Watched AI last night for the first time this year.  One of those guys has quite the set of pipes and did a creditable version of the old song, A Change Is Gonna Come.  I'm assuming this is the correct forum (Topics not related to music...) to make this observation LOL

Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

Obviously, the really talented guy didn't win...

Obviously, many proggers will tear down their clothes before recognizing any talent in a contestant in American Idol...

Yeah, now I see he lost.  I'm no fan of AI, but here was a guy who could flat out sing.  Maybe losing is a good thing in this case, and he won't get railroaded into a bunch of pop crap as seems to befall the winners.  He's got some good vocal chops.

Runner up gets the better deal- that's how it has always been.

the finale is on in front of me right now... one of the disadvantages of visiting the folks...

I think the phenomenon of the runner up ending up better off than the winner is fascinating, given the nature of the show.

can anybody name one successful artist from that show, sans Kelly Clarkson?

Carrie Underwood has done quite well for herself, in the C&W world, from what I've seen.  Not sure if she was the winner that year, whichever it was.  I don't pay much attention, but Wife usually has it on, not so much this year so I hadn't heard them.

Actually, Carrie Underwood is probably one of the best selling country artists out there right now.

I actually think Daughtry is the real deal. The man has a stunning voice and a commanding stage presence. Probably the best artist AI has ever had.

As for tonight's show, my sister came over and watched it with my wife and I caught bits and pieces. Some parts were quite....um...disturbing. I thought the duet between the eventual winner and Keith Urban was pretty good, though.

Clay Aiken. Kelly Clarkson didn't even do well until she dropped the American Idol image for the dirty popstar look, so I would call Clay the only true success by the narrow definition of the show. But there's also Carrie Underwood, and Daughtry sold a million copies of his debut album, which apparently makes it the fastest selling debut album since 1991. David Cook sold a million copies of his debut album too and had 11 songs on the Billboard 100, which is a lot. Fantasia is on Broadway in The Color Purple. And Jennifer Hudson got an Oscar for Dream Girls.

Thank you Wikipedia for allowing me to rain useless information on this thread using only the memory fragments I have from the mass media.

Many AI people (winners and non-winners) have done very well, but there's also a lot of winners who have gone bust in spectacular style.

Let me see. A vote for the wholesome fundamental christian with the beautiful wife or the evil, buggering homosexual who leads a life full of sin and debauchery.

It only goes to show that even in a supposed  talent show, that image wins out against perhaps the most talented person i have witnessed on this show ever.

I mean please, you have Donald Duck with a lisp or someone who could blow the pants off of even Freddie Mercury.

Carry On Your Wayward Son was done once. Simon called it an indulgent song. I guess he's not fond of prog.

I remember him saying the instrumental bit went on too long...that's why a true American Idol ought to play an instrument very well also.

Why do we need to make this a left vs. right argument? I thought both were talented and the runner up (forget his name) had the better voice. For me, he seems like such a niche artist and I think the viewers like somebody who seems like the 'every day guy'.

And I think Daughtry blows both of them away. I'm not an AI fan, but that guy really had a tremendous stage presence about him.

No, I was trying to make a gay vs. fundamental christian actually. You're the 1st to accuse me of being left wing.LOL

Greg, I wasn't accusing anyone of anything. Sorry if it came across that way. I heard the same argument on the news this morning. We're good.
