Keith is a very good keyboard, piano player maybe the best in the 70's(although Tony is MY favorite). However soloing too much , which many including myself may enjoy,  is a bit hard for the rest of the band.So as far as bass or drum solos are not that very exciting for an audience as a keys solo he was in the difficult position of doing clownish thing with knives, fire, beasts, dinosaurs, whatever which on the one hand are fun but on the other hand show an ego too big for a band, imagine how big it was for a trio of really great musicians!!! So i believe he is responsible for the hatred.

And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
Spiral out. Keep going.

Could it have been from losing all that money during the 1977 Works orchestra tour?

I'm not sure they hate each other.

Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why... (D. Gilmour)

Who says they hate each other?

This is the worst poll ever.

Nobody in ELP has an ego TOO BIG. They all have ego's of the correct proportion.

If only I had the power to close this poll.

Penis envy? Or does that only work with women?

Perhaps it's not Keith's ego that is too big. Wink

I haven't got the energy to vote in this. Who says they hate each other? I would agree if people said that egos got in the way of normal relationships, but you could say that about a number of bands, i.e. The Who - Townsend drove Daltrey round the bend, but they do genuinely love and respect each other, and I have never seen any interview in all the years I have followed prog where Emerson, Lake, or Palmer have said they hate each other.

Now if you were talking about Gilmour and Waters, that would be differentWink But even those two have buried the hatchet in a mutually respectful kind of way (eventually)

Sadly prior to the days of corporate sponsorship.

I agree with Zargus that both Greg and Keith's egos are too big ...... but Keith's a biker and so am I, so I decided to put the blame on Greg's ego!

.............. Greg's not a biker as well, is he?! Embarrassed

I don't think they hate each other, but Keith's ego is reputedly too big: I have read that Dave O'List had to leave The Nice because Keith could not stand another soloist beside him.

The same reason why I prefer Rick Wakeman over Keith Emerson - Keith turned into a rockstar.

Other reason: they just need a full-time guitarist, so they could have a true ego conflict (how any guitarist does it take to change a lightbulb?...)
