Hmm great news!
A bit dissapointed with the album artwork. Looks like a generic Prog metal album cover.

Judging by the track titles and number this could either be a return to form or comedic gold.
Regardless, DT=sew rite.

There almost certainly will be another AA track id bet, though thats just my guess not from anything ive read. Theres no way im going to get my hopes up and consider the possibility of a return to form, they just want so have fun and make money at this point.

Quite right. And that's some interesting cover art. It's like Awake mixed with one of those genric prog metal bands on Magna Carta or Inside Out. Well, I have faith enough in them to release at least two great tracks on the album, but I'm hoping for more.

Everything is unusual from DT. The artwork, the title, and the number of songs (the latter reminds me of the Sum of No Evil). That's why I'm almost sure it'll be great.

looks interesting. ill probably get it once it comes out, as i have since 6DOIT.
im not expecting a return to form, which would be 'what' anyway? all their albums have their own identity and i dont think they have a 'form'. every albums has riffs and melodies that make you go "oh yea that's Dream Theater" but they always mix it up
what id like to hear is them not wearing their influences on their sleeves. we'll see.
***EDIT*** oh and whats the deal with the whole 'gothic' sound they're going for? i wonder how theyll incorporate this with their music, considering ive heard a few riffs from this upcoming album, and for the most part, sound like classic DT riffs, kinda.......

Not sure why people are upset about the artwork. I think it's the best art they've had since 'Awake'.
And King By-Tor, sorry to burst your bubble, but all twelve AA steps haven't been written in song form yet, so MP's work is not done, unfortunately . . .
For the most part, though . . . I'm hopeful. The first time in a long time I have actually anticipated a DT release.

So far I prefer their early era(90's). And as far as I'm concerned, DT with Rudess is getting heavier and heavier....
I like the cover, surely the best from the Rudess era, and yes it reminds me off the ones of their 90's...
I'll wait for some reviews here, and see...

I will buy this the day it comes out, just like I did with Systematic Chaos. And I'm sure that once again, I will not be disappointed in the least.
There WILL be one more AA track, and my money's on The Shattered Fortress. Those tracks have always been good so far though.
The art looks good too, but I've thought that the art so far has all been great, with the exception of When Dream And Day Unite.
Now I've got TWO prog-metal albums to freak out over while waiting for!

I have not heard an album from Dream Theater that I would consider to be outright bad. When Dream And Day Unite, Falling Into Infinity, and Train Of Thought are the worst Dream Theater releases to me, but I would still say all three are worthy of three stars.

IMO, the only average DT album is Falling into Infinity. All others are great. A lot of people talk about how much When Dream And Day Unite sucks, but i actually thinks it is a great album, better than some of the band's recent releases, like Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos.

Recent albums? Octavarium is five stars, Systematic Chaos is their worst so far, 2 stars. I simply feel it's gonna be good. However, I will might not have money to buy it as soon as possible, because the concert tickets were a bit expensive

You have got to be kidding me. Systematic Chaos isn't nearly as good as Awake, I&W, Scenes or Six Degrees. Good, but far, VERY FAR from perfect. IMO, DT needs to stop touring and stop recording for a wile before hitting the studio once again. I mean, they should do like they did in the past: get in studio with ideas, with some kind of material instead of starting from scratch. More material means more options, more possibilities. That is why Images and Words and Scenes from a Memory are so amazing: they had a f***kload of material to work on.

No, I'm not kidding you. I rank Systematic Chaos 2nd behind Awake. Excellent songwriting, very tasteful, yet bursting with proficiency, and a dark, heavy mood that is simultaneously very progressive. (Which, incidentally, is about how I'd describe Awake as well.)

My Gosh. Every time DT comes out with a new album all you hear on these forums is whining and b%tching about whether or not it will sound like IAW or Awake. Those albums came out 15 YEARS AGO!! THEY ARE NOT GOING TO SOUND LIKE THAT AGAIN - GET OVER IT. If you are going to complain about DT you are obviously not a fan. So why are you posting up here. Bands like DT, Symphony X and others are keeping prog metal alive and well for the rest of us who love it If you don't like go to the classic rock forums and discuss the finer qualities of Autograph or something. Otherwise just zip it and play Pull Me Under for the 10,000th time.

It does. Drummer Mike Portnoy was an alcoholic, and he turned to AA for help. There is a series of songs on the band's later albums which reflect his experiences with the 12-step program. Unfortunately, this is all I know.

Well, thats about it. If you want to know the songs are The Mirror, The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil and Repentance. They're supposed to reflect the 12 steps, though there wont be 12 songs as most cover several steps.

I would also strongly disagree that dream theater and symphony x are "keeping prog metal alive" because there are plenty of good prog metal bands and people can be fans of the genre without being in love with dream theater. I would consider myself a dream theater fan, but I have been disappointed with their recent albums and not just because I expect them to sound exactly like I&W or Awake.
Also, pull me under is the worst song on the album, substitute learning to live and I will happily go play it for the 10,000th time.

I was confused too, but someone mentioned the "12 steps" earlier, so I'm assuming this is something to do with Alcoholics Anonymous? |
|
|
The Mirror IS NOT part of the suit, it is just a song. Pornoy drank untill the Scenes from a Memory tour and quit during the time between the end of the tour and the release of the Six Degrees album.
However, The Mirror does talk about his alcohol problem, so it may be a prologue, or something, but it is not the suite itself. There are references to The Mirror in the song This Dying Soul and in the song Repetance, but that is as far as i remember.

Yes, I'm hyped, even though I have a little fear burning inside me... The cover's cool, but what the heck is with the massive amounts of annoying "references" and other stuff. I just don't like it. I prefer more simple covers, or at least, covers which are at least somehow... a whole, you know, not just a background and random stuff, which I think some DT-album-covers are, like this and Awake. Even though I like this one's color palette a lotta more than Awake's (it doesn't use such big distances between colors), I could have liked it more with only the planetary wall and the door to the light and it would've been an 11/10 cover.
Then I hope that now that they have 6 songs, the songs are not filled with jam sessions in every hole (well, that's a little carricated but you can't deny that Petrucci and Rudess are a little bit subject to longer solos, right?), more like atmospherical stuff or very planned out song structures, so that you can see when youre at point 5:32 instead of 10:56... DT's done some really good stuff but it's got it's flaws, too. Hope that this album has a more mainstreamish (sorry) song which is awesome (*coughTaketheTimecough*) but also some good epics, too., which it'll probably have. I think that this'll be a day one purchase still. Oh, and please a little bit lighter sound than what you did in ToT and SC, you're no Metallica, really.
And even though my text sounded pretty negative (?), don't get me wrong - I love DT but I must not become a numb fanboy, because they've got their flaws too.
Geez, why the heck can't I do clear messages. Dammit.

Their live shows are always really good, because you'll never hear them make a mistake (and I know how much you're a stickler for Petrucci's playing, how AMAZING and TECHNICAL and VIRTUOSTIC, and most importantly, TASTEFUL, it is).
|
Well actually, one several of their live DVDs, I could reel off a list of the fluff ups they make. Doesn't really concern me that much, but it is a bit absurd to say the band is totally flawless live, because you can sometimes hear mistakes in the unison/harmonized sections between Petrucci and Rudess in the DVDs.

Wow, that is an intelligent and profound statement I've been listening to Dream Theater since 2005, I own all their studio albums, and some of their live albums, I listen to them once a week and I paid a fair bit of money to see the band live last year. Octavarium sucks balls. Dance Of Eternity is a crap song. I only liked about half of the songs from Systematic Chaos. Does this mean I'm not a fan because I think an entire album basically sucks, that a song from the album that the Dream Theater fanboys call the best album they've made yet stinks, that their last album which some people called a return to form is not that great?

clearly NOT a Dream Theater fan
In my case, i only dislike Falling Into Infinity and some parts of TOT and SC. I LOVE Octavarium, really. Their best album after Six Degrees.

I understand that not every song that DT does is a masterpiece. What I was trying to convey is they every time DT comes out with an album it is incessantly compared to IAW and Awake and that gets old after a while. Each alubum has its ups and dopwns but I will take DT's downs more than most other bands ups if you know what I mean. Also, I was not trying to say DT and Symphony X were the only 2 bands carrying the torch. Those are just two of the more popular ones and I didn't want to go on listing every awesome progmetal band out today. This is why these forums get so irritating. If you have an opinion and you don't express precisely your labeled an idiot.

The first thing I thought just looking at the cover of BC&SL was: "man, this cover is actually empty...but filled with the DT symbol!". Actully, the DT symbol fills almost the entire scene. This might lead to some nice interpretations...

There's only 6 songs, that's why I'm excited. I loved ITPOE, Repentance & Ministry of Lost Souls on SC..as far as d.e.n, the music was good. Their longer songs are always better. ALWAYS.

I would say often, and they have made some long songs that werent very good too so long does not necessarily mean good. It is true though that most of my favorite DT songs are the long ones (learning to live, a change of seasons, etc) but there are also exceptions like hells kitchen

SUCK IT! THE ALBUM F***ING RULES
Sunday 12th April Picture the scene. It’s around 7.30pm on Saturday. The front door bursts open and in trudge Dave Ling and eldest son, Eddie. The former is somewhat the worse for a long, steady day’s drinking, and both are furious at having seen Cardiff – a team of dirty, diving, injury-feigning thugs with a set of fans that define the term ‘inbred cretin’ – overcome Crystal Palace, largely due to the gross incompetence of an inept dickhead of a referee that declined two penalty appeals (one of which was absolutely clear-cut; both for the home side, naturally). So the soothing effect was palpable as, after Mrs L had nodded to the corner of the room and announced: “Your post is over there”, I opened a mailer that contained… ulp… a watermarked promo of Dream Theater’s newie, ‘Black Clouds And Silver Linings’. Drummer and mouthpiece Mike Portnoy had already whetted the appetite of the band’s fans with his quote of: “Imagine if ‘A Change Of Seasons’, ‘Octavarium’, ‘Learning To Live’, ‘Pull Me Under’ and ‘The Glass Prison’ were all [contained] on one Dream Theater album”, but a simple glance at the song timings – 16 mins and 10 seconds, 8.35, 5.25, 12.49, 13.07 and 19.16 – almost had me drooling. 75 minutes later and the oafish ineptitude of R Booth (Nottinghamshire) is a long-distant irrelevance. ‘A Rite Of Passage’ and the soaring ‘Wither’ are destined to thrill those that prefer DT in more succinct form, but… the rest of the album… Christ! Apart from pointing out that the band has cut back on the growled vocals of the last album and **really** played to its long-established strengths, it’s hard to know where to begin. So instead I’ll leave it till the official unveiling date of June 22 for you to add your own personal choice of superlative.

Nice cover. You guys think they'll finally release a decent album this time?
No really, just kidding around here.
I'm one of those odd people who actually prefer their more recent releases to the 90's stuff. In fact, it was the 6 degrees suite that got me listening to them and buying the albums (though I still have never heard TOT). They seem like a pretty consistent band to my ears, and I like most of what they do. Though admittedly I'm mostly a symph prog freak who loved metal for a few years in high school (and Metallica and Slayer later on).
Anyway, I'll be picking it up, though probably not on release day. The track times look promising (as if that were some way to determine quality )

I thought the longer tracks on S.C. were terrible. The last song (don't even care to remember the name) puts me to sleep.
