I believe it's a great band with some progressive influencesand a few 100% prog tracks, but not enough to be considered a progressive band.

Indeed.  A lot of prog influence evident, but not enough to be considered for inclusion IMO.

no no: maiden is the purest metal band you can have, so leave it to the metal genre! maybe mercyful fate could be here, but definitely not maiden; by the way, did you know that maiden rules? SURE!

I'd say they have their progressive elements ... Maybe it is the most progressive band out of commercial metallic bands. But I cast my "no". Because otherwise I would have to vote for adding (at least early) Elton John here too (who will say that "Love Lies Bleeding" is not prog??). Some groups/artists are just not prog oriented, but they sometimes produce a track/album which feature some prog elements.

Iván, we are again of a similar opinion

They'd laugh their heads off if someone suggested to them they were prog.

What's the deal, James, with you suggesting loads of metal bands as prog? If you love metal so much join a metal forum, and if you don't, then you're not making anyone laugh.

It's only knock and knowall, but I like it...

I do think that Iron Maiden do have progressive elements in a lot of their work, but probably not enough to merit their inclusion here; maybe you could term them under 'progressive metal' but even then it'd be pushing it.

If we include Maiden then we  must include Metallica, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, MSG, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, King Diamond and 1000 other metal bands.

generalheavyrock/metal/progarchives.com

I'm sure there are other sites devoted purely to heavy metal. Why does ANY metal band need to be here???

There is a definite correlation between heavy metal and prog rock - hence the much disputed genre of prog metal. It's nothing new either - early heavy metal bands have as many prog tendencies as most modern so-called prog metal bands.

Maiden, like Rainbow, Judas Priest and even Def Leppard (not to mention Uriah Heep ) have had prog moments - but the constant underlying genre is decidedly heavy metal - and so it should be!

Maiden are one of the greatest metal bands ever.

Hence not prog

I like Iron Maiden very much, and other metal bands, but that does not mean that they belong to this site.  I know that a lot of prog followers like these kinds of bands, but just because they are liked by prog rock fans it does not mean that they are prog.  It also does not mean that they are not good.

My opinion:

Iron Maiden: VERY GOOD BAND but not PROG.  Onw of the Purest METAL BANDS around.

Cheers

Becasue some poeple dont like Heavy Metal its as simple as that. For some there is no such thing a good metal band.

I grew up on metal and I can see the correlation as Cert points out, but tastes change. I look back at those times with a mixture of affection and amusement. I acknowledge the pleasure artists like Maiden gave me in 1982, but I cant listern to much metal these days. There's not enough light and shade in the music. There are thoughtful moments but by and large metal just deals in high drama, anger and youth angst. That gets tiresome for me.

I think they are sh*t, not that i have ever tryed to like em. I yust think they are a bunch of uncharismatic ugly sh*t heads who have done the same album over and over again for like 20 years. I think whats make a good band are when they proggres like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica And almost all great bands have tryed diffrent things and made albums that have sounded diffrent from each other. Iron maiden have never tryed anything yust the same bad sh*t metal over and over and over again. And I hardly ever lisen to metal any more when i was yunger i only lisened metal then whent i got older i discovered Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Yes... And understod there was beter thing to lisent to then KoRn and Limp bizkit. since then i hardly ever lisen to any metal, and if i do it have to be good. The last metal album i bought i think was Rust in peace by Megadeth, now thats a great metal album.

Well my point is metal is for teenagers when you grow older hopfully you will discover that there is beter music to lisen to, i have thank good for that.

Black Sabbath is the best metal band i think, and they wher allso the first, they and Metallica.

IRON MAIDEN belong everywhere. They are one of the greatest bands in rock history. Go see them live if you don't believe it. Even without synth or keyboards, they are prog in their own metal way.

Agreed ... they're not prog. I also don't think that they were a major influence to Prog Metal, at least not as much as Metallica or Megadeth.

Sorry!
