Nik Turner and Friends will perform "Space Ritual 2009" as the "Hawklords" at the Roundhouse in London on Sunday 8th March, inspired by the ideas of Robert Calvert and Barney Bubbles, and by the Implosion events staged at the same venue in the 70s.

The Roundhouse was one of the best gigs in London while I was there in the early seventies, Hawkwind as they were then of course played quite often at that other Roundhouse in Dagenham which occupied Saturday nights in my life for many years, Sundays well Chalk Farm Roundhouse could not be beaten. This routine was only interupted by the odd gig at the Kursaal Southend, or Fairfield halls Croydon, The Marquee or even Dingwalls ! what carefree days indeed, good music, great sounds, ambience by the cartload, if I could do it all again I would only change the times I turned up late and could not get in! Sadly New Zealand while a great country to live in does not have quite the same scene or richness in the History of Prog.

The Hawklords Roundhouse show has been moved to Sunday 7th June. Tickets bought for 8th March will be valid for the rescheduled date. (See hawklords.com for more.) This is due to Turner injuring his back while cutting firelogs, so hopefully the injury won't have any long-term effects. Backs can be a damn problem at times. Believe me, I know!

This year being the 40th anniversary of Hawkwind, there's much more activity than normal, so I thought this clarification might be useful for some people...

Hawkwind have been performing every year for 40 years now. And for over 20 years Turner's Hawkwind-related activities have had a variety of names, including xHawkwind, spaceritual.net, Nik Turner's Hawkwind, and spaceritual. Even Inner City Unit have done Hawkwind-based shows - one with Calvert on vocals!

The latest Turner project is Hawklords. I think that over 50 people have been in Hawkwind down through the years, and the Hawklords project has eight of them - or nine, including Turner! The name 'Hawklords' is a resurrection of the name under which Hawkwind briefly operated in 1978.

What's in a name, people may ask. Well, sometimes, quite a lot!

I was lucky enough to Nik Turner and the gang at the 100 Club in London two weeks before.  A great time was had by all to be sure.

Oh great. I thought I'd missed this through forgetfulness. But if the date's been changed to June then I'll get to see it after all.

Some of the supporting acts were unable to make the amended date, so the whole thing has been cancelled (for now).
Space Ritual - Nik Turner, Terry Ollis, Thomas Crimble, Mick Slattery and Chris Mekon - will appear at the following three festivals:
08/08/09  Memories Of Woodstock - Shrewsbury
30/08/09  Jackdaw's Birthday - Hadleigh, Suffolk
05/09/09  Weyfest - Tilford

What a way to spend the summer Wink

Been looking at the website for that one.  Headline band on Saturday is a bunch of French crazies called Barbarins Fourchus (?Forked Barbarians?) who live in a theatre and play around with various props on stage.  They look a bit like Bellowhead (that kinda cool but dishevelled look) but sound more like.... well, how can I put it?
Anyroadup: I, for one, am really looking forward to August bank holiday weekend.  Check out http://www.jackdawsbirthday.co.uk - http://www.jackdawsbirthday.co.uk for the complete line-up.
