I am a new member here on the forums but have visited the site for years. I've been a PROGHEAD for about 35 of my 47 years, but most recently gotten into some of the harder edged stuff. Even some including growl/screaming vocals. I know what most of you Symphonic Proggers like me are gonna say. But if you don't at least check out bands like Opeth-you'll regret it later. They are not only incredibly talented musicians, but songwritiers, and performers too. And you won't find a more professional and discip[lined band that has struggled for years, and its actually paid off, to their pure metal fans, and the proggers, when leader Mikael Akerfeldt started using his apprecciation for prog more and more in Opeth's music.2003"s "Damnation" produced by Steven Wilson is the only Opeth record with all clean vocals and very proggy musically.2005's Ghost Reveries and their latest Watershed also have plenty for the prog lover. I am now a full blown Opeth fan after seeing them live for the first time last week. i was totally blown away. How Akerfeldt goes back and forth from growls to clean(and really good)vocals-you have to see and hear to believe. The sound, lights, venue, everything was top notch-this is a class act Sweedish black metal/progressive metal/scandavanian folk/jazz avant garde/prog band! check em out!

Never heard of them. Metal you say? I've always assumed that metal was just a bunch of screamers, but you've put everything in a new perspective for me.

^Sorry, couldn't resist.
Yeah, Opeth is pretty much the most popular band that is completely metal here. Ghost Reveries, Still Life, and Blackwater Park are all in the top 100 albums here.

Look at me, I'm Mikael Åkerfeldt!! *plays clashing blues riffs and sings about how very sad I am*
[/light-hearted teasing post]
But in all seriousness, this band has chops and Mikael is a great vocalist. Music isn't quite melodic or indie enough for me, though.

I really hate party pooping. This place isn't that funny in the first place and doesn't need to be turned into a soulless machine by party pooping. Don't ruin the fun please next time Cacho

Welcome to PA......home to Dream Theater, Opeth, and a few Genesis fanboys. You'll fit right in.

I was quite quick with the death growls. I guess it kinda tracks my passage into metal - the first stuff which could be classed as metal I heard was DragonForce (flame me all you like :P), which then evolved towards other bands (Sabbath, DT, Ayreon, Gallery).
Then, in comes Metallica, which started to get me into more "exotic" vocals (they're not really growls but they can just be generally louder/more moody), then a bit of Riverside, then soon my friends are reccomending me heavier and heavier stuff. Opeth was inevitable. Got into them in the space of 2 weeks, now I love these growls :P

My 39th birthday will be in 25 days and I also love Opeth all their albums are superbly great. My favorites are Still Life, Damnation, deliverence, Black Water Park and their last.. I really can't believe that i really got into them. Growing up in a Catholic and Christian home, this type of music specially Death Metal wasn't totally allow and un Godly. In other words Satanic music. I still don't play their music when the family is around. Well, most Metal bands were and maybe that was the reason I didn't get into metal in the 80's as a teen.I remember the first time I heard Opeth's Deliverance I really liked the album, but the lyrics and Mike's vocals scared the hell out of me and it was very disturbing. Until I heard Damnation I was totally embraced and convinced that Opeth was a very special and incredibly talent band. I stopped judging their songs lyrics. It took about 2 years to really enjoy and praised Mike growls. I really liked everything else except his vocals. I also saw them live last winter and they were incredibly awesome live. Now I think Opeth are one of the most original bands out there. As Gentle Giants were in the 70's. This past Saturday I bought my first Opeth T. Shirt. Can you believe it? If you were to tell me that in 2009 I was going to wear a fan T.shirt of a Metal band? I would say that you are totally insane.

Other than Ghost Reveries there's nothing the least bit satanic about Opeth's music.

I think he was reffereing to the stereotype that all bands with harsh vocals are "satanic". My Mom thinks so too, and it's extremely aggravating! She tried banning the music from the house, but the effort was futile, and now basically 90% of the metal I listen to invoves screaming of some sort.
Opeth kind of opened the doors for me as far as extreme metal goes, but I'm really not much of a fan. Like most progressive groups, they've put themselves in a point of no return, where every song and album follows a trend or formula. Heavy, soft, heavy, soft, heavy soft. It would be nice if they were to experiment more, or try something new with the instrumentation... but I dont think it will happen.

Well I am not to that level yet of playing it while they are around. I guess I never will. becuase for the past 20 years I had never played real early pink floyd music and avant garde songs from John Coltrane or Ornette Coleman when my family is around.

Ah the mighty Opeth, my fave band... glad theres a fair bit of appreciation for them on this forum despite the growls (which I personally enjoy) as they thoroughly deserve it in my humble opinion

I can't claim to be a big fan of Opeth, but I do enjoy some of their music. They are in the category of music that kind of "fills out" my musical collection. I tend to listen to some overly similar bands, so when I have the urge for something different, they're one way to go. I can't claim to really "like" the growling yet, but I can tolerate them now, and I think Ackerfeldt has wonderful clean vocals.
My preferred Opeth album is Still Life, and I like their softer album Damnation. My other favorite songs are Bleak and The Leper Affinity(cool song name too!) off of Blackwater Park.
