..... it's just the sheer mass of group sounding the same, most of them having whining vocals and the same sonic universe......

Hopęfully my message went through

Wow, you're right, that review is not as ad as  remembered itShockedShocked. I promise you'll find worse if you go to CaravanTongueLOL (and I'm a fan)

As for being prolific, my buddy Zowie is a lot more prolific.... he'll probably over-take me in a few months time  >>> I hope anyway, cos I'm tired to be the guy "who has nothing better than to review everuything he listens to"
.

Well I'm the type of guy that keeps only the worthy stuff. the last thing I want is a huge collection filling shelves occupying an entire room..... sooo I trim whatever I buy..... cos I buy tons of stuff (and I have friends that are lernding lme as I lend them) that my library system doesn't have. I'd say that I ordered stuff without having an idea about what I might find on it.... sometimes ending up with crap >>let's say that there s plenty that gets under my skin, but in terms of percentage, there is more that irritates my skinLOL

It's true that my hunger for newer soundscape can makeme forget thaty some disc might be worth more listens, but in the long run, this gets done antway.... I hardly listen to the 70's classics cos I know them byheart. This gives me time to discover Sun Ra or Terry Riley

I don't deal with MP3 (not computer litterate enough to dowload.... and I need the physical object) eiter.

PS: A lot of my reviews (especially the ones in prog-related) are done from memory (I swung the Zep reviews in two hours, the doors eben less), BOC I onlu borrowed two albums (I haven't got any)..... so my time spent reviewing is probably less than you may think.

Metallica (except for the very last album, which I heard and didn't find interensting enough to buy, at least not yet).

I wonder if someone will show up saying he's got the whole Rick Wakeman discography? I would almost think that is an impossible task.

I have Porcupine Tree, rush, VDGG and Yes complete discographies, and I have a lot of Jethro Tull, bbut I'm not willing to buy some of their 80's stuff, all I have from the 80s is Crest of a Knave.

BTW, the MO I don't own is Inner World, because it's not good.

Hugues, but you've still listened to and reviewed Inner Worlds, and you gave it a three.  Three is good in my book, and by the ratings guide.  Guess your opinion changed, or you mean bad for MO, but still good overall (when compared to most albums)

..............................................................................................

Understood.  I actually do agree with your sentiments, and am usually looking to discover new music myself (though I'm not as voracious as I was a few years ago for new music, but still I'm regularly discovering new music).  It's a journey, and I like to take different directions and explore lots of different music.  It would be nice if more people would move out from their comfort zones and discover music such as Terry Riley and Sun Ra.

It would've been interesting if this topic had been about how many complete studio album discographies has one heard as well.  I could even count Rush then due to a friend.

I figured you'd be a pretty speedy reviewer.  I'm sure I've spent much more time on devising silly topics, or writing inane posts, at this site than you've spent on a great many reviews.  I wish I would write reviews, but I don't really "feel them", or get into the zone when I'm writing them so it always feels like a chore.  I respect the more prolific reviewers prowess.  I had thought Zowie Ziggy might have overtaken you already until I lokked as I knew you'd slowed down.  I think "Mandy etc." might have written the largest number of reviews.

Khan?  That's cheating isn't it? LOL  It was supposed to be a minimum of 5 studio albums, so I'll cheat a little, too.

OK, rack me up for Khan.
Prog or not:
Tori Amos
Djam Karet
Explosions In The Sky
Frech Frith Kaiser Thompson
Peter Gabriel
Gentle Giant
Gongzilla
Happy The Man
The High Llamas
King Crimson
Led Zeppelin
Sarah McLachlan
The Muffins
The Nice
NIN
Nirvana
Phideaux
Porcupine Tree
Primus
Radiohead
The Reasoning
Roxy Music
Stereolab
Sting
Talking Heads
Steve Tibbetts
UK
Various Artists (kidding) Tongue
Robert Wyatt
XTC

Some artists just have either too big of a studio discography, or stuff that's just not worth having.  Others I am still working on.

Hah, kudos to you Slarti for having the complete Sting discography as well.  In the process of researching my earlier answer to this question, I learned that Sting's coming out with a new CD later this year.  It will be the first non-prog CD that I've bought in a year or two.

That's my main complaint about this type of thread.

I could even rename it as to "how narrow minded can you be " by concentrating all of your effots one genre or a few artiste..... but I won't since I promised atruce.

As for review writing..... ZZ observed a long break after reaching 2112 (i took less than a week), but I figure next spring....

Put it this way.... during the week, in North Holland, I listen to music from 6 or 7 PM until midnight (i don't have TV and no wek access at home) , this between four and five times a week >>> soo you can imagine that I have time to write reviews.

my Brussels WE, I forget reviewing even though I still listyen to much music, but I have my social and family life to woory about plus I have a TV and web access

Let's also count my six to eight hours in the car per week where I also listen to music closely, I take mental notes of what's to say about the music.... so when I write the review.... it flows freely and effortlessly.

And if you sometimes find that a review is poorer, it's because I was probably not ready enough but had to write the review or rent another week the album. These are generally the thursday evening reviews....LOL

But enough thread high-jacking.......EmbarrassedEmbarrassedEmbarrassed

The whole discographies of Fred Frith, John Zorn, Zappa.

No, I'm kidding. I still have to complete King Crimson, Magma, Yes, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Carcass, Living Colour, Front 242 or Cabaret Voltaire.

I am not a completist, and would rather get albums I like from many different bands than all the albums - the good, the bad, and the ugly - from a favourite band or artist. At present I own only one almost complete discography - that of Blue Oyster Cult (I am only missing Club Ninja, which I will eventually get, though it's by far their weakest album).
