Hi Folks,
This is a very simple question, from a techie-phobe...
 Super-Audio Compact Disks... will they play on ALL CD players, only newish CD players, or only CD players which specifically state that they are SACD compatible??
I have a Technics Midi System, which is 10 years old... would I be able to introduce it to an album on SACD?

| SACDs will only play on SACD players, but I believe SACD players can play "regular" CDs (backwards compatibility). |

No. SACD is an entirely different format - if your player doesn't specifically support it then you're out of luck. ^^thanks Guys...that's what I thought might be the case, but it was worth asking the question...
so, if I was to go out and buy a brand new, 'high-end' make (eg Technics, Denon) Midi System tomorrow, would it automatically support the SACD format, or would I still have to look for a more specialist player?

^ By default audio systems, even hi-end systems, do not support SACD format. By the way, Technics does not make hi-end equipment. Some DVD-players, for example, some Pioneer models (and they are not too expensive), support SACD and DVD-Audio. Usually such players have corresponding logos on the front panel. Anyway ask sellers and read specifications before buying.

Probably only Sony make CD players that support SACD now, but I have a Pioneer DVD player that supports SACD and DVD-A that I picked up for about £120 18 months ago. I cant imagine any midi system supporting SACD any more. Sony's cheapest SACD/CD player costs £122. on http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_ce?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=+SCD-XE597++&x=0&y=0 - Amazon Pair that with a similar priced amp and speakers and you'll have something far better than a MIDI for what you'd pay for a Technics or Denon system. |

I have a PIoneer DVD player that supports both DVD-A and SACD but it's a pain to set up for SACD. It cost about £120 and I use it for my DVD-As with my surround amp. |

| Well Sony has 3 players on its Sony UK site and the recent Genesis Remasters boxed sets were both in SACD so I guess it must have some kind of niche market. |

I think that any optical disc format is on its way out, but it will take another 10 years or so. By then we will probably get both video and audio content as download only, which fortunately has nothing to do with quality. Currently Blu-Ray discs are on their way up, but I've read many statements that this will be the last optical disc format. I recently upgraded my computer with a blu-ray drive ... now I can play anything except SACD. I'm quite happy with that ... I know few SACD albums that I would want to buy. The Genesis boxes are quite ok, but I'd rather get the vinyl editions ... and like I said above, most of my favorite artists releases their 5.1 mixes on DVD-Audio or DVD-Video.
