I've been watching alot of Studio Ghibli's films recently and generally find them stunning. I know there are several other fans on here (seem to remember Stonie doing a Miyazaki poll a few years ago, not that I can find it with this search ehgine) and was wondering whats everyones favourite? I've deliberatly left off the newest one, Ponyo on a Cliff, as its only had a Japanese and Korean release so far.

I voted for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

By coincidence I was just in the middle of a Miyazaki marathon. As always, it starts with Spirited Away, his first film I ever saw. What a stunning masterpiece! I love it so much.

Porco Rosso for me, although I could just as easily have chosen Spirited Away, Nausicaä, Grave of the Fireflies or Howl's Moving Castle. All brilliant movies which outshine anything Pixar has done by a million miles, imo.

^ You think so? Hmm. Finding Nemo is one of my all time favourite films. Even Miyazaki's a great fan of Pixar. He even pays them a nice tribute in Spirited Away.

Yes. Don't get me wrong - I don't hate Pixar as such. Most of their films have been rather enjoyable, but to me they lack the imagination, humanity and magic of Studio Ghibli. I suppose the difference lies in the fact that while I can still watch Miyazaki's films in complete awe, Pixar lacks this depth, imo. They're a bit too children's movies for me, I think.

Mind you, not all Studio Ghibli films are pure gold either. I might get stoned for this, but I thought My Neighbor Totoro didn't have a whole lot going for itself apart from the character Totoro. Embarrassed

I'm going to go with Spirited Away, even though Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle are very close.

Some friends and I have been watching some of these films on weekends, and so far my favorite (and the one to get my vote) was Spirited Away.  The characters were very well constructed, the plot was great, and the movie left me with a good feeling.  I must say, though, I was hoping that somehow she would have chosen to stay in the spirit world...that's probably what I would have done. Tongue

Nausicaä probably; it has that special... something (like all Hayao Miyazaki movies, but this one has gotten an extra doze of... something).

My Neighbor Totoro is my favourite Ghibli film! I know it's less "arty" than some of the studio's more recent output, but it so happens that I lived in Japan from 1985 to 1996... On the edge of a typical countryside village... I got to know the movie in its original Japanese version (undoubtedly more convincing than the English redub), thanks to our children, who grew up with it... And ever since, it's been the Perfect Summertime Film Experience! To tell you the truth, our daughters watched it again (and LOVED it) just the other night, even though they're now between 16 and 20 years old. The whole film is pure nostalgia for a typically Japanese countryside childhood. Delightful!

Agreed. I think a lot of it is down to the fact that the world Miyazaki created has the greatest depth. It also helps that Miyazaki himself wrote the manga the film is based on, so it's his creation through and through.

My 3 favourite Ghibli films each offer something very different. Nausicaa is the kind of epic Miyazaki does so brilliantly; Grave of the Fireflies is extremely moving, much darker departure from the average Ghibli film; and The Cat Returns is just plain delightful, appealing to my inner child and love of cats.

I guess I'll be the first to vote for "Laputa- The Castle in the Sky."  While I know that "Spirited Away" is the most well-made and thoughtful film, I got the most enjoyment from "Laputa."  (Both films are 5-star masterpieces, either way.)  The perfect fantasy film, and such a beautiful story about friendship.

Never mind, Spirited Away is the best.  One of the best movies all of time.

I have to vote for Grave of the Fireflies, despite a great love for many more ... Grave is a movie that I show everyone I get the chance, even if they don't like anime, because it is so moving and touching. It transcends its medium, and while I would say a couple other Ghibli movies do as well (Spirited Away, Mononoke,...), I think this one is the most successful.

^ very nice version of such a fun song.  I often sing "To-toro, To-toro".

Not sure why I never voted in this poll as I love Studio Ghibli films.   Grave of the Fireflies (one of my absolute favourite animated films along with When the Wind Blows, Fantastic Planet, and Watership Down)  followed by the amazing Spirited Away.  Spirited Away is my daughter's favourite film, and Hiyao Miyazkai is her favourite director, and I'm so glad she appreciates it (my wife had told me not to show it to her, she was five then, because the images might scare her, but I insisted).  Ponyo was fun too.

Thanks.  And I forgot that after I took it out it was my daughter who insisted on seeing it (had her watch the trailer first).

Miyazaki films are great for families to watch, I think -- even the darker ones.  And it's also good when one can have ones kids watch the subtitled versions to encourage them to read.  I prefer watching the films in Japanese with English subtitles since my Japanese is quite broken.  I don't really like some of the Disney changes to the dialogue/ characters and even music (regarding music, for instance, they totalled changed a song in Kiki's Delivery Service, and the Disney choice does not fit nearly so well).

Only Yesterday tied with Nausicaa. Since Only Yesterday has no votes, I'll go ahead and give it one.

I did a little Miazaki fest the other week, rewatched Nausicca, The Cat Returns and Ponyo. Tough choice as they're all amazing. They also range from "magical" (see Totoro, Ponyo, Kiki) to "epic" (see Nausicca, Mononoke, Moving Castle) and various combinations of each extreme (and I have my favorites in all categories). I don't know if I could pick JUST ONE movie of them all, but if I did it would probably have to be Nausicaa.

I quite agree.  Disney's dubs aren't terrible, but something is lost in translation.  Often when they redo the songs, the result is just bad.  I also hated Disney's voice actor for Chihiro in Spirited Away; it almost ruined the movie for me.  However, when I watched the film in Japanese, I could enjoy the film without any quandaries.  To me, Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro are flawless films that shouldn't be tampered with.  One exception might be Fox's dub of My Neighbor Totoro, but that's mainly for sentimental reasons.  Also, here's a fun fact if you like gaming: the voice of the father (Shigesato Itoi) is the creator of the RPG series Mother (or Earthbound in the English-speaking countries).  As you can tell, I am quite a fan.

I saw Princess Mononoke with an English dub and it was OK, but much improved later when I saw it in Japanese. Howl's Moving Castle had a brilliant English cast, Christian Bale was superb as Howl. I could say that it was at the same level as the original dub.

No singing in those two, though. LOL

Totoro has the catchiest theme song, but my overall vote goes to Porco Rosso. One of the best animated films ever made.
