Well, in baseball, Sammy Sosa's been outed. I think it's time to release the list of musicians who were using steroids during the classic era of prog. Let's face it, a lot of these guys suffered a great decline in productivity/quality after, say, 1980, and were yet during their prime so far above any other musicians as to boggle the mind. Certainly there was not a level playing field. Certainly ELP could not have been that much better than Jo Jo Gunne, which of course had a member of Spirit who presumably was not juicing. We're going to have to reserve judgement on Mouth & MacNeal and Argent until further information is available, but both are suspicious.
Perhaps the 'roids were responsible for the decline of ELP, Genesis, Yes, and many others. And also could explain the ascendancy of Metallica, Nirvana, and many other bands who were not subject to testing at the time, being young and not yet in the majors.
And just perhaps, Crimson started juicing a bit late, around 1980. They were clean up until then, but how was it they managed to transition to the '80s? Maybe a little HGH? Fripp plays a little faster, Belew (free of the Zappa constriction against drugs) decides to go for it?

Steroids in prog? Hmmmm... I always thought the guys were getting high with either cocaïne (rather a thing for glam-rock bands) or plain reality (which would explain Abacab or Big Generator). |
