Hmm... a little less morose version of FOABP with some Deadwing and Lightbulb sun thrown in there?

Sounds quite fantastic to me. It seems like a pretty diverse suite, and I like that. In the medley I've heard some softer parts, some very heavy parts, and even something that reminded me a bit of Indie rock. Also, in the medley where some very interesting sounding synth parts. The medley also sounds very dark like FOABP, and I really like that. The mood FOABP has is amazing.

I'm not going to water down my opinion, but again it's just my opinion. I'm not really a fan of Porcupine Tree and FOABP bored me a lot of the time. I was thinking of getting this album to give them another try but after listening to the preview I'm pretty sure I won't care for it at all.

Pretty much what I thought - The main sections of it were much more Alternative rock than prog, not bad by any means.

Oh, absolutely. Brilliant!
Very 'Floydian' Guitar work here and there, as well, it seems. Haven't heard that side of PT for nearly a decade!

Yeah. The mellower sections of this album seem to be very akin to the early PT days, while the heavier sh*t on it is more modern and in-line with their edgier side. Best of both worlds, if you ask me. I'm absolutely stoked, now! I couldn't stop grooving at that crazy rhythm section near the end of the preview.

One thing I have to say about this is the more I listen to it, the more it seems it will be a classic album... Just has that feel to it, and after the first listen, I could remember nearly all of the riffs...

I know, right? I felt the same way about it! Unbelievable, but honestly, I think PT are better than ever on this one, and for me to say that merely based on a preview track, that's saying a lot.

There seems to be an interesting mix of the old PT, and a newer edgier, more angular metal disposition. Needless to say, I'm counting down the days untill the release.
Roll on September 14!

Looks like it is going to be another hit album for PT. I'm looking forward to hearing it through fully, though the preview gives a good indication that PT's music style is leaning firmly toward metal - not that I personally object to that

I've heard the album preview a couple of times now.......BRILLIANT. What I love about this album is that it is coming out at a time when I have fully dove into the world of metal, something I harshly criticized in the past. I loved FOABP but always thought I was being taunted by how short the great heavy parts were. Now, the parts are even heavier. You can really hear the Meshuggah influence in them now. I also love the added electronic bits in PT now, which I've never heard quite to the level as I heard in the incident preview. I was pretty skeptical initially with this release in that I thought nothing could top Fear of a Blank Planet (or at least I wouldn't like it as much) but now I have no hesitation in saying this is probably going to be their best album yet!!

Well I for one wasn't too impressed with the preview. Nothing really stood out to me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't incredible. Of course, these kinds of previews aren't always the best way to sample new music, so I'm not going to say much else about it. Some parts did sound really promising and it would have been great to hear where they went with those ideas so hopefully it'll excite me more when the full song drops.

This album is going to be awesome, although that's not something I wouldn't expect from PT! I hope there are more mellow parts on this one than FOABP though. I just want to see another change in musical direction; I want to be surprised. EXCELLENT NEWS!!!
The Incident audio preview
07-13-2009
A medley of extracts from The Incident is now available to listen to on the Porcupine Tree myspace page, or the Roadrunner UK website (from 4PM UK today).
Written and recorded between September-May, "The Incident" is the tenth studio album by Porcupine Tree. Released worldwide by Roadrunner on 14th September (one week earlier than previously announced in order to coincide with the first tour dates), the album is a 2 disc set, the first disc containing the 55 minute title track / song cycle, and the second CD featuring 4 shorter pieces. There will be 3 editions of the album; a standard 2 CD set, a deluxe edition (contents to be confirmed), and a double vinyl version.
Isn't that just great?! Worldwide release, AND we now know when the tour starts
Its been on the site for a while now, but no one has posted it in this thread yet...

It's the 2nd of August already, and I'm getting kind of curious now... I can't find it anywhere on the Roadrunner site, where it should be.
Nor can I...
Wasn't the single meant to be out by now anyway?
It hasn't been posted on the Porcupine Tree site in the news section either
Quoted from the Roadrunner UK site: "Porcupine Treeare currently working on the first video from their upcoming album THE INCIDENT with director Lasse Hoile, which will be for the track Time Flies- the central part to the opening 55 minute track of the album."
I guess the video is what causes the delay, as the song has to be edited and finished before the video is made. I think it's quite annoying that Roadrunner or PT don't announce that the release date of Time Flies is moved.

It was worded perfectly IMO, and I've never heard that it would be split into the tracks before... Its meant to be one 55 minute track on CD1, and the other 4 tracks on CD2, to stress the difference and the lack of relation between the first track and the other four.

FIRST REVIEW:
Over the years, trying to determine what is true "prog rock" and what
is not has become an increasingly tricky proposition. In the early
'70s, it was easy -- any band that performed "suites" that extended
across entire album sides and dressed in capes and/or cloaks was a dead
giveaway. However, when the early '80s rolled around, most former prog
rockers trimmed out the fat from their compositions (and exchanged
their medieval wear and kimonos for what looked like sports coats).
Ever since, there have been bands that have aligned themselves to
either of the aforementioned prog rock approaches. But along came
Porcupine Tree, who somehow have found a way to incorporate both into
their 2009 effort, The Incident. Set up similarly to http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:gifwxqr5ldke - Rush 's 1978 classic, http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:09fwxqy5ldhe - Hemispheres , The Incident
is comprised of a single long song -- the title track -- that features
many different movements (which would have taken up the entire side one
back in the good ol' days of vinyl), as well as a handful of shorter
compositions that close the album. The aforementioned title track will
certainly be the talk of the album, as it manages to incorporate
bombast and melody (the sixth movement, which shares the album's
title), rock ("Octane Twisted"), http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:difoxqr5ldfe - Yes ' folky moments ("The Seance"), and http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:kpfuxqw5ld6e - Tool -like

cloud of fairy dust ("I Drive the Hearse"). That said, unlike early
proggers who favored meandering instrumental doodling over succinct
songwriting, Porcupine Tree always favor the importance of memorable
songs over flashy solos, which certainly makes the group one of the top
modern-day prog rock bands.

Set up similarly to http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:gifwxqr5ldke - Rush 's 1978 classic, http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:09fwxqy5ldhe - Hemispheres , The Incident is comprised of a single long song -- the title track -- that features
many different movements (which would have taken up the entire side one
back in the good ol' days of vinyl), as well as a handful of shorter
compositions that close the album.

Thanks for posting - Not sure what to think about this... Allmusic did give RELAYER (YES) 3/5 after all...

Allmusic - bah, not as bad as RS, but still pretty mundane. I'd never take advice from them about an album over the word of those who know what they are talking about.
