This is a poll that took all afternoon to make.  If you don't vote, I'll be crushed.  Cry

So vote, damn it.  Stern Smile

Anyway, here's how it works: I grouped relatively random (but mostly high rated) albums based on the dominant color of the cover artwork.  Each color group, therefore, is a mixed bag.  If you only got to enjoy the five albums listed, which would you choose?

White

Part the Second (maudlin of the Well)
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Genesis)
The Wall (Pink Floyd)
OK Computer (Radiohead)
The Snow Goose (Camel)

Yellow
Nursery Cryme (Genesis)
We’re Only in it For the Money (Frank Zappa)
Balletto di Bronzo, Il (Ys)
Rajaz (Camel)
Three of a Perfect Pair (King Crimson)

Orange
Kansas (Kansas)
Third (The Soft Machine)
Remedy Lane (Pain of Salvation)
Amputechture (The Mars Volta)
Dawn (Eloy)

Red
Discipline (King Crimson)
Still Life (Opeth)
In Praise of Learning (Henry Cow)
Suffocating the Bloom (Echolyn)
Quella Vecchia Locanda (Il Tempo Della Gioia)

Brown
Sleeping in Traffic Part II (Beardfish)
Signify (Porcupine Tree)
Second Life Syndrome (Riverside)
Songs from the Woods (Jethro Tull)
Still Life (Van der Graaf Generator)

Green
Close to the Edge (Yes)
Tales of Mystery and Imagination- Edgar Allen Poe (The Alan Parsons Project)
If I Could Do it All Over Again, I’d Do it All Over You (Caravan)
A Tab in the Ocean (Nektar)
The Missing Piece (Gentle Giant)

Blue
Fear of a Blank Planet (Porcupine Tree)
Ocean (Eloy)
Trespass (Genesis)
Phaedra (Tangerine Dream)
Tales from Topographic Oceans (Yes)

Violet
H to He Who Am the Only One (Van der Graaf Generator)
Moving Waves (Focus)
Ziltoid the Omniscient (Devin Townsend)
Spirals in Hyperspace (Ozric Tentacles)
Magnification (Yes)

Gray
Relayer (Yes)
Permanent Waves (Rush)
Blackwater Park (Opeth)
Minstrel in the Gallery (Jethro Tull)
Chupacabras (Phideaux Xavier)

Black
Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd)
Red (King Crimson)
Moving Pictures (Rush)
Godbluff (Van der Graf Generator)
The Hazards of Love (The Decemberists)

There's a weak spot in each group, but my vote went to yellow. I'd vote black in an instant, if only I would have heard HoL by now.

P.S. you should have put the "White" album in white, no? :)

Red, but I agree with Rico. Each group has at least one weak album.

Also, Red has two of my favorite albums ever, so that's enough for me. Big smile

I avoided using prog-related or proto-prog bands for fear that Dean would move my poll.

Blue - It's the only category where I have all of the albums listed.  Beyond that, most of them I rate highly.
Interesting poll!  I appreciate the effort you put into it, Epignosis.  Clap

Just for the record I don't move that many threads and to my knowledge I've never moved one of yours Rob - I just defend and support those decisions made by my fellow admins in the thread moving department.

Anyway ... black, grey or blue... it's down to that one weak album in each category to act as the decider - which one could I live with the most? ... okay Blue. Approve

Black is tied with White for me. Grey is the runner-up.

I need to think more about it...

How about Pink?

True, I didn't think of that.

I declare PINK to be the un-official colour of prog's greatest albums. Big smile

Other pinkies: PFM's "Stati di immaginazione", Bubu's Anabelas, "Boris" by Yezda Urfa, "Hatfied And The North", "Moving Waves" by Focus, etc.

I went for black, and obviously could, but won't, quibble over choices for the various colors.  As I always say in these things, of the albums listed...

That was tough but.... Yellow. It's the Zappa, Genesis, Crimson combination that clinched it.

A great poll indeed Clap. I put my dualistic shirt on: it's a choice between  Black and White for me.
I vote for White for the following reasons:
  • It's the only color from which I have all the albums.
  • Part the Second is the album I played most often during the last month.
  • At this moment, White is underrated compared to Black (4 against 13).

I feel probedConfused.  I damn near went with black because of the strong albums.  But then I thought how the Decemberists are right around the corner from annoying me to no end (just an opinion - it's getting to me).  So I went with Yellow, an interesting collection.

Put it this way, I could probably replay the first four albums in Black from my memory I know them so well, so I'm picturing being able to get along without them if it meant not having to hear the Decemberists get more and more annoying.

Cool poll.

Why must my spell-checker continually underline the word "prog"?

This is an interesting poll Robert Clap.

I voted blue.  With Phaedra, Ocean and particularly Tales From Topographic Oceans I simply had to.

I chose violet, though my own Who am the only one is blue...

Posted By: Snow Dog
Date Posted: July 02 2009 at 10:19
I assigned points for each album (If I didn't know it i point ws awrded)

1.Black      35
2.Grey        29
3.White      28
4.Blue        27
5.Brown       21
6.Red         20
7.Yellow     19
8.Green       15
9.Vilet           14
10.Orange     9

So Black wins it...just.

Edit. But I'm overiding it and going for Grey...it has Relayer and Permanent Waves.

How can there be so few votes for green?  4/5 of the albums are completely brilliant and the best albums their respective bands put out.  The Missing Piece isn't that good but 4/5 great albums still makes it the best overall choice on the list.
Though, I probably would have gone with pink had it been offered.
so, green followed by black and yellow

Went with "White" - some great albums there.  I would also add the Beatles White Album to the White listing - but maybe that is just proto-prog.  (BTW, I used to have the White Album on white vinyl, until it got accidentally cracked - what a shame...)

Minstrel is Gray? I thought it was brown...

White has The Wall and OK Computer, Purple has Ziltoid and He, but Black has Hazards of Love, Red and Godbluff, three albums of which I am quite fond. Dark Side sweetens the deal to some extent, and Moving Pictures is a necessary evil, but a tolerable one. Black it is. Just like...friggin' everyone else, crap.

I definitely ended up in the minority when I voted Yellow.  And as the days went by watching this I have a mounting feeling I should have gone with black or blue (both having top of the foodchain records, for instance "Red" and "TfTO").  What have I done??  I guess it's because I know very well every Yellow album.  Well, dig me but don't bury me.
