maybe CR will employ some of our people to research and expand their product hahhah.
How's that for an idea M@X.... a nice expansion for the site hahhah. In PRINT.....offer the services of your genre teams and specialists to put together articles and album recommendations for the magazine. Hell...even as editors so people are not left wondering just how Steve Howe got that great guitar tone on Time and a Word

It'll be fun to see if the article has any impact when it's on print. What reach the mag has in general, and what reach these special prog editions may have in particular, should bear witness to that in the number of visitors here.
I know that prog fans left, right and centre are buying the mag for support, but the important factor here is the number of people getting it not involved or in the know I'd say.
It's good for the site to get noticed indeed; and that it is deemed important. Question is if people not already in the know will learn about it - for me that is the most vital issue really.
Spreading the word ;-)

Ironically, Dan (From The Tea Club) and I recently had a conversation about this site's influence, and them getting featured here really helped them get recognition and respect in the Prog Community. This bit of news is just further proof of this site's status among Prog lovers!!!

amen... that was an addition I was very proud of myself.. the more so when Raff and I got their album and saw how that great music was put on a site where it belonged and where hopefully people might discover it.. which is why we put that group as one of the obscure and unknown gems of the site.

I'm sure I have, try Real Groovy or Whitcoulls. Are you in a major town? if so just keep looking, I'm certain I've seen it. By the way, I noticed you've got Amon Duul II on your list, where did you go to get it? I tried to order at real groovy from an Aussie distributor but got nowhere.

From what I understand, these prog specials are printed in about 20.000 copies, and if all sold probably read by about 40.000 initially.
Number of printed copies came forth in a discussion at ProgEars, and I know that magazines, like newspapers, are usually read by more people than the ones buying it. What the estimates are on this kind of publication I don't know though. But an average of 2 readers pr. copy is usually regarded as a safe assumption.

They better not include any of that crap about punk having to come in because prog got too big for its boots, I'm feed up with the same old garbage that those critics, magazines and documentaries say about prog. They just make that stuff up without any real evidence or get all one sided about it.

Yeah, I think I`d go for the case of beer. I was unable to open it but from the looks of the cover it looks a bit on the commercial side. Pink Floyd is the main feature. I mean how much more do we need to know about PF. Occasionally you see the odd prog review in the UK magazine Record Collector. Last month they had a short review on Frumpy 2 and three Hawkwind re-issues.
I `d like to see a magazine that has the guts to devote itself to lesser known prog bands both from the early days up to the present.

It is a worthwhile magazine to read - for a first issue, of course they had to set out their stall with the "greats"; the problem is in the UK, we only pay about a quarter what you guys have to pay, so you're bound to be less enthusiastic.
The proof of the pudding will be from issue 2 onwards.

I just leafed through a store copy that was open this morning. I find they`re trying to market more neo-prog bands. Too many adverts in a mag that costs $25.95 CAN. There were the usual articles on Marilion, JT, Rush and too much Pink Floyd. Hadn`t heard of any of the bands on the CD. Was suprised to see a review for Grobschnitt`s Illegal album though. Tried to go to the magazine`s website but just got erreur de charge. Didn`t see anything about PA.
-------------
|
Posted By: Jim Garten

I think the mentions re PA are in the next issue - although their parent magazine Classic Rock did make a small mention of us this month, effectively saying if you want to know anything about prog rock, here is the site to be.
So far as advertising is concerned, unfortunately that's the way over here with virtually every magazine on the shelf...

I know. I once picked an issue on Glam Rock for $2 (the distributor used to drop the unsold copies at a local second hand shop). I was mostly interested in the CD which had some 15 new(er) glam bands. For the most part, they were really just bad hair metal bands that likely wanted to avoid that tag. And frankly, I can't see any music scene or genre that can't generate 15 new & good bands with at least one decent song.

The cover price was bothersome to me as well but moreso because there is no way to get a feel for the actual content because of the idiotic adition of outside packaging. I didn't want to spend $15 bucks on a prog magazine whose packaging indicated it was so heavy on new bands I don't really care for. For those who've bought it: how much do they delve into the past and what classic bands to they feature?

There are some nice stories about Yes,Wakeman,Asia,ELP and PF in it. Very few reviews on books,CD's etc. There is quite a bit on new bands. Next issue will have Radiohead,Mars Volta,KC and VDGG. Not sure if I will plunk down the $15 again though.
13 issues of Classic Rock airmailed to you 3 weeks prior to them being on the shelves here is $116.11, $232.22 for 2 years. They don't even give you a discount for ordering 2 years like most mags do. Nothing on the website about Classic Rock presents Prog.

These 'nobodies' are out there flying the flag for new progressive rock; there are many out there who have gone back to the greats after hearing them.
This is the first magazine in the UK specifically centering on prog rock and this will be only its 2nd issue - a bit early to be putting it down in my opinion...

Well, I suppose that's just the start of the waiting game for us in the USA... The first issue got here about one and a half months after its British release, so we can expect the second to be here around the end of June or so.

First Impressions !! I have had the magazine in my hands for the last ten minutes and here is my first impressions: Behind this commercial cover, you find a very informative interview with our M@X at page 16. You will also find stuff about Dave Stewart, VDGG, Bill Bruford, DT and more of "our" bands. There are some reviews here too. But then again; so have PA..... I can see myself reading this magazine from front to back. Which means hours of interesting reading and then a good reference source for the coming years. I am not going to knock it. My first impression is very good. But I guess that's open for debate. Both my personal preferences and this magazine. 4 stars from me based on the first impression.

I just picked up a copy of the first issue for $ 5 in the bargain bin at Chapters in Montréal without the CD or packaging ( someone must have torn it open and ripped off the CD ). The guy who owns the magazine store across the street had this problem. People were ripping the outside packaging open to have a glance at it and then the CDs got lost, the mag got tattered from people browsing through it and he ended up having to send them back to the distributor as damaged. My impression from the first one is, as I said earlier, too much rehash on older bands and too much about newer bands which aren`t really prog bands. They have to get rid of the CD and the packaging if this thing is going to succeed. Don`t go for my juggler. Just my take.

I suppose that we from across the pond will have to wait a month or so before the mag reaches our shores...

Raff - they have, apparently, increased the amount of copies held direct from the website, which is Future Publications. Try this link: http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/
I find it quite expensive at about £7, but given that it is the only publication that is providing a pure prog read on a regular basis, deserves our support.

Tbanks a lot for the info, Steve! We both liked the first issue, and this one features an interview with our Captain, M@x - so it's really a no-brainer for us.

Apparently the first issue sold out in quick quick time - from speaking to other people, it seems the most reliable source in the UK is W H Smiths.

Had a quick glance through the new issue & seems like a good'un - half page feature on PA & Max in particular which should get a few more hits to the site.

Is it possible to reproduce the PA article here because it seems that there are news agents here in Montréal won`t be carrying it for one reason or another. One guy told me it was because of the price another guy tells me he hates dealing with the CD thing. Chapters/Indigo/Coles is not carrying it but the girl didn`t know why. I got a price-reduced first copy sans CD from Chapters for 5 bucks about a week and a half ago.

I believe you can order the magazine online to be shipped to you for a cheaper price than it would had cost you to buy it in a shop. Link in one of the posts above.

I don`t buy ANYTHING using a bloody computer. I just don`t think this mag is going to fly for a number of reasons from what I`ve seen with the first issue. It is just too similar to their regular magazine which I`ve bought from time to time. I`ll keep an eye on the bargain bins.

Well, a bit of misunderstanding in the interview but I am planning on associating the site with some Festivals, yes.
Compilations CDs, a project, yes, for independant artists seeking exposure!

Was that just a tid-bit of the interview? Is there a full interview page, or is that it?
Either way, its damn cool that Progarchives gets some brownie points. Good to get your name out there too Max!

If we, the users of PA, supports it, it will fly. We will also manage to get the magazine where we want it. So this is our oppurtunity and 1-in-100-years-chance to get a magazine we like. So out of pure solidarity and support for the scene; buy the magazine. Besides of that; the magazine is a bloody good read too. I really do not know if we understand what a nice oppurtunity this magazine is for us. Grab it with both hands and get behind it ! Then we can discuss among ourselves if Muse og Gong are turds or not.
