So I was searching for the appropriate Beatles thread to post this on and came across this one. Oddly enough just the single post, but it was still open. My wife got me a new Rubber Soul for my birthday (I was born in '65, nice touch  ). It's a thinner and nicer package and RS is the first Beatles album I consider essential to my music collection chronologically. I'm not interested in the complete boxset package or the USB drive apple (cool though it is in concept). Should I bother replacing the rest forward? George did the '80's remasters, right? I'm content to keep those and boldly go where I haven't gone before in exploring music.------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Thanks, I thought there was an extensive thread but I missed it while searching. EDIT, I had found that stereo vs. mono thread and since I have the remasters from the '80's and will have to go through seven pages to possibly find an answer...  I'm looking for someone who has heard both the old remasters and the new ones in the stereo format. And we're talking CDs, not LPs, you crazy vinyl freak folk.  ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Slarti, I've god the Abbey Road and Sgt. Peppers 2009 stereo remasters, and I previously had the 1986 remasters of both. The Sgt. Peppers remaster does sound significantly better and more dynamic, although Abbey Road is not quite as different. I'm not much of a Beatles fan, but I can hear a definite difference both through a stereo and in MP3's on my PC.
Also worth mentioning the packaging for the single album 2009 stereo remasters is lovely. -------------

Slarti, the new remasters are way better than the old ones, and I say this as an old Beatles fan. I won't get into the mono vs. stereo comparisons, since I don't have the mono and am sorta right now not wanting to spend the money. All the stereo are available as single discs. Pick one or two of your favorites...er...you already have Rubber Soul. So give it a listen and if you have the old one to compare it to, there's your decision. Rubber Sould has an interesting history for me. I was a mere youngster at the time and had no income, but I needed Rubber Soul, so one of my friends gave me Rubber Soul and I gave him a Dave Clark FIve album. Sweet  , a nice even trade.------------- Can you tell me where we're headin'? Lincoln County Road or Armageddon. |

I've giving the new spin right now. Not sure if I want to spend too much time on side by side comparison sound wise. The new one is a certainly a much nicer package physically speaking. Uhm, sounds like I've heard from a couple big fans. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I'm thinking it does sound a little sweeter than the first CD remaster. But I'm listening to the new one on a different sound system. Of course, whatever format you have or are listening to it on, there's some really good tunes. Music long ingrained in the brain. I'm not surprised that the Abbey Road new remaster wouldn't sound too different from the first remaster pass.

I originally listened to most of The Beatles output on a) a decidedly sh*tty AM radio in some '60 era car, or b) a decidedly sh*tty stereo. It really wasn't until the mid-70's I had a decent stereo, and even then we're stretching the meaning of decent. According to some, I still don't have a decent stereo. But I do hear stuff not heard before (and yes, the hallucinations/flashbacks have stopped  ). ------------- Can you tell me where we're headin'? Lincoln County Road or Armageddon. |

This brings out the question that if a reworking of a recording that brings out things you might have not heard before or even an improved listening system does the same, is that so wrong?
