Do you get the DTs if you go without DT, or do you always need a pt of PT?

(Whew, that took some stretching to come up with)

3-0 to Porked Tree so far (edit, make that 5-2, re-edit 2-7).  Though this is early days, I expect Porcupine Tree to ream Dream Theater in this poll.  Here are the results of when it was done before: forum_posts.asp?TID=35161&KW=DT+PT - PT or DT
103 [70.07%]
44 [29.93%]

Has anyone done a DT (Deadsoul Tribe) vs. PT (Pineapple Thief) one?  There are a number of DTs in PA.

I prefer PT.  Won't vote, though, as neither PT nor DT are my cup-of-T.

I suspect the results will be similar- but I was curious.

The last poll was started before Fear of a Blank Planet or Systematic Chaos were released.  I know people are abuzz about the new Dream Theater album coming up also.

Dream Theater for me, they're my absolute favorite band. That said, Porcupine Tree is my #2. So I really can't lose here.

It will be interesting to see how different, or how similar the votes are.  Both bands' latest releases proved somewhat controversial (what anticipated releases by established names don't prove somewhat controversial? lol).  Although looking at the ratings, and some collabs, and collabs commonly tend to be cautious when it comes to giving out masterpiece status, gave DT's five stars, but I know it palled for many DT fans.  And PT's caused significant wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth when they "won" collab's top album for 2007 (particularly after winning that distinction with their former album -- 2005's Deadwing).  PT's has the overall higher rating, so it could be that PT does even better this time, though there is that anticipation over DT's album (surprised to see it's already been added to PA), and of course tastes change, and people come and go.  There are bands I loved some years ago, that I don't like nearly so much anymore.

I havent listened to enough porcupine tree albums to give a good vote on the bands' entire discographies, but what ive heard from PT is definitely better than DT's recent albums and definitely not as good as Images and Words in my mind

Neither of them are favourites of mine (surprise, surpriseWink), but I'd take PT any day over DT. As overrated as I find them, at least I can listen to a whole album of theirs and find some pleasure in itLOL.

This looks like a modern ELP vs Camel to my eyes and ears. You have the bombast on one side and the subtle Valium-like on the other. Well.., at least SW can sing.

Hard to decide , PT is more consistent and their later album was their best. While DT's last two were awful but they have incredible albums like Awake.

JLB sings better than SW to me. That irony was directed to Camel.

I still proudly enjoy Dream Theater.

Porcupine Tree has yet to affect me. I'm thinking of listening to more of their music, but I really don't feel like spending my money on something I may or may not enjoy.

Yeah, that's exactly what I think. SFAM is the last DT album I can somewhat enjoy, after that it's very patchy,  but I don't even nearly like In Absentia, my favourite PT album, anywhere near as much as Awake.  Agree about that comparison too Tongue though what complicates matters here is Wilson's singing is much livelier than Latimer and La Brie's not quite so as Lake's.  I generally reward brilliance over consistency, so DT it has to be.  It's strange, two years back, I could definitely say I liked PT much more than DT and more than any new prog band but that's no longer the case.

DT has been going downhill for years, PT have been getting only better (well, I slightly prefer Deadwing to Black Blanket). PT haven't yet done anything that rivals I&W or Awake on my lists, but I'll give them the vote for doing so well these few past years.

How ironic that PT will own this poll (and I voted for them) and they dont have any albums in the top 100 anymore.  Good thing I love DT as well.

Fresh off of their stomping of The Flower Kings ( forum_posts.asp?TID=58116&KW=&PID=3251820#3251820 - link ) The Dream Theater gang continue their strut down the alley of Progressive Bad Assness cocky and still full of themselves.  They don't notice that they're walking into a trap.

Out of nowhere, Colin Edwin leaps from a second story building, hurtling towards John Myung.  Unfortunately, Myung's years of martial arts training serve him well allowing him to gingerly step to the side, avoiding Edwin completely.  Unfortunately, Edwin doesn't do nearly as good of a job avoiding the ground, effectively taking himself out of the fight.

With the element of surprise gone, Steven Wilson takes on the daunting trio of Charlie Dominici, James Labrie and John Petrucci.  Steven would hold his own at first, using a broken guitar string as a garrote against James LaBrie, though little did anyone know, LaBrie's surgically reconstructed throat was apparently surrounded by a sheath of surgical steel rendering Wilson's attack ineffective at best.  This serves to only piss off John Petrucci who promptly eats Steven Wilson and Charlie Dominici.

Mike Portnoy sizes up the pair of Harrison and Maitland and starts posturing by hitting as many things as he possibly can with his sticks.  In a move, vaguely reminiscent of the first Indiana Jones movie, Gavin Harrison wails a stick at Portnoy in the midst of the flourish, hitting him square between the eyes and removing him from combat.

As the keyboardists were getting ready to duke it out, Kevin Moore gets a call from his girlfriend breaking up with him.  He promptly storms off angrily into obscurity, singing about his hurt in a flat and uninteresting voice.  Derek Sherenin watches with a certain amount of amusement as Moore leaves then turns towards Richard Barbieri sizing up the opponent.  As Sherenin studies the situation, Jordan goes into a series of convulsions, with his beard quivering menacingly.  Rudess begins to scream at Barberi, advancing towards the man.  As he gets closer and closer, Barberi first looses the ability to stand then the ability to hold his bladder.

Winner - Dream Theater

I love both, but prefer PT. They have a bit more variety, and seem to get better with each release. DT have kind of stagnated after SFAM. Not bad, just stuck in a rut of releasing similar songs. I do love DT as well, though.

I've seen the Tree live, and they were mindblowing. Haven't seen Theater live yet.

No vote, after I fell in love with Pink Floyd I searched for other bands like them. I found these two bands, took a little time, but they grew on me.

Up the Downstairs, In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet vs. Images and Words, Metropolis pt. 2, Change of Seasons, Octavarium, Train of Thought, Score

... too difficult

Well, the only great album of PT is Signify... the rest is boring and quite the same actually. And Steven Wilson send me to sleep just every single time. He is not a singer...

DT, well, they made I&W, Awake and Scenes From a Memory. They are totally better in every single way...

Porcupine Tree, a band I've been listening to a lot lately.

Dream Theater has one album that I love, Falling Into Infinity. Then I find two of their albums excellent but need to be in the right mood for them, Awake and Images & Words.

but in my life , i've never heard a band just close to PT ,  and in my Humble Opinion , Pt can Beat the Hell Out of Any Other Band Listed on PA,s Data !  At Least For Me , as a Musician , and as a Collector !
