| I am obsessed with Kansas. I know they are a little cheesy, but that kind of makes me like them more. Steve Hackett was obviously a fan. I think they are the perfect mixture of hard rock and prog. I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of any classic or modern bands who sound similar to Kansas. |

As do they me.  I often find myself upset at how they always seem to become overshadowed by the 'big boys' in Symphonic Prog like Yes and Genesis. More people I talk to seem to know about those two bands than Kansas, and to be honest, I've enjoyed "Carry on Wayward Son" immensely more than anything Phil and crew have ever come up with.  |

Phil and crew absolutely merit no comparison with Kansas or any other prog band for that matter. Phil went pure diabetes-inducing-sweet-pop.... Kansas is excellent music and some good lyrics too. Worth the time and money and listen, anyday! ------------- PROG ROCKS! |

I've known Kansas since they released Masque, but I have grave difficulties with them, in that whenever I put one of their albums on, I just can't keep focused and my mind wanders to all sorts of other things.
I don't have that with most of the other classic recordings of that era mentioned above. Something about that music just fails to grab me.
In that way I've automatically filed them under pleasant background music.
I have just the same problem with later Rush, by the way. After Hemispheres they just sort of lost me.

Depends what appeals to your in their music (i.e., the 70s symph songs, the mostly Walsh-written hard bluesy ones, the 80s stuff with Steve Morse, or the more mature but less grandeous stuff they recorded between 'Freaks' and 'Somewhere to Elsewhere'. Here's some bands that get mentioned often as having ties to, or similarities to Kansas:

In the modern prog scene Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings should appeal to you.

| i think actualy find Kansas and Gentle Giant quite similar (mixing classic music with rock) and quite obscurd songs actualy some songs on Point of No return ar a bit Gentle giant soundig. (and bouth use violins) |

Oddly enough, though I've been a Kansas fan since the late '70's, those two haven't really clicked with me. I'm not going to put them down though, nor have I written them off. |

I definitely agree that Spocks Beard should appeal to Kansas fans, although I'm not sure about TFK, as great as they are. Not that much of a connection to these ears. I have listened to a fair bit of Kansas on Last FM in recent weeks, as I had not heard mjuch of them previously, and have thoroughly enjoyed what I have heard. At times Ayreon will do bits that sound very Kansas like, specifically "Looser" and "Pain" from The Human Equation.

I don't hear Kansas in The Flower Kings either, actually. It's just that since they are both symphonic prog, and since the Flower Kings make exceptional music in the genre, it should appeal to a Kansas fan. -------------

Maybe too obvious but Kerry Livgren solo and Steve Walsh solo as well as in Streets. Also, Seventh Key, which has an appearance by Kerry Livgren and is a side project of Kansas alum Bill Greer and Mike Slamer (I think that they were both in Kansas, or if not they appeared on Steve Walsh solo or Streets albums. Or I could be completely wrong). -------------

Somewhere on the web I found an interview with Kerry Livgren, in which he said that two of his favorite albums were Acquiring the Taste and Three Friends. I hear a lot of GG in Kansas. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have a lot to check out. The only other bands I could really find who sound like Kansas were the early symph guys and the guys from Kansas' generation. |

I like how you have made the distinctions between the many sides of Kansas. They are a lot more versatile than most people think. I prefer everything from their debut til Audio Visions. It has to be grandiose and complex, but it also has to have heavy guitar based rock. That's why I love them so much. They mix the emotional depth of classically inspired prog with the visceral guitar orchestras that were so common throughout the 70s. I also love the voices of Walsh and Steinhardt. They accent each other perfectly. |

GLASS HAMMER, SALEM HILL, ECHOLYN and Neal Morse-era SPOCK'S BEARD have shown many signs of KANSAS influence. To a lesser degree, but still noticeable, MAGELLAN's first two albums and RELAYER's first three also do.
In the metal areas, old QUEENSRYCHE and pre-"V" SYMPHONY X have also shown that sort of influence.

Why chessy? I don't think they're cheessy at all. I saw Kansas live last month in Buenos Aires and they were great. I'm not familiar with their 80's stuff, but the albums from Song for America to Point of known return are all amazing, I like Freaks of nature and Somewhere to elsewhere a lot too. -------------
