Isn't the side-long epic really what helps to define prog and distinguish it from other genres...?

Which is your favorite? (the poll would only allow 25 choises, so of corse some epics are lacking)

I choose Magma - Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh, truly a great piece of music.

Close to the Edge, although Gates of Delirium, 2112, Tarkus, and Karn Evil 9 are all close behind.

I'm torn between Close to the Edge/Echoes/Atom Heart Mother... But, in the end, the high pitched PING always wins.

  1. Hamburger Concerto - The finest prog composition ever !
  2. Force Majeure - The most "breathtaking" composition of all times.
  3. Echoes - Pink Floyds best tune.

What a difficult choice...

Genesis - Supper's Ready
Yes - Close to the Edge
Pink Floyd - Echoes
Magma - MDK / Kohntarkosz
Van Der Graaf - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

I think I'll have to go with Supper's Ready here, although I could very easily go with the much overlooked Movin On' by Circus

Close to the Edge

Thick as a Brick is super badass though, right behind it. And maybe Echoes after that, although i prefer shine on your crazy diamond to echoes

After that I'd go for Tarkus

Not much I don't like on this poll, although Nous Sommes Du Soleil leaves me cold every time. I went for Riah Salitaahk because it was the most unexpected entry by my all time favourite band. The interplay between clarinet, bass clarinet and vocals is spellbinding. Other Zeuhl epics worthy of inclusion would be Theusz Hamtaahk and Kontarkosz, and of course De Futura and Univers Zero's Le Faulx.

Good poll, most of the good ones I know are here.

Yes is my favourite of the early seventies, so I choose Magma's Mekanik Destruktiw Kommander

I'm not familliar with all Magma's work, and I do not know which song is which most of the time, but their music is great.

Some of the current days epics are very good too.

I like Arena's long songs and IQ's to be rewarding aswell. also Fish's Plague of ghosts is good also.

From the earlier progressive days

1. Gates Of Delerium - Yes
2. Mekanik - Magma
3. CTTE - Yes
4. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull
5. Echoes - Pink Floyd
6. Supper's Ready - Genesis
7. Song of Sheherezade - Rennaisance
8. The Snow Goose - Camel (I always listen it as 1 big song, maybe not really an epic though)
9. The Lighthouse Keeper - Klaatu (side two of Hope)
10. Lizard - King Crimson

Glad to see someone vote for Rïah Sahïltaahk, I honestly didn't expect that, great epic, but not quite up there with MDK. I've recently spent a LOT of money buying the original French vinyl of 1001 Degrees Centigrades, and was compelled to this fantastic piece of music right away..

I missed plenty, but due to the limit of 25 entries it's not possible to include every single epic, but I probably should have included "Song of Sheherezade" and "The Snow Goose" but that would of course require exclusion of 2 of epics in the poll...

Definately 2112! The Overture hits me so hard everytime. After that I'd go with Close To The Edge, Echoes, Thick As A Brick, and probably Dream Theater's "A Change Of Seasons". Would Kansas's "Magnum Opus" be considered an epic? If so, that'd definately make the list too.

  • Supper's Ready

Close To The Edge - Yes
Echoes - Floyd
Dogs - Floyd
Hemispheres - Rush
2112 - Rush
Supper's Ready - Genesis
Awaken - Yes
Nine Feet Underground - Caravan
The Ikon - Utopia
Karn Evil 9 - ELP
Shine On... - Floyd
Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull
Tarkus - ELP

Of those, Close To The Edge edges the others out (for me).

VDGG's Plague. Nothing beats it in emotional depth! And to me an epic is not perfect if it doen't have quiet, mysterious, atmospheric parts (compare "presence of the night" in this one).

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly is pretty good.  May even be a bit progressive, I also enjoy "Slightly  All the Time" by Soft Machine.

At 15 something minutes "Interior Lulu" from marillion.com may or may not be an epic song (but length isn't all there is to an epic) one of marillion's better tracks from that time period of their music.

My choice: Supper's Ready

The mood changes of this song are thrilling, and the movement "apocolypse in 9/8" is worth the vote alone. Some other honourable mentions:

Focus - Eruption

Caravan - Nine Feet Underground

Collosseum - Valentyne Suite

Great poll question.

I voted for Suppers Ready and had to go then dig it out on vinyl - a live
version as well as i I don't have it on CD. Gotta buy a CD version
tomorrow to put on the iPod.

I just don't know a couple of them (Hamburger Concerto, Rïah Sahïltaahk, The Icon...), the rest are great... I'm sure these 3 as well, anyway, I voted for Gates... (not Bill ) because it has been my Yes favorite, though I hesitated between this and Plague... I love GoD so much.

Btw, I don't think MDK (Magma) is an epic, may be a concept album, but otherwise you would have to place Snow Goose by Camel or Bo Hansson's Lord of the Rings too... not to mention many concept albums here and there... (666 would be great to mention, and it has a side long epic, indeed: All the Seats Were Occupied!!)

In a gadda da vida is prog, indeed... but it's questionable whether it is epic. IMHO it's just an extended song with extended (but incredible, anyway!) guitar/keyboard solos... Had it been slightly longer, Doors' Light Might Fire could have easily fit into this category!

Oh, no one has mentioned Zappa! How 'bout "Gumbo Variations"??? I'm in love with that since the moment I first heard!

Lastly: though my Tangerine Dream fave is Madrigal Meridian, I could have voted for Force Majeure too... Heavens, so many side long epics of them!!!!

nice thread, btw
