In my opinion, the metal genre not only holds the flag for the best music, but some of the best cover art. Not to put down Roger Dean, but some of the modern metal covers are beyond beleif. Anyways, post some of your favorites.
And of course...

Strangely, enough, "United Abominations" was done by someone from DeviantArt. Go figure.

Black Metal covers tend to have a very gloomy, depressing feel to them. And in a great way, too.

modern metal does have the most intricate covers, some on a par with the classic psych posters of the 60s, though it's in danger of becoming common now as 90% of contemporary metal has the same kind of gnarled illustrations and illegible titles

Look up a fella named Dan Seagrave. He did some fantastic death metal sleeves in the late '80s to early '90s, starting with Morbid Angel's Altars Of Madness.

There is quite a good compilation of dark artwork
from several bands (some of them included in PA).
It may be worth checking

Nothing will ever beat Turn Loose the Swans IMO, but the cover artwork for the new one is absolutely stunning I agree.

I dislike a lot of what has been posted, but some are very good (like the above). I especially like the covers that don't try to look like metal album covers (like the above).

Personally, I hate most modern computer-drawn metal album covers. Give me the hand-painted stuff any day. (Same goes for prog album covers.)
Utterly evil.
Okay, not actually a metal album...I know! Still, love the mysteriousness of this cover.
I don't care if it's filled with Orcs, I want to live here.

Some classics:
Metallica- Master of Puppets
King Diamond- Them
Slayer- South of Heaven
I'll add more when I can think of them. Most of my metal albums are at my parent's house, and my memory is failing me.

This is the only cover that made me buy the album without ever hearing of the band or any of their music, way back in the hazy days of 1981.

Surprised not to see any cannibal corpse on here. Don't think album covers get any more metal than that. (On second thought, it might make this thread rather NSFW )

Most metal album covers? Sure. But they are freakin' horrible abominations which should only be regarded with pure hatred, condescension and much smashing with a hammer.
Also, the band sucks.
