Here you can share ideas of your own songs and maybe how they are played. Here's a thing i came up with:

I was just noddling around on the piano when i came up with this cool chord sequence:
7/8 :| C#m7 (1) C#sus4 | C#m7 (2) C#sus4 |: x2
6/8 :| C#m7 (1) C#sus4 | C#m7 (2) C#sus 4| C#m7 (1) C#sus4 | F# E |:
(C#m7 (1) played as an E (B, E, G#) with C# and G# in the left hand
C#m7 (2) played as an E (E, G#, B) with C# and G# in the left hand
C#sus4 played as an F# (C#, F#, Bb) with C# and G# in the left hand)
then:
4/4 :| C#madd11 | Bsus4 | F#7 | A6 |: x3
4/4 | C#madd11 | Bsus4 | F#7/Bb| Gmaj7 | Gmaj7 |
C#madd11 played C#, E, F# with C# and G# in the left hand
Just a regular Bsus4 with B and F# in the left hand
F#7 played Bb, C#, E, F# with F# and C# in the left hand
Just a regular A6 and Gmaj7
Then something starting on F#m
I should get a life

Oh, and it's played on the organ with a bit of distortion. Then there's pretty intense drumming during the 7/8 and 6/8. It cools down a bit when it settles in 4/4 time. And then there's a simple bassline aswell.
Sounds like it sould fit in Heavy Prog, Proto-prog or Psychedelic/Spacerock

Yeah, I got this theme album building up where all songs are bassed on the same theme that is a shuffle beat and a C / Am / F / G7 pattern on 4/4. There'll be 8 songs, all 3,5 minutes and all about love.

4/4 | C#madd11 | Bsus4 | F#7/Bb| Gmaj7 | Gmaj7 |

Then slowed down a bit to a bluesy mood with a descending bassline: 6/8: :| F#m | F#m7 | F#m6 | D/F# |:
F#m played A, C#, F# with F# and C# in the left hand (Bass playing F#) F#m7 played A, C#, E with F# and C# in the left hand (Bass playing E) F#m6 played A, C#, Eb with F# and C# in the left hand (Bass playing Eb) D/F# played F#, A, D with F# and C# in the left hand (Bass playing D)
Then the first couple of bars repeated: 7/8 :| C#m7 (1) C#sus4 | C#m7 (2) C#sus4 |: x2
Then a slow and intense part with constant cymbals: 6/8 :| C#m | A | Bbdim | A |:

So it ended up being 3:54. Entirely instrumental. Could fit on a heavy rock album from 1971 i think

I recently came up with this pretty cool sounding metal riff in 11/8 in the key of D (yeah drop D tuning ). There's also a lot of tri-tone usage in that main riff. I've been working on it a lot and it's pretty much a completed song now, but if I typed it in here, it wouldn't make much sense as I am theory illiterate. I just know what time I'm playing and what basic key I'm in. Despite the song being in 11/8, then shifting to 7/8, then to 6/8 and then to 5/4 it's not very difficult to follow because my drummer was able to get a beat going pretty easily!

Well, I only write the lyrics for my band, not the music, but right now we're working on a 25 minute epic called Faustaus 2031, based on the Christopher Marlowe play about a man who sells his soul to the devil for power and respect, only we changed a bunch of stuff around but kept the main theme, i would give you the full lyrics only it would take too long for everyone to read, so instead I'll just give you a little taste
The strange dream remains in my eyes Could the demon have heard my empty cries Was my mind just playing tricks on me? Or could my soul no longer be free?

Hey that's pretty rad. A good example of a prog song. It sounds more like a song than an instrumental. I like how you used the guitar, not overdone. Just chipping in with a combined riff with the organ. A bit of clav and flute too. It's mainly a jazz based form of rock in a way van der graaf, wakeman, gentle giant(someone mentioned) can be. But it's still unique. There's even a classical feel in the middle with the violin, piano, mellotron. Do you have any lyrics?

Please do. [email protected] is my MSN. I'd love to take a look at it through GP.
EDIT: Ah, sorry, saw that you posted that file already. No matter - you can send that other file you're working on, if I may ask.
The Gm7, Am7, Bbmaj7, Am7- one.
EDIT 2: The only thing with the first composition is, that it desperately needs vocals and possibly lyrics too. I think the lyrics posted here would make a very interesting mix... Or maybe not...?

Not meaning to argue, just I cant totally hear some vocals like Aorta's backing your organ work up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbpJT7-th9U&feature=channel_page
There are certain points in your compositions which lack something... Specifically a melody! It's just chord progression with rhythm+bass. I'm listening to your new composition and the bars 25-32 repeat 10 times and it has no melody or even a solo in that section. That definitely would be an awesome bit for some lyrics. And when it has good lyrics and vocals too, it will be probably a 5 star song! In the previous composition as well. It had cool riffs for the organ. Extremely cool! But again, for example 7-18 it's definitely missing a melody, which would be a perfect spot for vocals. In fact I ceep hearing your piece as structured as a very brilliant song. It has a brilliant intro from 1-6th bar, then a cool verse bit, with a conclusion from 21 - onwards. After that it gets interesting enough to work as instrumental, but when it repeats the bit from 7-18 on 41-51- AGAIN it would be brilliant for a second verse. It seems you were composing in song format. I'd say don't worry. They'll still be very progressive, even without being instrumental.
But ah well, sorry if I went too far. Just my (strong...) oppinions. Cool compositions anyways, just tried some constructive criticism.

Thanks for the comments! As i said earlier, in "Frågetecken", i removed the organ solo so i could solo on top of it myself. And maybe you're right about the first song. I haven't heard your tunes but If you go by the original method of prog, then your music is prog. Don't worry about the actual word 'progressive' it's just a name given by critics . I don't follow the modern formula of prog(which I think is wrong) where bands TRY to invent new styles of METAL. Real prog isn't guitar based music, it's rock music played by musicians who don't get enough from standard rock. The type of musicians who want things to be busy and interesting. Therefore, you jazz it up with jazz drumming, flutes, sax etc and you give the bass player more of a say in the songs while the guitarist plays as part of the band(rather than metal where the guitarist takes over completely), while bringing in some classical key playing and melodies. There you have it. PROG. You won't find me listening to Porcupine tree etc. BORING. Where's the jazzy playing and the classical melody. Nowhere to be heard . I only enjoy original style prog old and new(rare, but some around), but as long as they follow the original formula then they will be interesting. Otherwise, I find it boring just like most rock music apart from prog and fusion. Just like proggers in 1969 prog found most rock music boring imo

Abstract, you have inspired me though.
I liked your "Egg"'ish sound on the first piece and set out for my own harmonies also. So I've come up with a thingy alternating between 7/8 and 4/4 in every one bar and with a chord progression of Emadd2, A11, Emadd2, A11, F#m7, F7sus2, Emadd2, A11. Sounds wicked.
And I'm definitely gonna have vocals on that.
I didn't compose it in a very progressive way though. I just took up the guitar - I don't know how to play a single thing on it (Except for Em and E major chords!) and took some random harmonies, til' something sounded good. Then remade it to those progressions. :P

Yes, what HolyMoly described is I think a suspended or sus chord.
Add2 is that you simply take the chord and count up to the second step and then you ADD it. (add - get it? :P) Emadd2 for example is the E minor chord with the note F# added there. F# being the second step from the root of the chord - E. (I am in the key of E minor, so F is an F#)
So yes... it can also be written as an add9. E, F#, G, B. add2 and add9 are the same thing technically. Though Em9 would be another thing entirely. My music teacher said to me that add2 is the correct form of writing the chord down... I wouldn't know though, I've come across add9 constantly too.
Btw, you said earlier that you don't know how to put GP5 files to MP3's. Well if you look, then you'll find that GP "file" has an export file option. You can export your GP5 music as a WAVE file. Then all you need to do is a find a program to remake Wave files to MP3's. And there are free to DL programs available for that. I suggest just typing "WAVE to MP3" to google and I think you'll find one. Only thing is that, while playing the GP while recording it to WAVE you have to adjust your sound from the control bar so that it wouldn't record anything but what you hear from the speakers.

That's what i thought. Emadd9 is how i would write it, though. And yeah, it sounds lovely! So does Bm/E, which equals a Em9, right?
|

Em9 would consist of the notes E, F#, G, B and D. So basically the Em7+add9 is written out as simply Em9.

Or you could play it in it's "full" form, which is E, G, B, D, F#. F# being an octave above the starting E Or make it sound even cooler by holding down E and B in the left hand, and G, D and F# in the right hand.

So.
I'll add to your thread Abstrakt. As I've enjoyed our exchanges so far.
Here are some lyrics I have worked on.
* * *
The title - "An Excerpt from a Conversation Between Two People"
I am sitting in your eyes now
and I don't know where I am
anymore...
I see your little stars glow
on the sky of some far away land
and I reach for them...
Perhaps forty thousand years now
waiting on a sea of sand...
Or perhaps
drowning within some hollow
dreamlike substance that I have now found
in your silent worlds.
In your silent words.
I am glowing in your sky now.
For I burn to be known
and touched.
Perhaps as some kind of frail
and pretentious hint of a frown
or a smile in the wind.
A smile in the wind.
I am sitting on a cloud now
I don't know which way is up or down
please tell me
do I still have to sit here -
or perhaps I can at last come down
A laugh at my silent worlds.
And laugh my silent words.
* * *
Pretty abstract lyrics in their own right. I tried to capture a state of thought I was in at one moment.

Not music, but a poem i wrote based on the meter of "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden:
TRANSLATION (sort of): What i see in profile is a restless crocodile who is tired like never before, everything in the water is dead now. What i know. Irrelevant(?) like a lonely elephant who rarely smiles anymore. He's the only one who sees. What i hear, it destroys. What i am and what i better do. A ??? is heard, a shout is heard. This can't be the end? In a hole, in a pile, everything the vaccum cleaner cleaned up. Sweep it in under the carpet and now it's all mine. Up on land, in my hand, a mighty blood-red stripe is showing. All the way here, why? I don't have any dynamite.
I'm not sure it made much sense to start with, and it makes even less sense when translated. Feel free to Intepret it any way you want! I hope you enjoyed it

im currently working on what i thought was going to be a 3 part suite, but is now going to be either 4 or 5 parts (working on part 4). It's still unnamed. I used riffs, melodies, and other ideas and interchange them within each song. Kind of inspired by Dream Theater's 12 Step suite, and Frank Zappa's conceptual continuity.
for example there is one riff played once in part 1, and i expanded on it in part 3, which made the bulk of the song. Part 2 plays the main theme from part 1 to connect the theme from part 2 to this jazz-fusion-like section. there is also a sad sounding 2 chord sequence for solos that runs though the
suite, part 1 contains a fast 6/8 version of it with trombone soloing.
Part 2 features the same 2 chords, but in 4 and a little funkier (at
least in the groove) with a hammond organ solo. i currently working in another version of the sequence with extra harmonies for part 4, but i dont know which instrument is going to take the solo.
part 1 is very dark, and extremely jazzy. there's a bunch of King Crimson influence, but thats only because i enjoy working with tri-tones. A little Planet X sounding in certain parts. lots of electric and rhodes piano. part 1 is about 3 and 1/2 minutes
Part 2 is (so far) the most prog rock of the suite, it goes through different themes, and a couple of melodies (one being the main theme) and is played over the original chords to accompany it. however, as i was writing part 2, the sad sounding chords sounded awesome under the main theme. so you hear both at some point in the song. it goes into the jazzy part, with the sax ripping it down over an interesting melody. it goes to a happy, triumphant section, which you hear throughout the song, but here it is expanded on and played in full, sounding more upbeat. the end sounds like it would be the end of the suite, but the final chord is a very dissonant chord giving you the feeling that it's not over. part 2 is a little more than 8 minutes.
part 3 is mostly an expansion of one riff from part 1, and so far is the shortest one, with lots of odd meters, poly rythyms and such. there is another hammond solo over a walking bassline with the guitar playing the chord sequence under the theme from part 1. there is one riff from part 2 that is brought back, and played in cut time. this one's really technical, and really hard to play. part 3 is not even 2 minutes long.
part 4 is so far the most jazz fusion of the suite, but not finished.
so far, there are no guitar solos in the suite. there probably wont be either. (im a guitarist)
as one whole suite this will be my 39th completed composition. they easily can stand by themselves as individual songs as well, so if you count it like that, and if the suite becomes 5 parts, they will be my 39th, 40th, 41st, 42nd, and 43rd completed song. i kind of prefer to cound all of them as my 39th because, unlike the 12 step suite, im writing them all in one shot, plus i want my 40th work to be spectacular, though i dont think about the numbers too much anyway.
i would like to show it to you guys when im finished, but i dont know how to do that. they're MIDI files, and i have a weird sound recorder on my computer.

So, I figured out how to upload MP3's to this site.
And here's a little prog instrumental by me, which I have been working on for some time. It's called "Composition a'la Genesis."

It began with me coming up with a random guitar riff to go with a rhythm for 7/8 time signature, as I'd never really used it fully before. The riff was strong enough so I started to go from there. Composed in true canonical prog rock standards. A lot of modulations and time signature changes between 7/8, 6/8, 3/4, 4/4 etc. Has some 2-3 main themes in it, mostly built upon riffs. Largely inspired by the music of early Genesis. Hence the title. Too bad the sound quality was reduced a bit by me transporting it from Guitar Pro 5 to MP3. For example - no stereo effect. I guess it'll have to do. Oh, and also has an atonal polyphonic part. That's my own personal favorite - everyone else hates it though.
Oh and my "band" hyardacil in that site thus far has 2 other compositions uploaded there. 1 is a very short thingy (under a minute) for organ and the other a decent length solo piece for the acoustic guitar. The only thing so far I'm not happy about this piece is that it sounds too damn happy. The best bit is - in my opinion - because of that the atonal part and the middle part keyboard solo that goes to minor keys at times.
Anyways - always looking for constructive criticism. Anyone who feels like it's not too much trouble... As I can see there are a lot of realy musicians hanging around here. Care to give me some words?

some cool relaxed genesis/van der graaf styled prog there |
Thanks, they are two of my favourite bands!
I see you also post chord progressions here. Here is another one (a quasi waltz in 5/4, three beats on the first and two beats on the second):
Db – Adim7/C Bbm7 – C#7/G# Am7 – Ab7#5 Gmaj7 – D/F# Fm6 – Em7 B/D# – E/D A/C# – Cdim7
… and finally back to
Db
If you play through these chords, remember to avoid parallell 5ths and octaves !

Here's a couple of old project's of mine, which some of you might have heard before (whatever..):
http://www.last.fm/music/Bj%25C3%25B8rnar%2BLunde%2B%2526%2BEspen%2BHauge - Bjørnar Lunde & Espen Hauge
A 12 minute fusion improvisation recorded spring 2008. Me on the drums and Espen on the bass and guitar. It's mainly in 6/4 time although some variations occur.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8vJRRl44OI - Ole Bjørnar's
A wacky parody of the christmas song "Santa's Coming Home Tonight" complete with jazz and blues influences and some really bizarre time signatures. VERY proggy!

The key you provided for file download was invalid. This is usually

I use guitar pro 5 too and I have some tunes tabbed, I'm just waiting to get a decent sound card to make a record =(
anyway, could ya upload the tune again please?
well here's my latest tune, I guess it's finished but I'd like to add an alternative verse or chorus after the guitar solo instead of that cross-faded transition to the Outro... I play guitar, bass and I also sing, that's why my keyboard lines aren't pretty creative to be honest xD.. Oh and I also need to work on the score, right key signatures, etc..
anyway here it is

argh, just a few links are working I tried them all, and yers Progmonster 2008 aren't working either =/
Well about what I listened to:
Hyardacil - Composition a'la Genesis
Very cool song man, the only low point here is the bass riff in the beggining, it sounds a little pointless and out of direction, besides that the song is very interesting, cool moods, nice melodies and soloing. there was a bunch of good breaks and nice atmospheres here and there, so I'm totally gonna give it a few listens more =)

Ah, dammit! Which one do you want? "Ingen Titel" or "Frågetecken?"?
Ingen Titel (No title) = A heavy jazz/rock instrumental Frågetecken? (Quesntion mark?) = A melodic jazzy "alternativ" instrumental

I'm writing a song, it's aimed to be pretty proggish. The difference compared to you all is that I'm actually playing and recording the parts (guitar, bass, piano, clarinet, vocals. The drums are programmed). It's kinda slow going, because I'm constantly redoing parts when I decide I don't like them anymore.
Still, it's a lot fun. Haven't done lyrics yet.

I came up with a piece of freestyle vocal (scat singing in a certain respect really) It's a cross between prog and grunge. I tried to cross the sound of little bits of Yes, Pearl Jam, Wishbone Ash and Pixies style vocals. It worked! I might use it as a proggy piece on its own and extend it, or have some lyrical verses put around it so it becomes an innovative trademark for an otherwise ordinary blues rock song.
