What kind of music is he making these days? I went chronologically but got bored in the 80s. Has he like so many other prog artists starting making really strong albums once more (after a middling period throughout that infamous decade of general musical mediocrity)? If so, where should I look? What's his best release, say, post-Black Box or Enter K?

I really like Singularity and Incoherence myself. His music is always taking on new forms. He's also still experimenting. I think you maybe pleasantly surprised with Incoherence and Singularity. I also believe Clutch is good too. I need to listen to this one though. -------------

How progressive are we talking here? Aside from some of his stuff on Over and Fool's Mate, I haven't had much luck getting into his balladry, to be honest. Maybe I've just listened to the wrong stuff of his. I only have his first six and A Black Box. How do you recommend this fellow here to dive further into his insanely huge world? Hey, I did fine with Frank Zappa, surely I can handle Petey...

His last two albums are much more experimental and more "progressive". Visit the MySpace page I posted and check out some of his tracks from Singularity (and other albums). Although you may not find it to your liking, I also highly recommend "Veracious" which is an album of his more modern material played live. It is just Hammill on guitar or piano with the wonderful assistance of Stuart Gordon on violin. His work with The K Group is more band-orientated too, so you may enjoy that. -------------

Ah, thanks. I'm also drawn to This and Fireships. Maybe the Roaring Forties, though that one doesn't seem to stand out in terms of ratings. I'll check that stuff out, if I can find any good samples anywhere. His progarchives samples are a bit, erm, 70s-stacked.

Well I was reading the Wiki articles for the last three of his albums. The general consensus is that Singularity is his best work since the 1980s and huge return to form. I think his return to form started with Clutch. Fireships is also apparently a good release. -------------

| @LiquidEternity: You might find PH to be a bit different from Zappa to get into, because whereas FZ covered a miriad of styles, PH isn't really that diverse. In the end it probably either comes down to liking his music or not. |

Liquid Eternity: Roaring Forties has "A Headlong Stretch" on it, which is pretty proggy (very long tune with different sections, weird time signatures, etc).
I would have to respectfully disagree. PH has done everything from ballads to musique concrete to punk to love songs to full-on prog to heavy metal to pure pop... and all points in between! One major difference between Zappa and Hammill is The Voice. When you hear Zappa sing, you know it's Zappa. Hammill can sound like four different people on any four given songs (i.e., the voice on "Afterwards" sounds like a completely different singer than the voice on "Arrow", which sounds completely different than "After The Show", etc etc etc) ------------- jc |

I was more drawing the connection to the size of their discographies and not necessarily the range. Either way, both have done a lot in a lot of genres. I'll probably put Singularity at the top of my considerations list. Roaring Forties looks like a little bastion of prog in the midst of a lot of singer songwriter stuff, but the overall poor ratings it has make me a bit nervous... -------------

I like the 70's stuff very very much. Also his records from 90-00 era are excellent. But 80's Hammill era is a huge abyss for me. Something like this: -------70's--------_____80's_____--------90's------------------00-------------etc. I'm a little scared of 80's.  Any favourite albums from that era?Lately I have been listening to Fall of the house of the Usher and wow!!! I wish there would be more albums like that in the world. |

Any word on what this album is going to sound like? I've been trying to check out some of his more modern stuff. Incoherence is great! But Singularity seemed a bit weak to me, I think. Is this just "an album by Peter Hammill," and everything else is left up to be a surprise?

Never mind. I preordered it through Burning Shed. Should be here next week, perhaps the one after. Looks exciting! I hope it's as good as Incoherence, though I only got to hear that one once. I should find that online sometime soon... -------------

Well, it apparently is pretty out. I just got an email saying mine is "in the post." I like ordering from British sites. They put things in "the post." It always makes me feel like they don't have mailboxes, just the posts that they're supposed to stand on, and that's where they stash the mail... Anyways. I submitted the album to PA using the information from Burningshed, so you can look at it if you want. -------------
