Wonderful Swedish band whose sound ranges from Doom inspired Death Metal to Gothic/Depressive Rock. The band has been active since the early 90s and, quite frankly, I was surprised to find no thread on them already. Anyways, one of the most appealing aspects of their music is their catchy choruses. Blakkheim (a member of both Diabolical Masquerade and Bloodbath) has such a tasteful sense of melody. mmmm
Anyways, discuss. http://%20%20www.myspace.com/katatonia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIim3zXRDz4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIim3zXRDz4

I only have Discouraged Ones, but it's an excellent release. The stuff on their Myspace is great as well, so delicously bleak, and, as you say, very catchy without being annoying.

I've listened to Last Fair Deal Gone Down 4 times in the past couple of days. That album is really growing on me.

I do quite like Viva Emptiness and The Great Cold DIstance. There isn't a whole lot of variety in their song structures, though (at least in their recent works), so I have a tough time getting through full albums. They do however, sound awesome and they write good songs. My particular favorite is "Burn the Remembrance."

Any recommendations for similar bands?

I think Anathema can be quite similar, if only for the fact they started as Doom and slowly turned into a much more melodic/'soft' band, although katatonias 'soft' side is still pretty heavy Both great bands though, and Mikael Akerfeldt growling on one of their albums = instant respect

Opeth, Anathema, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost are the four generally associated with them (they were all Peaceville artists at one time or other)

Ok, thank you both, but I'm well familiar with those and I'd be more interested in newer/less well-known acts (I should have specified that earlier).

^ Then Sentenced would also be too well known I assume
Beseech, To/Die/For or Draconian wwould be my next guess.

I recommend Dark Suns - I've listened to two of their albums - Existence - 2005 and Grave Human Genuine - 2008. I think one could consider Katatonia, Anathema and Opeth as their influences; nevertheless, these guys are pretty original IMO.

Maybe it's because I place Dance of December Souls on some sort of mythical pedestal, but I simply could never bite into their depressive rock phase, even Brave Murder Day sounded so bland and generic after DoDS. One band I can think of which went from doom to depressive and succeeded in impressing me more or less equally in both phases is Gathering and they are on PA too.

I prefer Katatonia's later output. The choruses are just too damn catchy.
