Out of the ashes of Höyry-Kone, came this totally crazy finnish band
Alamaailman Vasarat (The Hammers of the Underworld). Totally
instrumental, this band has a few acoustic death metal songs on their
two albums  with mightily impressive cello playing, but most of their tracks are still quite mellow and jazzy.It's almost impossible to categorize this band, some have tried, saying that they play "ethnic brass punk" or "kosher-kebab jazz" (whatever that means). The main influences come from gypsy jazz music and classical music. Especially their second album "Käärmelautakunta" is very good, perhaps my fav album of 2003  .Any fans? or has anybody even heard of them? -------------

But Fusion? I think it's better off in the RIO kind of environment!
They can also be described as Folk Prog, a bit of psychedelic here and there....very close to a "Humppa" band IMO (If you listen to Tuomari Nurmio & Alamaailman Vasarat's Kinaporin Kalifaatti you will know what I mean

Well yeah, perhaps they are closer to RIO than fusion but I put them on
this section because the site categorized them as a fusion band. But
anyway, great band! I've heard Kinaporin Kalifaatti,
it's quite different from their other albums, clearly due to Tuomari
Nurmio's influence. It's quite close to "humppa" just like you
said .

Of course it's different because it's not their album, it's a Tuomari Nurmio album with Alamaailman Vasarat as his band/guests
 And it's VERY close to Humpaa, indeed...

Yeah, I wish they would do a new album with some other vocalist.. Tuomari Nurmio is too "humppa" for their music IMO . We'll see.

I own 'Vasaraasia' and enjoy it quite a bit. Undoubtly very original,
but becomes a bit repetitive after a while. An occasional listening,
but always a joy I also discovered 'Kingston Wall' from a friend's cd player while visiting Helsinki about 6 weeks ago, and quite liked what I was hearing. I know Kingston Wall is a favourite of yours, Jimbo, and was just wondering if there's an album I should avoid, and one I should definitely get? |

Definitely get KW's second album. It's clearly their most balanced and best album. Their first album was basically a raw version of the KW II, while with their third album they tried to distance themselves from their hard-rock roots, adding some techno influences to the mix. But II is definitely their best album! Avoid "Freak-out remixes". EDIT: BTW, why was this thread moved? they are in the archives... -------------
