Why some popular shows weren't included:

House likes The Rolling Stones and Van Halen, and blues, so he's out. I bet he's a psychedelia fan from all the drug he takes.

The Wire plays gansta rap in many episodes, so it's out.

My vote is CSI: Miami. High-technology is always progressive for me, and Miami seems to have quite a few prog bands there?

Arrested Development easily. The humor in that show is so well crafted much like the music of prog. It goes over the head of many and requires multiple viewings to fully grasp everything in its entirety.

I think Malcolm in the Middle deserves a nod.

Agreed.

I think Lost is really prog-ish too, especially some of the fans and just how much they over-analyze everything in that show (me included). So that's where my vote went.

Shows like CSI:Miami, Star Trek: TNG; and Battlestar Galactica might fall under Neo-prog since they are derivative of their predecessors.  I never saw Arrested Development, but by the descriptions that I have read regarding it, it most closely follows the progressive banner as far as being really popular with its fan but basically unwatched and unknown by everyone else.  24 is probably also prog from the point of view of the "real" time aspect of the series, although as much as I enjoy it, 24 really isn't much more than a violent James Bond retread.  Stargate SG-1 is one of my favorite sci-fi programs but is still kind of a Star Trek follower.  I don't know Heroes so I can't say much on that.  Lost seems somewhat progressive too, although I haven't watched it either.  The X Files was quite progressive for its time period.  I've only seen the first season and a half, but from my readings on the show and what I have seen I think that this one will get my vote.

Until it fell up its own arse, X Files was truly groundbreaking and progressive. Still, at least it lasted about seven seasons until it went bad, unlike Heroes, which I utterly gave up on towards the end of last season. You could reduce that show to about five episodes a season without losing anything at all.

South Park, for a number of reasons.

1. It's contraversial. Because it's so directly offensive, yet pulled off in a clever and sophisticated way, lots of people either hate it or just don't get it. However, the fans are extremely loyal. Much like Prog.

2. It gets progressively more and more offensive and direct. The best example for me would be comparing the Pilot episode (Cartman Gets An Anal Probe) and the debut episode of season twelve (forgotten the name now). Cartman Gets and Anal Probe may sound pretty nasty, but in fact it just has lots of swearing and vulgarity. The latter, however, actually takes a massive risk in making fun of poverty sufferers in Nigeria. Bold move, yes, but they actually made it so if you thought for a second, they are actually making fun of the American government.

3. They take such a simple theme and blow it WAY out of proportion, even moreso than The Simpsons. This is, however, a very good thing. Much like Prog if you ask me.

I could name some more, but you get the idea...

I also should add, reading the above post, that you do need to watch an episode at three times before fully appreciating the political mockery involved.

Of the shows in that list, Arrested Development.  The Simpsons in it's prime was definitely a show that took chances and was consistently funny.  South Park definitely explores alot of territory.  Ren and Stimpy is another progressive cartoon show.

I'd consider the original Star Trek "prog" in how it included lots of social commentary but disguised it.  Also pushed new ground with the first interracial kiss on television.  The newer Treks are cool, but basically brought similar ideas to newer and younger audiences.

The mention of Malcolm In The Middle made me remember in one episode where the father was looking through records and mentioned King Crimson.

Edit: The biggest prog comedy may be Monty Python's Flying Circus.  I'm going to watch "And Now For Something Completely Different" tonight.

Other, but not known outside of Germany. "Raumpatrouille" ("Space Patrol"), a German sci-fi series with sadly only seven episodes. The series was from 1966 and still in black and white. It was very popular in Germany, and it has been rerun several times. The title melody was quite proggy already. But just listen for yourself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8RIV3xzffI - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8RIV3xzffI
The series has somewhat of a cult status in Germany. The interior of the spaceship was made from anything the designer team of the series could lay hand on; of special fame is the flat iron, which is the spaceship's main switch. You can see it in this little video excerpt from the series between 1:50 and 2:00.

24 was pretty prog when it came out, Twin Peaks as well, others include Kung Fu, MASH, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Roseanne, Twilight Zone

anyone remember James Burke's Connections ?

Twin Peaks was very kraut/electronic prog.

Monty Python was RIO a la Samla Mamma with hints of Canterbury.

Mash was Crossover.

South Park is Avant a la Mr. Bungle.

The Sopranos was RPI (the heavier side of it).

Star Trek was really Gong.

Lost. Complex writing, beautifully developed characters and wonderful use of flashbacks. Difficult to digest after a viewing or two but gripping as hell after multiple viewings

If CSI: Miami is prog, than I guess the dialogue is a cheesy keyboard solo that lasts for 45 minutes

Anything where the cinematography takes command of the overall feel of the show. Something where the tools involved are used as more than just tools. The writing doesn't have to make sense and often is overly complicated (Yes or Mars Volta) - but I think in this case it would be a show for people who make shows (like prog is music for people who make music, 9 times out of 10, or have a fetish for the art and technique that goes into it)

So... none of these.

^ Good post... so... let's equate our favourite directors with different prog genres! Big smile

Tarkovsky: electronic prog (very poetic, very linear), sometimes symphonic a la Camel, sometimes experimental and or post-rock.
Fellini: RPI, no question about it.
Bergman: eclectic a la King Crimson
Lynch: psychedelic
Almodovar: RPI, Crossover
Kubrick: Eclectic, sometimes Prog-Folk

LOL

Battlestar Galactica (ONLY the new series) is the most sophisticated and thoughfully crafted TV I've ever seen, so that takes my vote.

Although, if The Sopranos were on the list, that would get mine hands down...

I thought most japanese animation was childish , but this series changed my mind: Thought provoking ,  epic and no one knows about it  = prog.

From the fact that CSI received ZERO vote here, I think the PA community seems hostile towards popularity.

I mean, Lost and X-Files are also popular of course, but CSI was the most viewed drama for many years.

Just because prog is not popular, doesn't mean anything that is popular must not be prog.

Well, the 60's French TV show 'Les Compagnons de Baphomet' ('Baphomet's Companions') has a disquieting background, just like 'Belphegor' and, let's say it, a lot of Zeuhl bands.
But I wonder if the Klingons and the Goa-uld would understand Kobaļan? After all, some episodes of Star Trek: TNG could have an OST by Magma.
Makes me remember about the aborted version of Dune by Jodorowsky: he thought about Pink Floyd and Magma to make the music.

Anyway, I think House could be R.I.O.: this character knows how to nag people, just like the whole movement (in case someone misses it, I LOVE R.I.O., allright?)

Lost makes me think of a band taking influences from sympho-prog, prog-electronic, a bit of R.I.O.... and getting lost on stage because of too many solos and everyone improvising at the same time.
A good thing at the start, but I'm not sure the writers really know where to go and how to go.

By the way, I agree with the description of CSI:Miami as "a cheesy 45 minutes keyboard solo". That show is not really good. Plus, it's happening in Miami. Very bad. I said.

I find Ren and Stimpy rather progressive as well for some odd reason.

And, yes, I remember that episode of Malcolm in the Middle where they mentioned King Crimson. My friend called me up right away: King Crimson! They mentioned King Crimson on TV!

Lost. The show is very proggy and I also think it will fit in any fan-made music video to the sounds of Pink Floyd.

But remember to always relax to the sounds of young Ray Bennett trying to play Banks-like triplets in Small Begininngs.

I think I too would vote for the X Files, I have seasons 1-8 and I have rented( is that proper grammar?) 9, but it was nowhere near as good as the first 7 seasons. I have a lot of honorable mentions from this poll though, as well as all those awesome old scifi shows like The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, and Tales From the Darkside. I almost forgot Doctor Who.

Battlestar Gallactica (the newer version) very thought provoking and a mind blowing premise at the series end. Only bettered imho by Babylon 5. These two programs along with The X Files are my most proggiest moments on TV.
