Classic Rock are issuing a new prog magazine "Classic Rock presents Prog", issue one out on March 25th.

Not much detail and I can't see anything on their web site, but I assume that "issue one" means this is going to be a regular monthly mag.

I am sure I'll get something in the mail, since for years I have been a regular subscriber to Future Publishing mags (not just CR, but others more concerned with womanly artsWink). CR can be easily found here in the US, so we'll check it out, and see whether it is worth taking up a subscription.

exactly, Micky...Stern Smile

afaic, I stopped getting Classic Rock years ago, when it disappeared up its own rectum amidst article after article on how Aerosmith spent most of the 70's in a drug induced haze/ Poison trashed hotel rooms/ Motley Crue trashed  women/ Guns n Roses trashed each other and so on, and so on...

tabloid, derivative and nauseating...Ouch

I jolly well hope this mag demonstrates an altogether higher standard of music journalism...Wink

I think it's going to be quarterly, (or every 2 months maybe) at least to begin with to see what the popularity is, I know a lot of work is going into this to keep it very up to date with the "now" prog scene as well as looking back over the years.

It's looking good, not long to go until Issue one hits the streets! Wink

I guess the Classic Rock Society in the UK (who publish their own prog related magazine) aren't going to be too thrilled at this news (circulation war anyone?). That said, two prog publications are always better than one. Smile

It's nice to see the genre generating a wider interest again.

There's a whole page ad in Classci Rock magazine out today, but little further detail other than a list of the usual suspect bands. A free CD with issue 1 though.

Hmm. Seems like good news, because, for all of its faults (made very clear and well on previous posts), it is still the only music mag in the UK which takes prog seriously and gives it decent coverage.

I will definitely get this, and, if it lives up to expectations, give up the regular mag and force myself to go without Axl, drug mayhem, and all that jazzTongue

A "prog related" magazine ? Another example of ProgArchives coining a sub-genre and seeing it seep into mainstream consciousness Tongue

I can't wait to see it. I hope is real prog, not some commercially influenced line they call prog. It has happened before, and I hope classic rock magazine does not make the same mistake.

I always buy Classic rock amg every month.

It is so good in many ways.... but others....... how many times can you right the same article about Hendrix? or Zeppelin? etc etc....

Lets hope the Prog version does not continue to labour on Yes, Genesis, King Crimson etc etc. i.e. Just the godfathers of the Genre as Classic Rock seems to.

Not saying they shouldn't feature bands from across the years... but the Prog scene is so far more ranging now... there must be plenty of bands from the just the past 10 - 15 years to fill the pages...let alone telling us what Yes got upto on a tour back in the early 70's...lol... who cares...

Its a great move.... but the proof is in the writing and those they choose to feature.

To be fair to them, they do have regular free CDs showcasing new bands and reviews of new material. The reason why I think that this might be better than the regular magazine (which I have brought from the start) is that prog is still (pardon the pun) progressing, whilst Zep, GnR et al can only be written about so many times in varying degrees of interest without repetition.

It's quite a hefty sum for us across the pond, but I've always found the service very good in general (they will always answer email queries, and send you extra copies for free if something is missing). Anyway, before I subscribe, I want to see the first issue, and go from there.

Exactly why we still subscribe - despite its many faults (whole page this month devoted to how Mick Wall got wasted with Dave Lee Roth on women, Jack Daniels & cocaine) they do take prog seriously, have regular articles on the lesser known bands from the classic age & every now & again come up with an issue where I want to read every article (they gave the Pendies new album a big thumbs up too ).

How long a quarterly mag devoted to prog will last is a moot point, but we shall see - and yes, the first issue will contain all the usual suspects... it's the subsequent ones which will prove worthwhile (or otherwise) - still, free CD

Hopefully it will last some time... I know that CR's publisher (Future Publishing) has launched many mags over the years, only to see them bite the dust after a few issues. However, kudos to them for keeping on trying!

Hey all, I'm The Reasoning's manager and we're in the first issue and on the cover cd so I might be slightly biased  Wink but we're all rather chuffed that Future are trying this out, and with the mighty Jerry Ewing at the helm, who knows?!? At last, proper music gets a decent bit of publicity, and there's a voice for contemporary bands as well, so that can only be a good thing!!! BUY IT!! LOLLOL

Happy reading everyone!

I think it may be a bit too early for the mag to get to the US, if today was its official release date in the UK. I was at Barnes and Noble today, but of course I didn't see it. Anyway, both Borders and B&N generally stock Classic Rock and its offshoots, so I would wait a bit before ordering it from the publishers.

I'm with Tony on this, use it or lose it.
We've bemoaned the lack of mainstream interest for decades, it's here, and it's not been easy, it's ultimately good for everyone, I'm sick of all the sn****ring micro articles in mainstream mags, this is one for us, and that can only be good.

It's going to grow if there is sufficient interest, ok, I might have some biase, but it's good for everyone, it really is!  I was pretty impressed!

I got my copy yesterday, and have spent much of today (in between spending time with family) reading it.

I am hugely impressed. Thety seem to have struck a great balance between the bands we know and love and attempting to introduce readers who aren't quite as dedicated as users of this forum to lesser known bands. I think they have achieved this very well.

Great writing, fantastic interviews, honest reviews, and lots of modern prog intermingled with the classics. Long may it live.

I found it at Barnes & Noble about two weeks ago, and am quite happy with my purchase. Yes, the price is a bit steep, but no more so than other quarterly mags published in the USA which I buy on a regular basis. And then, in Italy, believe it or not, British mags costing £ 3.99 were sold for € 10, or even 12ShockedDead!
Dead
Anyway, I was rather impressed by the CD, which features a number of interesting bands (I will try to get Blood Ceremony in Heavy Prog) - though not so much by the reiteration of the statement that Camel were amongst the pillars of the Canterbury genreConfused.

Classic Rock Presents Prog Editor Jerry Ewing tells all about issue number 2 of our magazine about all things prog!

Issue 2 of Classic Rock Presents Prog hits the streets in the UK today. Bearing in mind issue 1 sold out, we’ve increased the print run of the new issue as well as having increased the amount of stock being held at http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/ - www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk , so hopefully some of you won’t experience the difficulty finding the new issue as you did with the launch.

Issue 2 comes with the wallet featuring, as you can see from the image, Muse, The Mars Volta and Radiohead, with Mike Oldfield, Van der Graaf Generator and King Crimson looking on. All are interviewed in the new issue, along with Dream Theater, Dave Stewart, IQ and snooker legend Steve Davis, who lets us have a peek at his record collection. THERE IS A BUZZ IN THE AIR ABOUT HAKEN - SLOWLY BUT STRONGLY THEIR MUSIC IS COMING TO PEOPLE'S ATTENTION - if you enjoyed the beautiful Black Seed you will love their other work on myspace.

Hi. I've been following Haken for two years and they can really deliver live. Supporting Riverside at The Underworld. Opening for KINGS X at The Wulfrun Hall and The Electric Ballroom. Headlining the House of Progression with Anchorhead, Season's End and into the Woods. Awesome guitar and keys talent on stage - Hen and Tom play with To-Mera, who have shared the stage with Emperor, Dream Theater, P.of S. and Adagio. Charlie plays with the mythical Anchorhead and Linear Sphere who have shared the stage with Cynic.

They are recording their debut album in the Summer for a full label release in January 2010 - all completely brand new music - more news in the Autumn.

YOU NEED TO SEE THIS BAND LIVE.

Big show coming up at the House of Progression in KIngston on Saturday July 11th - they aim high this band - they will play all the music live, from their debut album ,for the very first time - a World Premier. Would be great for the band to have a packed house.

They have a show at the Freebutt in Brighton on July 17th, a shorter set with three other bands. I have never failed to come out of a HAKEN gig without a smile on my face....Shaken by Haken.

As well as Black Seed - why not check out some more HAKEN?

http://thinkexist.com/quotation/it-is-not-the-brains-that-matter-most-but-that/362378.html - It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them -- the character, the heart, generous qualities, progressive ideas
F. Dostoyevsky

In the interests of getting an informed view of a Band's work it is a good idea to listen to several tracks and, if possible, catch them live.....always in a spirit of respect for the effort, dedication and love that the musicians put into their craft.

I have already declared my interest in and excitement about HAKEN but, as with all bands and artists, we will want to follow our own ears, heart and judgement to form a personal opinion....without fear or favour, negative competition or anger.

I think Black seed is a beautiful track, but it's choice for the CD was probably dictated by length, rather than it being essentially representative of HAKEN's work.

Check out their other 5 tracks on the myspace player and decide for yourself.

Very impressive publication.

Thought their top 50 was much more in line with my view of reality than the PA one.

But:  "though not so much by the reiteration of the statement that Camel were amongst the pillars of the Canterbury genreConfused."

This is complete crap, as Raff points out. Camel were NEVER a Canterbury band; not at all!!! OK, a few Canterbury musicians joined them at times, but I groan when I hear this on this site or anywhere else.
