Tonight! Michael met his death, and Mikael is meeting his death metal bandmates. (laugh track) King Crimson may sound good, but King Wilson sounds ever better. (laugh track) Who is the King of Prog? That is a "progblem". (laugh track) This is The Progbert Report. (progressive theme music)
Nation, I'm Steven Progbert. (laugh track) Ever since the king of pop Michael Jackson passed away, I've been thinking, who is the king of the Progbert Nation? (not-so-loud laughter) I personally nominate Steven Wilson, because he has my first name. (laugh track) Steve Howe, you're so "close to the edge", you're just one letter behind! (laugh track) Despite having written the song "King Of Loss", Daniel Gidenlow wasn't included in the king candidates list, because http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=57787 - a previous poll indicates that he is the least famous prog musician among the famous prog musicians, (laugh track) and because I couldn't type the Swedish letter "o" with two dots above. (laugh track) However, I did nominate Mikael Akerfeldt even though I couldn't type the Swedish letter "A" with a circle. King of Sweden, you should simplify your alphabet. (not-so-loud laughter) When I started writing this poll, I was thinking about a "God of Prog" poll, but then I realized, that that title was already taken. Sorry, Frank Zappa, (applause) you can't be god and king at the same time, especially since you don't even like God in the first place. (a mixture of laughter and loud applause) People, I know I've been creating lots of bad polls recently, but not quite as bad as this poll is gonna be. (laugh track) Actually, it's not just a poll, it's an election. (sporadic applause) Let's welcome the PA members to vote for the king! (very loud and long-lasting applause)

Robert Fripp without a question. Peter Gabriel would be another good choice.

Good Post. But I would also have included Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammill. But Fripp wins hands down! Not only is he the King of Prog, he's also the King of Nastiness! I mean what kind of band leader would deny his fans a tour on their groups's 40th anniversary? When old Bobby is gone, you probably won't even be able to take a picture of his grave site!

As much as I like PT, I don't see why is he one of the choices, and I don't care about Opeth so obviously I think the same way about Akerfeldt (he is good but king of prog? give me a break) while there is no one from Genesis (Peter Gabriel wouldn't be exactly the best choice, who don't even listen to prog rock and have a good-but-not-very-prog solo career, I'd say Steve Hackett, who till this day is making prog albums), Rush (any of the three really), ELP (not one of my fav bands but could be there no doubt), DT (JP or MP) or other people such as Ian Anderson, Andy Latimer, Roine Stolt or Keith Emerson , just to name a few.
None of these for me, although Fripp or Howe would be logical choices from those four...

Going with the majority: Robert Fripp is the obvious one. I would have only stuck with classic artists since I would not consider voting for someone in such a topic (where both classic musicians and modern ones are listed) if they were not making music during Prog's classic years, was influential and important to the foundations of Prog.
Incidentally, I'd be more likely to think of Frank Sinatra as the king of pop, but that's a more traditional form of pop music, and I guess he may be called the king of lounge, and one might say that a king must have a throne, not a lounger. Or Burt Bacharach. There are so many different forms of pop, anyway, and one can go much further back in history of course. SInce the 50's at least POP music has been considered a genre and not just short for popular music. Some consider Thriller to be the nadir of modern pop which gives credence to him as the king of modern pop.
Of course it's all a bit silly.
Fripp winning this was a foregone conclusion.

I'll go with Fripp as the original King of prog. Wilson would be a contender for the modern Prince of Wales, I suppose. I would have liked some more choices, though. Gabriel, Anderson (Jon & Ian), Waters, Banks, and many others would be worthy contenders in a larger poll. Bring it on!

I agree. Robert Fripp would have a tough battle against Peter Gabriel, just to name someone.
Don't tell me this has been done before
Nice poll, and of the four choices Fripp is the obvious one.
I'll vote for him right now.

I love the great Steve Howe, and I wish him all the luck in the world in his bid for king. He'd make a great leader. But even I who grew up listening to and playing along with Howe, even I voted Fripp.

Why must my spell-checker continually underline the word "prog"?

I guess I'd vote for Fripp, even though I like Steve Howe better as a guitar player, but I don't know Wilson and Akerfeldt, so I won't vote. I think Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman should have been candidates as well.

Since this is modern and classic prog poll, if it had been me doing it, I would have included Toby Driver. And due to my biases, I would have included Christian Vander, Chris Cutler, Dave Stewart, Robert Wyatt, and Damo Suzuki. Mind you, I wouldn't think of asking this particular question, so it's a moot point. ;)

It's hard to beat Mr Fripp in this poll. The only person who could be closer to him and comes to my mind is Peter Gabriel.

This poll is RIGGED to get Fripp elected!!!! Where is Peter Gabriel? Where is Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson? Etc., etc., etc.

I think Bob ran away with this thread because of the competition. Casting no aspersions on the other contenders, I would point out that Mr. Fripp not only lead his group, but is one of the most prolific writers/thinkers on the topic of Prog. Additionally, he has launched/helped the careers of more fellow artists, he has established a teaching method, he has created a record label, he has triumphantly challenged the recording industry's modus operendi, and he has made himself relevent to the modern mindset thanks, in part, to the appreciation of Tool. Have any of the others done all of this while maintining a relevent career for more than 40 years? Fripp is a true Renaissance Man and, while the others are giants as well, they just haven't done it for as long as, or to the extent that Fripp has.

I actually see no reason why Fripp should be the king of prog, as much as I like him. Can somebody please explain?

No vote. I don't want to participate in a King of Prog election because there are some more potential candidates outside this selection and I don't know who is the one I'd vote for. The results are too predictible here. And whether Fripp is the rightful King I don't know, but Steven Wilson is the Crown Prince.

"Who is the heir apparent to Fripp's throne?" could make for an interesting discussion. But, too much procrastiposting for me, it's time to as much work done as the constant distractions of young children will allow.

is this a joke? Only Robert Fripp can attend at the title, i really like brave murder day yes but i don't really think Mikael Akerfeldt could be considered a king of prog. The same i say for the other two, porcupine and yes... mmm i think the title should go to Christian Vander, and like others said Daevid Allen would be the king's fool^^
in this case i will vote robert fripp of course.
