Yes, I am indeed 14 years old, and I have, over the last few months of lurking on this website, become deeply obsessed with Prog, in all shapes and sizes. After a year of putting up with current popular music, which I can't stand in the slightest, I decided to look for music separate from the norm. At first I tried some classic rock, exposing me to Led Zeppelin. I managed to scrounge a few of their more popular songs from my parents library, however those wouldn't quite quench my thirst. So, like any other 14 year old with a computer would do, I looked to iTunes. To my shock, the online music giant possessed nothing but COVERS! Very discouraged, I reluctantly flipped through a few and found a cover of my favorite Zeppelin tune, Achilles Last Stand. I had never heard of the band, Dream Theater, but I really liked how they combined all of my favorite songs all in one, so I bought it. This track off of A Change of Seasons became the first piece of progressive rock I ever owned. I became quite hooked on the track and purchased a few original Dream Theater songs. After I wore out These Walls and Pull Me Under, I started collecting complete albums. First Octavarium, Then Train of Thought, and so on, until I owned almost their whole discography. I found myself not listening to anything other than Dream Theater, and decided it was time for something new. I quickly found this website and now, about a year later, own a feeble collection of around 60 prog albums. My library could be considered a bare-minimum prog starer kit, containing the PA Top 10, along with various other albums of popular prog bands, (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, etc.) I will continue to expose myself to as much of this wonderful music as my wallet will allow me, and hopefully build myself a respectable collection.

Awesome!
I'm 15
I've been listening to prog since I was about five, thanks to my dad, but became Addicted in 2003, when my Dad and I went to see YES: Live at the montreux jazz festival in sydney.
I was brought up on GENESIS, YES, ASIA and E.L.P Predominantly, but since, I've stemmed out quite a bit, finding Marillion, Dream Theater, Maudlin Of The Well, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, RADIOHEAD and many more.
Its good to hear some other young people listening to prog!
I'm finding more people around my age here on PA every day aswell
Thanks for the post

Man I'm sure glad you posted, I was afraid I was gonna have to be the only forum member here that doesn't remember the 80's!
My dad has had a big influence on my musical tastes as well, but he is more involved in the Jam-Band category. You're pretty lucky to have someone else introduce you to new music, I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to musical exploration Its kind of a bummer, mostly because I never really know for sure if what I'm buying is really worth it, other than the 30 second samples.

I've been hearing prog since I was 8 or 9 (mostly Dark Side of the Moon back then, as it's the only thing my parents have which is usually considered progressive) and then around 12 or 13 I found Primus, and found King Crimson through them, and found Yes by accident around the same time, along with a little jazz thanks to playing in the high school bands...since then, let's just say a bit of a chasm has been opening up between the music I listen to and the music my friends listen to. Now I'm 21 and have been happily obsessed with prog for a nice little while.

I was around 14 when I first found Pink Floyd, but now I am about to turn 19, pretty much like a lot of people, except I never liked Dream Theater. Metal isn't my thing, but I have always been drawn to experimental/psychedelic/space rock type stuff, and a little jazz influence never hurts. The best advice I would be able to give to someone who is "just starting out" in prog is to go full steam ahead, and Rush usually wins every poll.

As the father of a five-year old boy, it's good to hear that some of you picked it up from your parents. I don't know what I'd do if my kid grew up to like crappy music, or worse didn't care about music at all.

I'm feeling old here, suprisingly.
I'm 16, turning 17 next month. I have always been into music from age 5 or so, but it was at age 11 I started really listening to music intently.
Age 10-11: Classic Rock (Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Queen, some Pink Floyd)
Age 12: A very important year in music for me... Started listening to metal (I was a badass Grade 7, to be quite sure.) I can remember buying two VERY important albums in Grade 7 that really shaped me musically. 'Rising Force' by Yngwie Malmsteen (a f**king CLASSIC) and 'Transcendence' by Crimson Glory, which was also my first foray into prog metal
Age 13: Getting into Prog now. My first day of grade 8 wasn't so important as being the beginning of high school, as it was the day my copy of Metropolis Part II: Scenes From A Memory (Dream Theater) came in the mail. I always remember that day as my first dream theater day, nothing related to school at all =P
Age 14-15: Getting into extreme metal (black metal, death metal, extreme prog metal), alot of different styles of metal, and at age 14 i started really getting into PORCUPINE TREE.
Age 16: finally, avant-garde metal, post-rock, experimental, ambient and drone.
Who knows what will come next? ![Shocked Shocked](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif)

The 5 albums that most shaped my interest in prog were easily:
YES - Tormato
YES - Relayer
Jon Anderson - Olias Of Sunhillow
Genesis - A Trick Of The Tail
YES - Drama
(For DRAMA, I can specifically remember one day sitting in the car with my family and my dad put on "Into The Lens"... Don't know why that stuck with me, seems significant though.)

Pink Floyd and Dream Theater were my first prog influences, as well as Queensryche. In all three cases, I was introduced to those bands by my sister. Queensryche came first. She started to listen to Pink Floyd when she was dating her first boyfriend, I was 14 at the time. Ultimately, her interest in Floyd faded and mine never did. Dream Theater came a couple of years later. I remember listening to "Space Dye Vest" from their album Awake, as I was driving one day, and I must have replayed that song about four times. I really enjoyed the keyboard solos in that particular track.
I love piano and keyboards, and I think that in particular is one reason why I like progressive metal so much. Obviously there is more than that I like, but that's what really got me interested. I didn't really branch out too much for a few years, as I got into a classic rock phase in my college years. I really branched out my prog horizons when I had Rhapsody and Emusic subscriptions for awhile. From there I found so many great bands; Pain of Salvation, Evergrey, Wolverine, Echolyn, etc etc.
Favorite Prog CDs: The Perfect Element part one Remedy Lane The Inner Circle Operation Mindcrime Metropolis part II: Scenes from a Memory
A little off-track. Oops. Point being, the roots of my prog interests started in my early teenage years with a few key bands, but didn't really branch out until I was about 22.

Hmm for me significant moments were:
This is my musical adventure thus far:
Pre - My parents constantly played The Beatles and other classic rock...
Age 2 - I went to my first concert... Raffi. :P I've since seen hundreds of bands. Age 4 - I became obsessed with Smashmouth (who I also saw at that age). It sounds stupid but they were the first band I was ever truly obsessed with. Age 10 - I saw School of Rock... it entirely changed my life, seriously. My mom bought me AC/DC's Back in Black, this got me into rock. I listened to mostly classic rock back then. I also started to play guitar then. Age 11 - I bought Master of Puppets by Metallica which introduced me to metal. Age 12 - I got heavily involved in Grunge and other metal. Introduced me to the darker side of things. Late 12 - I was into Nu Metal briefly... bad period of musical taste. :P Age 13 - I got into Tool which introduced me to prog (even though I wasn't really aware of it), and to other metal. Age 14 - I started to get into extreme metal... the most significant band being Opeth! Opeth broadened my musical taste so much it's not even funny! I found prog because of them! And they're still my favorite band... I also started to collect CDs and vowed to never buy any music digitally again. Age 15 - I started listening to all different genres of music from minimalist folk to funeral doom metal. I tried to be as eclectic as humanly possible. Age 16 - Pretty much the same as 15 hahaha... I bought my first turntable and began to collect vinyl and now have over 300 LPs...

I started listening to prog when I was thirteen thanks to my older brothers (they are musicians). Thanks to them I own a great vinyl collection of the genre and a huge addiction to prog.
The more I'm getting older (I'm 28 now)the most I'm looking back to find forgotten LPs, lost gems, live performances , everything relevant, and I'm buing as much new records as possible.

Hello, I'm not listening to prog so much like classic rock, but I like it. It's much better than other music. I found the way to prog couple of years ago and for this years prog never bored me.(In fact, I'm 15 and I loved this music since I was 7) I listened to Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull and so on (Are Queen prog ? I don't think so, but I had to write them here, they was my first rock band). But for last year I listen to prog more and more ... and it's still better. From newest I like bands like Beardfish or The Decemberists. People in my life don't understand music so much, but my boyfriend love music a lot, so I can speak about music (and especially prog) with him. Progarchives rulez !

I got into prog music, along with metal, when I was about 11 years old - only I didn't know it was prog back then.

You're only 15? That's a wild avatar for a 15 year old. Prying open the third eye, correct?

I got into Pink Floyd when I was 15 [Didn't know they were Prog at the time ] 2 years later, my scope has expanded ever-so-much to Queen, David Bowie [Not really Prog, but yeah], The Alan Parsons Project [more Art Rock, i think] Genesis [Peter Gabriel era] & currently in the process of discovering King Crimson
