I recently bought ELP's Tarkus, without really looking into it first. I didn't look at the back of the case, I just popped it in my discman and was amazed. I was on a bus with my school band at the time, and after the first song was over, we were getting close to our destination, so I put my discman away and looked at the case. I then discovered that the sing I had just listened to was twenty-one minutes long. I'm no stranger to the epics, being a huge fan of Yes and Genesis, as well as ELP, though at the time I had only heard Brain Salad Surgery and Pictures, both of which I loved. The length of the song surprised me though, because it had seemed to pass in about five minutes. The epics usually seem a little more prolonged to me, because they are saying more than the nonsensical Tarkus suite, but I like this quality. I realized that the energy of the song is consistant throughout, and that the arythmic or atonal bits which I usually love so much are absent in this composition. This however, helps to sustain the listener through each individual minute, daring you to become bored. Therefore, it is very difficult to choose a favorite moment. I think, though, that my vote would go to Mass for Emerson's "speaking organ" solo. What are your thoughts?

I apoligize very sincerely for the absence of Eruption in my list. Please note that due to my own stupidity, it ended up as the poll question. If you want a more accurate poll, I am about to make one.

Nice idea for a poll, Syntharachnid. Tarkus is one of mt favorite tracks ever. I love "Stones of Years", because it's stand in such a great contrast with the opening, and I love ist when Greg Lake starts singing: " Has the dawn ever seen your eyes". Great lyrics.

Great poll.
I suggest listening to "Tarkus" on "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends..." live album. Battlefield is slightly extended, and Aquatarkus is awesome..

I would go for Eruption, but as RaphaelT said, the live version of Aquatarkus is something special.

Tarkus:
- 01. Eruption
- 02. Stones of Years
- 03. Iconoclast
- 04. Mass
- 05. Manticore
- 06. Battlefield
- 07. Aquatarkus
I like the whole thing, though the tracks in bold are my favorites. But i really can't decide just one!

I'd vote for "Aquatarkus" on the basis of the live version.

Battlefield and Aquatarkus in their live version, as RaphaelT said. They're just awesome, especially the first with the insertion of KC's immortal Epitaph. Anyway, the whole track is one of the best things ever recorded in the history of rock.

"Stones Of Years" mainly because of Greg's beautiful vocals and the melody, of course.
I also love the frenetic "Iconoclast" as well.

Great poll. You know?, the first part of the song is so intense and so full of energy and passion I never get tired of listening, over and over. The musicianship is just perfect and clean. The rest of the song is great too but those first 5 minutes are on the top of my mind when I think of prog. And about music in general.

I voted for Battlefield, but good call on Stones of Years.
