In the two months since the release of Mantis, we've been overwhelmed with the attention and appreciation from the progressive rock community.  We admire the rich tradition that the community has, and the respect they have for many of the same artists that have had a lasting influence on us as well.  We've been privileged to share the stage with such heroes as Adrian Belew, Mike Keneally and Stanley Jordan in recent years

Our latest album "Mantis" has been touted as our most progressive studio album, and we are very proud of how it turned out.  We were glad to take the time and flesh out our compositional approach on Mantis, and wound up with an album that stretched our songwriting and playing to levels we hadn't been able to produce in the studio before.

While we enjoyed the experience of taking our time in the studio, much of the Umphrey's McGee experience happens on-stage where we live 120+ nights a year.  The challenge of reproducing some of our demanding compositions live while leaving room for both loose and structured improvisation brings out the best in us, and we encourage you to come and experience it with us.

We wanted to let you know that Jake, Kris and Joel have embarked on a new project, OHMphrey (http://myspace.com/ohmphrey), with OHM's Chris Poland and Robertino Pagliari.  This project is rooted in progressive improvisation, and will release an album and support it with a few west coast shows. Furthermore, another improvisational fusion side project of ours, Kick the McGee, is thrilled to be teaming up with Morglbl from France for a show in Chicago @ Martyrs' on 5/20.

As a token of our appreciation, we're offering a free digital sampler of the "proggier" side of Umphrey's McGee to the progressive rock community, though it's really a little bit of everything to help provide context of the grander scheme of who we are as a band.  In this sampler, you'll find a heavy-dose of prog-metal in Wizard Burial Ground, while a slice of the improvisation and instrumental dexterity that UM is well known for resides inside Higgins. An electric re-working of Safety In Numbers' acoustic End of the Road is a band favorite, and to give you a taste of some our our playing with special guests you'll hear Adrian Belew lending his guitar to King Crimson's Red and Mike Keneally stopping by for some extended on-stage antics and guitar pyrotechnics on Ringo.  We’ve also included a bonus video of “Out of Order” from our PBS Soundstage performance.

Umphrey's McGee - Prog Sampler track list
1) Rocker part II (10.28.08)
2) Wizard Burial Ground (12.30.08)
3) Higgins (12.29.07)
4) End of the Road (2.17.08)
5) Search 4 (2.12.08)
6) Red (3.17.07 with Adrian Belew)
7) The Fussy Dutchman (12.30.04)
8) Ringo (2.12.08 with Mike Keneally)

This will deposit the FREE download in your basket from our download site UMLive.net (run by Livedownloads.com).  Registration at UMLive.net is free and required to complete the process. We'll keep this posted for the next 2 weeks, until April 17th, so grab it while it's hot.

To those who've checked out our albums and/or shows, and to those who are helping spread the word (and we encourage you to spread this around), we appreciate your support.  Thanks for your continued interest in Umphrey's McGee, we hope to see you all on the road some time soon!

for now they have just the 3 dates scheduled in May.

history:
OHM opened up for UM for a SoCal gig in late '05 and 3 more on the east coast in May 2006 (which included a sit-in by Rob Pagliari).
they played a gig in Chicago the following week, which featured Jake and Joel, plus Kris taking over on drums for a second set of about 60 minutes of improv. I felt lucky to be there.
I suppose that was technically the first OHMphrey gig.
the 2nd, 3rd and 4th are taking place 3 years later.  let's hope it's not too much longer until the 5th. I would be surprised if this outfit didn't play at least a few more gigs before the year is out.

I saw Umphrey's a week ago today and it was really phenomenal. I'll definitely see them every time they come back though now. The Pageant was a great venue for them.

Just checked out the OHMphrey site - very nice modern jazz fusion. A more organic version of Ohm:, trippier, smoother.

Mighty kind.  I'll grab it when I get home.  Kind of on a McGee overload.  Picked up Anchor Drops and Safety In Numbers from my local brick and mortar this week.  Still haven't totally absorbed the live DVDs I ordered, but they were verrrry nice.  Keep up the good work guys.  Just discovered your music here in 2009 and I am still blown away.

I downloaded the prog stuff and since I had to sign in, I looked at the show I went to....

So I downloaded Shine On and then went looking for other cool covers....ended up with a nice album's worth:

Shine On Crazy Diamond
Time (obvious second choice)
YYZ
Hot For Teacher (intro solo accurate so....)
And Justice for All (surely you're kidding...no)
Song Remains the Same
War Pigs
Fool in the Rain

It's virtually the set list from one of my former bands......wooohoooo.

YES! Wizard Burial Ground is AWESOME!!!!!

this is a great little prog compilation, showcasing their proggier side. i wouldve included Bridgeless, Much Obliged, Nothing Too Fancy, and Jajunk Pt. I & II as well. Those, plus the ones above, are some of their most progressive songs pre-Mantis. Great selection!

^I saw them Saturday in Baltimore. They started off with Jajunk and finished off an otherworldly first set with Can't You Hear Me Knocking. The second set featured Divisions, Turn and Run, Cemetary Walk among others. A nice blend of old and new which was nice. Get ready for an amazing show!

4.10.09
Nokia Theatre
New York, NY

SET 2 Jazz Odyssey > Made to Measure > Preamble > Mantis, Cemetery Walk, Cemetery Walk II, Turn & Run > "Jimmy Stewart" > Turn & Run > Spires, Prophecy Now > Red Tape > 1348

ENCORE Comfortably Numb

pretty cool...they performed Mantis, in sequence (with improv), 2nd set in NYC last night.

(for the uninitiated, Jazz Odyssey opening a set is a piece of improv/short composition...in last night's case it was a repeated JO that has opened 2 other shows...I'm personally hoping it develops into a song. here's an mp3 of an audience recording of a performance of this JO: http://www.archive.org/download/um2009-03-04.ccm4/um2009-03-04d1t01_vbr.mp3%29 - http://www.archive.org/download/um2009-03-04.ccm4/um2009-03-04d1t01_vbr.mp3

pssst... for fans of the group...  what makes this group J-R/F.Which albums?   Listening to an album now... and this seems textbook Xover prog.  Or whatever.. .but this sounds nothing like J-R in my opinion... and make it two.. Raff's as well.

Jazz-Rock Fusion does not seem right to me either and in fact I opened a thread a few months back for moving them to eclectic. The problem is that no one seems to know where to put them. The new one, Mantis is by far the most prog-gy and their live shows (for which they're known) venture more into fusion jamming. I think they are a good eclectic candidate, although crossover isn't totally out of line either.

anywhere sort of RIO seems better than JR/F.. especially if Mantis is the most proggy???? whoa...I thought it might have been a step back.. proggy wise.

I'll set the wheels in motion for this... thanks Jay Clap

When we started listening to the album, I immediately realised it was not JR/F, but much closer to Crossover. Unfortunately, neither of us is an expert on the band, so - until we have access to some more material - we will have to rely on other people's opinion.

BTW, Jay, I finally managed to find your thread (where I had posted), and also Darkshade's thread on the same subject. Hopefully they'll be moved as soon as possible, because I get this idea they are seriously misplaced...

i have stated many times these guys should be moved to eclectic.

Local Band Does O.K. is their only studio album that showcases their jazzy side a lot. Anchor Drops does as well, but not as much. The last 3 studio albums of theirs has focused more on composition and are much "proggier", especially the most recent "Mantis"

they also have many "live-only" songs, one being Wizard Burial Ground, which is straight-up THRASH METAL! and Bridgeless, which is really proggy in a DT-kind of way. Or Much Obliged which is jazz-funk, with a little bit of TFK-feel during the verses.

Even their live performances are more on the eclectic side (though they do get pretty jazzy too.) They're too diverse to be just jazz-rock. Listen or download the show i went to Saturday night in NYC and you'll see (or hear) what i mean.

set 1
http://www.archive.org/details/4-11-2009UmphreysMcgee-NokiaTheatreNewYorkNy - http://www.archive.org/details/4-11-2009UmphreysMcgee-NokiaTheatreNewYorkNy

set 2
http://www.archive.org/details/4-11-2009UmphreysMcgee-Set2-NokiaTheatreNewYorkNykm40-128kbps - http://www.archive.org/details/4-11-2009UmphreysMcgee-Set2-NokiaTheatreNewYorkNykm40-128kbps

i dont think they would even consider themselves jazz-rock. There's too many rock riffs, progressive passages, VOCALS, non-jazz compositions, etc.

i say they should be moved to ECLECTIC PROG.

They usually do one cover a night: Floyd and Rush are common but Metallica, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Michael Jackson, etc.....

Heavy Prog would actually be more appropriate than J/F as Mars Volta are over there and have some similar sensibilities.

Xover, Heavy, Eclectic (my 1st choice) seem to be candidates.

no problem. i was going to post a review of Saturday night's show, and go off on a similar rant on how this band should be moved. But if the powers that be are going to take some action, then i wont do that.

i also dont feel like reviewing the show in general lol. it would just be me praising the band and the show, especially since ive never seen them live. so i just posted the link so everyone can check it out. BTW the light show of theirs was sick!

i could see Heavy Prog, but they have a lot of 'softer' moments, so idk... Xover i dont think completely defines them, since their sound is kind of their own AND they cover many diverse styles, plus all their albums sound different. I still think Eclectic is the way to go.

Even if you considered them Proto-related non-prog music, I highly suggest seeing them live as it's a phenomenal experience for anyone who likes live music. As darkshade said, their lights are great, they are a lot of fun, and the crowd is always into it. It certainly not sit in your cushioned chair and take notes type music but if you like rock, go!

I think they were added when the site was still in its infancy, by some occasional collaborator (the name at the bottom of the page didn't ring any bells). Therefore, it is OK to edit the bio... When a bio is signed by someone who is still active on PA, we usually ask them permission to edit it, or leave things alone.

btw.. lost in the fuss...  Mantis was a real good album Thumbs Up

ok. i have to work on a bio though. should i just update it where the old one left off, or a completely new one? either way ill have to work on it, and when im done ill PM it to you

BTW at the Friday night show at Nokia Theater they performed the entire Mantis album in its entirety, with a 9+ minute Cemetery Walk II and a 12+ minute Turn & Run!!!

Lucky...Tongue i didnt see them on Friday, only Saturday. But hearing them play the whole album live is phenomenal, adds a new dimension to the album. I got my copies from UMlive.net, released by the band themselves.

They had an amazing Cemetary walk and Turn & Run at my show but that would have been awesome to hear the entire album...I would have like to have heard their take on Mantis i saw them play Mantis and 1348 which was really good. The Triple Wide was sandwhiched right in the middle of Mantis, it was pretty awesome

Yeah I'm hoping to get a copy of my show from a friend...at the show I went to, they bookended the 2nd set with Divisions and I believe they may have taken one break in that set, everything else just transitioning into the next. The first set at my show was unbelievable in its intensity and muscianship

a couple of things.

this download is only around through Friday, so if you haven't grabbed it, now is the time!

if anyone is interested in reviewing Jimmy Stewart 2007 for the site...I'll send you a digital copy...PM me for details.

here's some pictures from Nokia of Jake using a new Becker guitar.  It's purty....and the tone on that thing just screams!

Don't know why but the link to a review of my first time experience with UM in 2006 did not link correctly here is the text of my note:

So I'm up in Sonoma County, California to visit my daughter and taste some of the fine wine growing up there and I notice in Petaluma Umphrey’s McGee is playing.  So me and the GF head down to Petaluma Sunday night to hear them at The Mystic Theater.  My familiarity of them is Anchor Drops and a one cursory listen to a pod cast of one show.

You have to understand arriving in down town Petaluma I thought  I walked back to the early 70’s.  I was expecting maybe some nod to the hippy culture but not as much as I saw.  Some guys with beards and hair grayer than the rain soaked clouds were hanging out in front.  I saw a guy with a New Riders of the Purple Sage t-shirt. Girls in flip flops and jeans with long styled hair and glassy eyes were heading through the door.  I thought this going to suck.  If this is the kind of people who listen to them then this is going to be a Grateful Dead clone.  We get inside and decide to sit in the balcony not knowing what might be happening on the floor.  Altogether the crowd was 350-400 people in a place that maxs at 500.  It is a converted movie theater just so you know the layout.  Good sound system and decent size stage although I think it  would find it difficult if these guys toured with someone else.  The size of their set up is large.  They have two Guitarists and a Bassist, Drummer, Percussionist (who might of well been a drummer he just needed a bass drum) and a Keyboard player who had a full set up of a Hammond and several months and other assorted keyboards.

Right before (30 minutes or so) the band came on there seemed to be a waft of poignant smoke arising from all over the theater.  So much so the smoke was rising into the lights above the stage and creating a bit of a fog show.  My naïve GF who didn’t experience the 70’s like most of us said “ that’s some kind of special effect isn’t it”.  I said "I have never heard pot called that before". I am serious no one tried to stop it and it was blatant as all get out. It was way too funny makes me chuckle now as I type this.

Finally the band came on and you know what?  I don’t understand why any of those people like them. All they did was create some of the tightest riff orientated music I haven’t heard since the Dixie Dregs or Frank Zappa.  The drummer and percussionist were incredibly tight and if any of the hippie girls dancing on the floor had any idea that there was little dance rhythm to the music it would have shocked them to sobriety.

I loved the dual lead guitarist and the keyboard player kept things interesting.  If I have a complaint it is the vocals that predominately alternative rock in their style.

I am hoping to get to know this band better and picked up their DVD at the show and hope to have better report than this one without the contact high. Wink

I am not sure if this helps in your evaluation of where they should go but it certainly should help you realize you need to go see this band.

Smile

i was also surprised to see certain people at the show i went to. Lots of hot girls, lots of college students (i guess that means me too...) but hey, the band appeals to many different types of people.

i talked to one guy in between sets who had to be in his early 50s, who was going nuts about the band. He said he's seen Yes, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, ELP, James Brown, Miles Davis, and some obscure prog band i never heard of, all back in the 70s. Said he saw KC in the 80s, and was into Iron Maiden during the 80s. He said Umphrey's McGee bridges the gap between that generation and mine, i had to agree. he couldnt believe how good they were. And i had to admit, with the large amount of young people at the show, there was a good amount of much older people there. It made me feel good.

i would pay double what i paid to see them ($37) and am definitely going to see them again as much as i can. They put on an AMAZING show, and the copy i bought off UMlive proves it. (btw it was 15% off if you bought both Nokia Theater shows and it was worth it, Friday's show was just as sick (full album performance of Mantis!!!))

give it time. took a couple of listens to fully appreciate it. I do think it's better than Safety In Numbers, which is funny because TB1/2 songs are from the SIN sessions.

this is a great intro to the band live. However, if you really want to see what the band can do (and see how proggy and jazz-rock they can be) then check out this show from 2005

http://www.archive.org/details/um2005-02-26.matrix.flac16 - http://www.archive.org/details/um2005-02-26.matrix.flac16

this one showcases their proggier side a lot, especially since it contains "live-only" songs, some of which are their most proggy songs, and a lot of jazz-fusion. The second set in particular (starts with Bridgeless) is amazing. Bridgeless, The Fuzzy Dutchmen, Push the Pig, Much Obliged, and The Triple Wide are all not on any albums but are some of their best songs.

Notice that encore - JaJunk > Thunderstruck (AC/DC) > JaJunk > It's About That Time (M. Davis/J. Zawinul) > JaJunk

excellent sound quality, i wouldnt be surprised if this one were released as an official live album

Before they got big enough to sell recordings of all their shows, they used to allow audience patches into their soundguy's recording rig. 2-26-05 dates from the final days of that period.

Also, I was there. Tongue  You're right: great show. They always throw down in Boulder.

I'm listening to Jimmy Stewart 2007 and it's great stuff....multiple versions of the same song which sound nothing like each other. Not exactly proggy but phenomenal music, and really captures the feel of being there.

There's a massive amount of music though so my review may take a little time.

Grooving on the Summer Sampler freebie which I spotted on a cluttered checkout counter at a local package store.  I see they'll be doing an outdoor show at a club in Atlanta 8/14/10.  I missed the band on their last pass through this town.  Need to rectify that in August.  Hopefully the weather will be kind.  Big smile
