The word 'khatru' was apparently invented by Jon Anderson. (from Wiki)

I remember from Dan Hedges' biography that it was supposedly a Yemenite word, meaning "if you wish".

I think the more important question is why do you need to hold down the window? Tongue

I see now that there are quite some internet sites where this question has been tackled.
I get the impression that the Yemenite theory is not very heavily supported by evidence material.
Still, it would probably be the only time in Yes where Anderson made a word up, isn't it?
I hope you can all get a good night's sleep without knowing for sure what a Khatru is.
Some Yes fans had their imagination running wild at the word: http://www.yesfans.com/archive/index.php/t-1930.html - http://www.yesfans.com/archive/index.php/t-1930.html  .

Khatru is the place where Dr. Seuss went to bring back an itkutch, a preep, a proo, a nerkle, a nerd and a seersucker too.

Apparently it's in Siberia.  No word on whether any of the aforementioned beasties go through the motions.

"Khatru" is the name "Catherine" translated in Ingouchi, a Siberian linguage. So, "Siberian Khatru" is quite redundant.

Khatru is a heart-spoken word for which there is no literal translation in any language with more than one speaker. This word is used to bring lyrical content to a level of uttermost crappiness.

88 melter here.
I have always enjoyed Jon Anderson's word painting. If you watch the words go by, you will see lots of open vowel sounds at the ends of musical phrases, and at held notes. I think he wrote words that would make his vocal sound good, and that would allow him to project with an open sound over the instruments. Rick Wakeman always liked that song very much, and wrote part of the main theme, but never had any use for the abstract words.
Jon was reading alot of science fiction at that time, and a friend tells me that "And You and I" is based on some ideas from Isaac Asimov's Foudation Trilogy. I think the semi-religious allusions to cold reigning kings, cold stainless, i.e. without blemish, not fancy steel, nails, and (Martin) Luther in "Siberian Khatru" are simply an attempt to get profound and keep those open vowel sounds a'comin'.
If there is a vein of traditional spirituality in progressive rock, this lyric tries to mine it in a nice non-demoninational way, while still sounding tripped-out enough for the stoners of that day, (were you there when they rolled that number up?)

SmileI usually do shut up and go away. I try not to make more than two or three replies to any given posting. No rudeness taken, less keystrokes are fine by me.
Glad to know that someone thinks my ideas about YES lyrics have some validity. The entire "Close to the Edge" album has these aspects. Oh, and don't forget about the "Christian changer" line. Is it meant to be a contrast to the "suntower, asking" line?, clearly a pagan reference.

Every vaguely Asian-sounding word that sounds like a proper noun and is found in progressive rock is, in case you don't know what it is, probably some kind of space horse. Cool
