Subject: What's with those avatars ?
Date Posted: May 31 2009 at 04:31
I'm usually not that active in this section, but now that I'm here I think I'll launch this one right now.
Sometimes I get curious with those avatars. I noticed there are roughly three (or four) categories:
1. Those chosen out of the possibilities presented by PA
2. Those chosen from one's favorite albums
3. An intriguing picture or painting of ... you tell me, I haven't got a clue
4. one's favorite animal or something.
The category I'm interested in right now is no.3. I will give some examples to explain it some more:
I always wondered the drawings of El Bothy, Slartibartfast, Fuxi, Menswear and mr. Progfreak for instance: what are they ??? I mean, do these collaborators look like those pictures, are they cartoon heroes or what ?
But also the avatars of Atkingani, Alitare, Clarke2001, Epignosis. Liquideternity, Obiter and CCVP, I mean who are these guys ? Maybe in some cases I don't know my classics no doubt but I really want to know where these avatars come from and what or who they represent ?
Anybody knows the answer(s) ?

From what I personally know:
ProgFreak created his own Simpsons avatar (right?) The character in Menswear's avatar is Nelson from The Simpsons (how can one possibly not know Nelson, ha-ha! ). El bothy has "Stalin" Beaker in his avatar. Slartibartfast's drawing is probably his own, though I could be wrong.
Atkingani's got some sort of national figure, but I forgot who it is. Alitare has Nietzsche in his avatar. Epignosis has Skeletor in his avatar.

They have a nice avatar creator there ... and I just used it to adapt my avatar to the new size (120px).

I've mentioned this before, mine is taken from an American Greetings make your own card program. I customized the image to look like me and this version was used as part of the cake topper at our wedding. The hair and beard colors were cloned over from an actual photograph. Totally custom dude.

Atkingani's avatar is a Brazilian historical character called Tiradentes, if my memory serves me right... Mine, of course, is one of my favourite albums from one of my favourite bands (Blue Oyster Cult's Fire of Unknown Origin). However, even if I love the album, the main reason I chose it is because I love the artwork, especially the colours. I have had cats as my avatar in the past, but now I'd rather have them as a signature.

More specifically, my avatar is Skeletor from the live action movie that came out in 1987 that was a poor and laughable rip off of the Star Wars franchise.
However, Frank Langella, one of my favorite "little known" actors, did an absolutely kick-ass job playing the villain. He was terrifying and no-nonsense in a movie based largely on cheesiness and comic relief.
In similar news, there is supposed to be a new Masters of the Universe coming out in 2011 called Grayskull, which is supposed to reflect the adulthood of its original audience...in other words, there will be blood. PG-13 ftw.
Also clarke2001's avatar is Thusla Doom, played by James Earl Jones, from the movie Conan: The Barbarian.

Mine's definitely #3. I had a Mikael Akerfeldt one for a long time (the picture that's found in his Wikipedia article I believe) but changed it after Mike/King By-Tor suggested I change it to a bird with teeth. Luke/Evolutionary Sleeper showed me the one I currently have though and I liked it more than the one Mike gave me, so I changed it.
I might have to use a different bird with teeth soon though...

Mine is a Homo erectus.
I found the pic for the first time about a year ago. We were regular editors of the Hungarian Wikipedia with my brother and there was a very tiresome 13-year-old girl who always spammed her user page with "cute" pictures. One of those ("Cuki.jpg" = "Cutie.jpg"), which was also used in her signature, was deleted because of the copyright laws, but the red link remained at the place of the old pic. We decided to upload this very cute guy with that file name – the result was more than funny

Mine, obviously, is a pantagram with Baphomet on it. A pagan idol of unknown origin, it has come to represent Satan as one of the demons in the Hierarchy of Hell....
No, I don't look like a goat. Nor am I a Satanist (though I have read LaVey's Bible, thank you Henry Plainview your signature is great ). It is a good way of saying, though, "I'm no friend of religion". Note: that doesn't mean I can't be a friend of religious people. Many of my friends actually are believers.
Besides, the avatar goes perfectly with a metal fan.
I guess I just love a little bit of shock. Few people would experience such ridiculous shock, though.

Mine is a piano player, obviously, they keys being my favourite instrument, and me myself being a piano and synth player. My nick Moogtron speaks to itself, but actually I like piano and organ just as much as moogs and trons and other 'musical boxes'.
I found the drawing somewhere on the Internet, and I wouldn't be able to find it back again, to be honest, where it came from.
I like it because it's arty, it reminds me of The Blues Brothers, but the paleness of the piano player's face gives an extra arty feeling to it, in some way.
Plus, I like the colours.

I am the Catfish Man
When I first thought about getting a decent avatar I was very much into Spock's Beard, specifically "The Light" and decided that I should take on the persona of 'The Catfish Man'.
I commissioned an artwork from my buddy Doc. I asked him to draw a representation of me as a catfish and voila. I may play around with the background sometime, you know, The Catfish Man in France, The Catfish Man cheering the Penguins on to a Stanley Cup win tonight . . .
For those that are interested, more of his work can be found at

I haven´t really found one I´m sattisfied with yet, so I change it like I change my socks. Right now it´s the cover to one of the filthiest grindcore albums I´ve heard in a while Cretin´s Freakery. Just love that cover artwork. Really damn mean. Reminds me of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or something like that. And what can I say I´m a giant horror movie fan. ( I might change it later today if I see fit so I´ve pasted the picture in for keepers)

Texas Chain Saw Massacre is great ! I saw the original from 1974 a long time ago. Made me .
Did you see Deliverance (1972) ? and Wrong Turn (2003) ? I like those American bush movies !
Zombi II (1979) was also very nice.

Mine's http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3173 - Igor Wakhevitch . One of the two coolest most rockin' musique concrete / electro acoustic composer ever. Just click on the link and listen to Materia Prima from Docteur Faust (then the rest).
I'm a big fan, but I use the image as my avatar because he looks so damn cool sitting there with his hawk.

The Stanley Cup is no more. Mine is now the logo for the Detroit Tigers, my local Major League baseball team and the place where my money that isn't spent on prog goes.

Nice axe, A B Negative.
As for mine, first, I just like the picture, but after I chose it I realized that it could symbolize the rising of the creative spirit out of the waters of the subconscious. Or something like that. Also, the guitar is not unlike my own Strat, and I find the moon unutterably, ineffably beautiful at times, especially when rising through the trees.

VERY cool avatar there. It gives a strong impression about you, though I imagine you don't look like that at all. It's just that the imagine fits your ways.
It also fits the description you made to a untitled photo of The Decemberists some time ago

I really thought it was you with that hawk, Rocktopus !
Are there any avatars that are actually the members themselves ? Maybe CCVP ? or is that another famous person ?

Mine is Baikinman, the villain from the superb Japanese kiddies' comic ANPANMAN, in which all characters are named after things you can buy in a (Japanese) bakery, or the people who work there:

P.S. For those too lazy to check out wikipedia, I should add that Baikinman literally means "Germ Man". Since he is a villain, one of the things he likes to do is to spread evil germs! After each of his misdeeds, he flies away crowing (in a sinister voice): "Bye bye kin!" (A pun on his own name.) Most of the leading characters in the Anpanman comic are (bakery-related!) superheroes who fly through the air and wear capes. Baikinman has a black cape, which is not visible in my avatar. I got to know Anpanman when our daughters were going to a nursery in Japan. The comic is still wildly popular among Japanese 3 - 5 year olds.

I play a Strat and couldn't see the guitar for a good while. I was under the impression that it was a man standing there, his head sort of bowed, wearing a striped shirt, with very straight legs...
And I suppose pins sticking out of his back.
